The outstanding properties of graphene have initiated myriads of research and development;yet, its economic impact is hamperedby the difficulties encountered in production and practical application. Recently discovered laser-induced graphene is generated bya simple printing process on flexible and lightweight polyimide films. Exploiting the electrical features and mechanical pliability ofLIG on polyimide, we developed wearable resistive bending sensors that pave the way for many cost-effective measurementsystems. The versatile sensors we describe can be utilized in a wide range of configurations, including measurement of force,deflection, and curvature. The deflection induced by different forces and speeds is effectively sensed through a resistancemeasurement, exploiting the piezoresistance of the printed graphene electrodes. The LIG sensors possess an outstanding range forstrain measurements reaching >10% A double-sided electrode concept was developed by printing the same electrodes on bothsides of the film and employing difference measurements. This provided a large bidirectional bending response combined withtemperature compensation. Versatility in geometry and a simple fabrication process enable the detection of a wide range of flowspeeds, forces, and deflections. The sensor response can be easily tuned by geometrical parameters of the bending sensors and theLIG electrodes. As a wearable device, LIG bending sensors were used for tracking body movements. For underwater operation,PDmS-coated LIG bending sensors were integrated with ultra-low power aquatic tags and utilized in underwater animal speedmonitoring applications, and a recording of the surface current velocity on a coral reef in the Red Sea.

Optimization and control of synchrotron emission in ultraintense laser–solid interactions using machine learning

The optimum parameters for the generation of synchrotron radiation in ultraintense laser pulse interactions with planar foils are investigated with the application of Bayesian optimization,via Gaussian process regression,to 2D particle-incell *** properties of the synchrotron emission,such as the yield,are maximized,and simultaneous mitigation of bremsstrahlung emission is achieved with multi-variate objective *** angle-of-incidence of the laser pulse onto the target is shown to strongly influence the synchrotron yield and angular profile,with oblique incidence producing the optimal *** is further explored in 3D simulations,in which additional control of the spatial profile of synchrotron emission is demonstrated by varying the polarization of the laser *** results demonstrate the utility of applying a machine learning-based optimization approach and provide new insights into the physics of radiation generation in laser-foil interactions,which will inform the design of experiments in the quantum electrodynamics(QED)-plasma regime.

Continuous revision of the histologic and stage-wise classification of lung cancer by the World Health Organization (WHO) provides the foundation for therapeutic advances by promoting molecular targeted and immunotherapies and ensuring accurate diagnosis. Cancer epidemiologic data provide helpful information for cancer prevention, diagnosis, and management, supporting health-care interventions. Global cancer mortality projections from 2016 to 2060 show that cancer will overtake ischemic heart diseases (IHD) as the leading cause of death (18.9 million) immediately after 2030, surpassing non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which accounts for 85 percent of lung cancers. The clinical stage at the diagnosis is the main prognostic factor in NSCLC therapies. Advanced early diagnostic methods are essential as the initial stages of cancer show reduced mortality compared to the advanced stages. Sophisticated approaches to proper histological classification and NSCLC management have improved clinical efficiency. Although immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and targeted molecular therapies have refined the therapeutic management of late-stage NSCLC, the specificity and sensitivity of cancer biomarkers should be improved by focusing on prospective studies, followed by their use as therapeutic tools. The liquid biopsy candidates such as circulating tumor cells (CTCs), circulating cell-free tumor DNA (cfDNA), tumor educated platelets (TEP), and extracellular vesicles (EVs) possess cancer-derived biomolecules and aid in tracing: driver mutations leading to cancer, acquired resistance caused by various generations of therapeutic agents, refractory disease, prognosis, and surveillance.

OBJECTIVE Phosphodiesterase 4(PDE4),specific for cyclic AmP(cAmP)-hydrolyzing,has four isoforms (PDE4A-D) with at least 25 splice ***4 inhibitors produce definite antidepressant-like and cognitive-enhancing effects. However,none of PDE4 inhibitors has yet been approved for clinical utility so far due to the concomitant side effects which appear to be PDE4 isoform *** present research is to explore the major isoforms of PDE4 responsible for antidepressant-like and cognitive-enhancing effects of PDE4 inhibitors but not side *** Long-form PDE4Ds were silenced by the bilateral microinfusion of lentiviral vector containing miRNAs(4DmiR) into the prefrontal cortex(PFC).The expression of the miRNAs,which were indicated by EGFP,was identified using fluorescence ***-like behaviors were measured by tail-suspension test (TST),forced swimming test(FST) and chronic unpredictable stress *** and memory behaviors were measured by novel object recognition test(NOR) and morris water maze test(mWm) in both normal mice and the mice with chronic unpredictable stress-induced memory *** emetic potential was evaluated by the assessment of the anaesthetic reversal effect,a surrogate of the emesis test in non-vomiting *** expressions of PDE4 isoforms/splice variants and cAmP signaling related proteins in PFC were examined by Western-blot ***(1) High and specific expression of EGFP(green) in PFC was observed under fluo-rescence microscopy.(2) 4DmiR significantly down-regulated PDE4D4/5 splice variants,but not PDE4A,PDE4B or PDE4D1/2/3. Effect of oxygen and nitrogen functionalization on the physical and electronic structure of graphene

Covalent functionalization of graphene offers opportunities for tailoring its properties and is an unavoidable consequence of some graphene synthesis techniques. However, the changes induced by the functionalization are not well understood. By using atomic sources to control the extent of the oxygen and nitrogen functionalization, we studied the evolution in the structure and properties at the atomic scale. Atomic oxygen reversibly introduces epoxide groups whilst, under similar conditions, atomic nitrogen irreversibly creates diverse functionalities including substitutional, pyridinic, and pyrrolic nitrogen. Atomic oxygen leaves the Fermi energy at the Dirac point （i.e., undoped）, whilst atomic nitrogen results in a net n-doping; however, the experimental results are consistent with the dominant electronic effect for both being a transition from delocalized to localized states, and hence the loss of the signature electronic structure of graphene.

Effects of Aggregate Extraction on Water Storage in the Pepin Creek Watershed, British Columbia, Canada

Aggregate extraction in the Lower Fraser Valley of British Columbia, Canada, has affected the soil water storage of the Pepin Creek watershed. Although local government has set regulations for aggregate extraction projects to avoid negative environmental impacts, the gradual loss of soil materials and associated changes in vegetative cover has led to an alteration of the water balance within the watershed, which may affect surface or groundwater levels, and aquatic habitats. The study assessed the effects of aggregate extraction on the water storage of the Pepin Creek watershed and estimated that 25% of the surface area of the Canadian portion of the watershed has been affected by aggregate mining with an estimated loss of water storage of 10%. Evapotranspiration has decreased as a result of the removal of the vegetative cover. Precipitation has remained relatively constant over the study period but the annual discharge measured at Pepin Creek has decreased. Recommendations for enhancing environmental monitoring to better measure and understand ecological functions of the watershed during aggregate extraction are provided.
