A simple dielectric barrier discharge（DBD） jet array was designed with a liquid electrode and helium *** characteristics of the jet array discharge and the preliminary polymerization with acrylic acid（AA） monomer were *** plasma reactor can produce a cold jet array with a gas temperature lower than 315 K,using an applied discharge power between 6 W and 30 W（V dis × I dis）.A silk fibroin film（SFF） was modified using the jet array and AA monomer,and the treated SFF samples were characterized by atomic force microscopy（AFM）,scanning electron microscopy（SEM）,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（FTIR）,and contact angle（CA）.The deposition rate of the poly acrylic acid（PAA） was able to reach 300 nm/min,and the surface roughness and energy increased with the AA flow *** FTIR results indicate that the modified SFF had more carboxyl groups（-COOH） than the original *** latter characteristic allowed the modified SFF to immobilize more quantities of antimicrobial peptide（AP,LL-37） which inhibited the Escherichia coli（***） effectively.

Understanding a species’functional traits allows for a directed and productive perspective on the role a species plays in nature,and thus its relative importance to conservation *** functionaltrait ecology of the plateau pika Ochotona curzoniae is examined to better understand the resilience and sustainability of the high alpine grasslands of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau(QTP).The key functional traits of plateau pikas are their abundance and behavior of digging extensive burrow *** pikas have been poisoned over a significant part of their original geographic distribution across the QTP,allowing comparison of ecological communities with and without *** all mammalian and avian carnivores,most of which are obligate predators on pikas,have been lost in regions where pikas have been *** endemic birds on the QTP nest in pika burrows;when pikas are poisoned,burrows collapse,and these birds are greatly reduced in *** to the biopedturbation resulting from their burrows,regional plant species richness is higher in areas with pikas than *** presence of pika burrows allows higher rates of infiltration during heavy monsoon rains compared to poisoned areas,possibly mitigating runoff and the potential for serious downslope erosion and ***,the functional traits of plateau pikas enhance native biodiversity and other important ecosystem functions;these traits are *** plateau pikas are not natural colonizers,active reintroduction programs are needed to restore pikas to areas from which they have been poisoned to restore the important functional ecological traits of pikas.

Purpose:To determine the effect of unanticipated mid-flight medial-lateral external perturbation of the upper or lower trunk on anterior cruciate ligament(ACL)loading variable s during ***:Thirty-two participants performed double-leg vertical jump-landings while bilateral kinematics and kinetics were collected under 6conditions(upper or lower trunk perturbation locations;no,left,or right perturbation directions).Two customized catapult apparatuses were created to apply pushing perturbation to participants near the maximal jump ***:The ball contacted participants near the center of mass for the lower-trunk conditions and approximately 23 cm above the center of mass for the upper-trunk *** upper-trunk perturbation,the contralateral leg demonstrated significantly smaller knee flexion angles at initial contact and greater peak knee abduction angles,peak vertical ground reaction forces,peak knee extension moments,and peak knee adduction moments compared to other legs among all *** lower-trunk perturbation,the contralateral leg showed significantly smaller knee flexion angles at initial contact and increased peak vertical ground reaction forces and peak knee extension moments compared to legs in the no-perturbation ***:Mid-flight external trunk pushing perturbation increased ACL loading variables for the leg contralateral to the *** uppertrunk perturbation resulted in greater changes in ACL loading variables compared to the lower-trunk perturbation,likely due to trunk and ipsilateral leg rotation and more laterally located center of mass relative to the contralateral *** findings may help us understand the mechanisms of indirect-contact ACL injuries and develop jump-landing training strategies under mid-flight trunk perturbation to better prevent ACL injury.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid and Dietary Fats Differentially Affect Hepatic ACAT Activity and LDL-Cholesterol in Postweanling Pigs Fed Low-Fat Diets

ABSTRACT：Two separate studies tested the hypoth- esis that plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol LDL-C ） can be decreased by conjugated linoleic acid （CLA） by depressing hepatic acyl-coenzyme A： cholesterol acyltransferase （ACAT） activity. In the first experiment, 3 groups of 6 early-weaned piglets were fed low-fat diets containing either 1.5% CLA, 1.5% corn oil or 1.5% beef tallow;fat provided 8% of the energy intake. In the second experiment, 4 groups of 6 early-weaned piglets were fed high-fat di- ets containing either 15% beef tallow, 12% beef tal- low plus 3% CLA, 15% corn oil, or 12% corn oil plus 3% CLA; fat provided 29% of energy intake. Cholesterol was balanced across diets in both experi-ments. In pigs fed the low-fat diets, all dietary fats in- creased LDL-C and triacylglycerols and decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol （ HDL-C ） and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol （VLDL-C）. LDL-C was the same in pigs fed low-fat tallow or low-fat CLA diets. However, ACAT activity was near- ly 80% higher in pigs fed the low-fat tallow diet than in pigs fed the low-fat CLA diets. All high-fat diets increased LDL-C, HDL-C and triacylglycerols equally with no effect on VLDL-C. There were no unique fat- ty acid effects of the high-fat diets on ACAT activity. We conclude that supplemental fats had differential effects on hepatic ACAT activity and LDL-C, but on- ly in pigs fed low-fat diets.

Vitis aestivalis is used in commercial wine production. Vegetative propagation of V. aestivalis has shown a low success rate. Although plant tissue culture has been a successful method to propagate many species, V. aestivalis has not yet been reliably grown as pure callus culture due to a fungal endophyte that exists within the plant. This study reports a viable protocol for obtaining fungus-free tissue culture callus from V. aestivalis. Explant tissue was chosen from healthy, actively growing plants grown in a growth room and in a vineyard. Tissues were sterilized with a combination of isopropanol, bleach, and chlorine dioxide gas and plated onto media containing chlorothalonil. The results from this study suggest that in order to obtain endophyte-free callus tissue, vine explants are to be taken from plants grown in a growth chamber simulating springtime conditions, sterilized in a combination of alcohol, bleach, and chlorine dioxide, and plated on selection media containing an antifungal agent, such as chlorothalonil. This technique could potentially be used with plants that have associated endophytes or other contamination problems to establish callus tissue for research and/or commercial propagation efforts.

Gastric cancer is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide. Helicobacter pylori is considered one of the most important causes of this condition specially because of its virulence markers as sabA and cagA. Therefore, we aim to investigate the relation between these markers and the gastric diseases in 400 patients who underwent upper digestive endoscopy. To detect the bacteria and its genes by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), the presence of H. pylori was significant when comparing the groups control vs. cancer (p value vs. chronic gastritis (p value cagA was statistically significant considering its presence when comparing the chronic gastritis vs. cancer groups (p value = 0.0434) OR [95% CI] 2.44 (1.021 - 5.845). Associating both sabA and cagA, we found a statistically significant result (p value vs. cancer groups. Helicobacter pylori is directly associated to gastric diseases such as gastritis and cancer and its virulence markers: sabA and cagA increase the injury process to the gastric epithelium making the host more susceptible to cancer.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound guided regional anesthesia is widely taught using task trainer models. Commercially available models are often used; however, they can be cost prohibitive. Therefore, alternative "homemade" models with similar fidelity are often used. We hypothesize that professional task trainers will be preferred over homemade models. The purpose of this study is to determine realism, durability and cleanliness of three different task trainers for ultrasound guided nerve ***: This was a prospective observational study using a convenience sample of medical student participants in an ultrasound guided nerve block training session on January 24 th, 2015. Participants were asked to perform simulated nerve blocks on three different task trainers including, 1 commercial and 2 homemade. A questionnaire was then given to all participants to rate their experiences both with and without the knowledge on the cost of the simulator ***: Data was collected from 25 participants. The Blue Phantom model was found to have the highest fidelity. Initially, 10(40%) of the participants preferred the Blue Phantom model, while 10(40%) preferred the homemade gelatin model and 5(20%) preferred the homemade tofu model. After cost awareness, the majority, 18(72%) preferred the gelatin ***: The Blue Phantom model was thought to have the highest fidelity, but after cost consideration the homemade gelatin model was preferred.

Gastric diseases such as chronic gastritis and gastric cancer are most commonly caused by virulence factors of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), such as the vacA, cagA, dupA and oipA genes. Therefore, this study investigated the prevalence and the combination of these virulence factors from patients with gastric diseases. The endoscopic biopsies were obtained from 516 patients with gastric symptoms, 101 of which were from patients with normal gastric tissue, 365 of which were from patients with chronic gastritis, and 50 of which were from patients with gastric cancer. H. pylori and the virulence factors were detected by PCR. The oipA gene exhibited an increased risk for chronic gastritis (p = 0.0296), and the vacA gene demonstrated a risk for gastric cancer from chronic gastritis (p = 0.0002). Based on the combination of the virulence factors, cagA, vacA, dupA and oipA genes exhibited a high prevalence in patients with chronic gastritis and gastric cancer. The cagA+/dupA+ genotype demonstrated a significant correlation in patients with normal gastric mucosa (p = 0.0278). In the chronic gastritis group, a significant association was observed between the cagA+ and the vacA s1m1 genotypes (p cagA+/dupA+ genotypes (p = 0.0183), the dupA+/oipA+ genotypes (p cagA, vacA, dupA, and oipA genes, which contributed to the risk of developing gastroduodenal diseases. Furthermore, this is the first study to reveal a high prevalence of the oipA gene in H. pylori isolates in Brazil.
