Challenges and prospects for consumer acceptance of cultured meat

Consumer acceptance of cultured meat is expected to depend on a wide diversity of determinants ranging from technologyrelated perceptions to product-specific expectations, and including wider contextual factors like media coverage, public involvement, and trust in science, policy and society. This paper discusses the case of cultured meat against this multitude of possible determinants shaping future consumer acceptance or rejection. The paper also presents insights from a primary exploratory study performed in April 2013 with consumers from Flanders（Belgium）（n=180）. The concept of cultured meat was only known（unaided） by 13% of the study participants. After receiving basic information about what cultured meat is, participants expressed favorable expectations about the concept. Only 9% rejected the idea of trying cultured meat, while two thirds hesitated and about quarter indicated to be willing to try it. The provision of additional information about the environmental benefits of cultured meat compared to traditional meat resulted in 43% of the participants indicating to be willing to try this novel food, while another 51% indicated to be ‘maybe＇ willing to do so. Price and sensory expectations emerged as major obstacles. Consumers eating mostly vegetarian meals were less convinced that cultured meat might be healthy, suggesting that vegetarians may not be the ideal primary target group for this novel meat substitute. Although exploratory rather than conclusive, the findings generally underscore doubts among consumers about trying this product when it would become available, and therefore also the challenge for cultured meat to mimic traditional meat in terms of sensory quality at an affordable price in order to become acceptable for future consumers.

Interconnected and high cycling stability polypyrrole supercapacitors using cellulose nanocrystals and commonly used inorganic salts as dopants

Polypyrrole(PPy)is wildly used as electrode material in supercapacitors due to its high conductivity,low cost,ease of handling,and ease of ***,limited capacitance and poor cycling stability hinder its practical *** developing carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals(CNC-COO^(-))as immobile dopants for PPy to improve its cycling stability,we investigated the effect of different commonly used salts(KCl,NaCl,KBr,and NaClO_(4))as dopants during electrode fabrication by *** film’s capacitance increased from 160.6 to 183.4 F g^(-1)after adding a combination of KCl and NaClO_(4) into the electrodeposition *** importantly,the porous and interconnected PPy/CNC-COO^(-)-Cl-(Cl O_(4)^(-))_0.5 electrode film exhibited an excellent capacitance of 125.0 F g^(-1)(0.78 F cm^(-2))at a high current density of 2.0 Ag^(-1)(20 m A cm^(-2),allowing charging in less than 1 min),increasing almost 204%over PPy/CNC-COO-films.A symmetric PPy/CNC-COO^(-)-Cl-(ClO_(4)^(-))_0.5 supercapacitor retained its full capacitance after 5000 cycles,and displayed a high energy density of 5.2 Wh kg^(-1)at a power density of 25.4 W kg^(-1)(34.5μWh cm^(-2) at 1752.3μW cm^(-2)).These results reveal that the porous structure formed by doping with CNC-COO-and inorganic salts opens up more active reaction areas to store charges in PPy-based films as the stiff and ribbon-like CNC-COO-as permanent dopants improve the strength and stability of PPy-based *** demonstration provides a simple and practical way to deposit PPy based supercapacitors with high capacitance,fast charging,and excellent cycling stability.

Isotopic evidence for volatile replenishment of the Moon during the Late Accretion

The traditional view of a dry, volatile-poor Moon has been challenged by the identification of water and other volatiles in lunar samples, but the volatile budget delivery time（s）, source（s） and temporal evolution remain poorly constrained. Here we show that hydrogen and chlorine isotopic ratios in lunar apatite changed significantly during the Late Accretion（LA, 4.1–3.8 billion years ago）. During this period,deuterium/hydrogen ratios in the Moon changed from initial carbonaceous-chondrite-like values to values consistent with an influx of ordinary-chondrite-like material and pre-LA elevated δ37Cl values drop towards lower chondrite-like values. Inferred pre-LA lunar interior water contents are significantly lower than pristine values suggesting degassing, followed by an increase during the LA. These trends are consistent with dynamic models of solar-system evolution, suggesting that the Moon's（and Earth's） initial volatiles were replenished ～0.5 Ga after their formation, with their final budgets reflecting a mixture of sources and delivery times.

The awareness of the problem of the scarcity of water of high quality has strongly changed the approach of wastewater ***,there is an increasing need for the beneficial reuse of treated wastewater and to recover valuable products and energy from the *** microbiological treatment methods are,only to a limited part,able to satisfy these needs,the role and significance of physical/chemical processes in wastewater treatment are gaining more and more *** specific future role and aim of the various physical/chemical treatment processes can be categorized in five groups:improvement of the performance of microbiological treatment processes,achievement of the high quality required for reuse of the effluent,recovery of valuable components and energy from the wastewater for beneficial reuse,desalination of brackish water and seawater,and treatment of concentrated liquid or solid waste residues produced in a wastewater treatment *** of more environmentally sustainable wastewater treatment chains in which physical/chemical processes play a crucial role,also requires application of process control and modeling *** is briefly introduced by the elaboration of treatment scenarios for three specific wastewaters.

Extent of surgery in cancer of the colon:Is more better?

Since the introduction of total mesorectal excision as the standard approach in mid and low rectal cancer,the incidence of local recurrence has sharply *** attention to surgical technique in colon cancer(CC) has resulted in the concept of complete mesocolic excision(CME),which consists of complete removal of the intact mesentery and high ligation of the vascular supply at its *** renewed attention to meticulous surgical technique certainly has its merits,routine implementation of CME is currently ***,in contrast to rectal cancer,local recurrence originating from an incompletely removed mesenteryis rare in CC and usually a manifestation of systemic ***,although CME may increase nodal counts and therefore staging accuracy,this is unlikely to affect survival since the observed relationship between nodal counts and outcome in CC is most probably not causal but confounded by a range of clinical ***,several lines of evidence suggest that metastasis to locoregional nodes occurs early and is a stochastic rather than a stepwise phenomenon in CC,in essence reflecting the tumor-host-metastasis ***,therefore,comparative studies in CC as well as in other digestive cancers have failed to demonstrate any survival benefit associated with extensive,additional or extra-mesenteric ***,routine implementation of CME may cause patient harm by longer operating times,major vascular damage and autonomic nerve ***,data from randomized trials reporting relevant endpoints are required before CME can be recommended as a standard approach in CC surgery.

Design of a single all-silicon ring resonator with a 150 nm free spectral range and a 100 nm tuning range around 1550 nm

We present a novel and simple method to obtain an ultrawide free spectral range(FSR) silicon ring resonator together with a tuning range covering the entire spectrum from 1500 to 1600 nm. A ring resonator with a large FSR together with a high Q factor, high tuning efficiency, and low fabrication cost and complexity is desired for many applications. In this paper, we introduce a novel way to make such a ring resonator, which takes advantage of the well-known resonance-splitting phenomenon. It is a single ring resonator with an FSR of more than 150 nm around 1550 nm and which has an easy thermo-optic tunability that can produce a tuning range around 90 nm or even more. Moreover, the device is simple to implement and can be fabricated in standard complementary metal-oxide semiconductor technology without requiring any kind of complicated processing or extra *** potential applications include single mode laser cavities, wavelength division multiplexing filters,(de)multiplexers, optical sensors, and integrated reflectors.
