We present an atypical case of disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Sihuas district, located in the Andean valleys of Ancash-Peru. A 62-year-old man with no particular medical history presented multiple lesions located on the inferior abdomen, lumbar region and the right anterior thigh. Histological analysis found leishmanial amastigotes in the lesion sample, the Montenegro reaction was positive for Leishmania spp, and the polymerase chain reaction was positive for Leishmania peruviana. In conclusion, the atypical presentation of this disease may be related to the presence of an uncommon parasite strain or host immune deficiencies. The molecular identification of the etiology for disseminated leishmaniasis, will allow a better understanding of the presentation and proper treatment,as well as associated risk factors.

An 11 year old, hispanic girl with a history of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia was admitted to the hospital for symptoms compatible with Bartonella henselae infection. The first molecularly diagnosed case of disseminated Bartonella henselae infection was reported in an immunocompromised patient in Lima, Peru. The analysis was confirmed by Polymerase Chain Reaction and automated sequencing of a liver biopsy sample, even though the serologic tests were negative. In conclusion, Bartonella spp. infection should have a particular diagnostic consideration in immunocompromised patients with fever of unknown origin and further investigation regarding the patient's past exposures with cats should also be elicited.

The presence of El Ni?o Southern Oscillation(ENSO)implies the presence of fluctuating rains in coastal areas and these changes influence the occurrence of febrile syndromes outbreaks.In Peru,Aedes aegypti is the vector responsible for various viruses such as the dengue,Zika,chikungunya,which is distributed in 18 Peruvian departments.These viruses cause similar clinical characteristics in the host and for this reason rapid,sensitive and specific diagnostic tests are needed so that the patient can receive timely treatment.

Objective:To describe and molecularly characterize an outbreak of dengue virus(DENV)infection in Cajamarca,an Andean region in Peru.Methods:A total of 359 serum samples from patients with acute febrile illness were assessed for the presence of DENV via RT-PCR,ELISA NS1,Ig M and Ig G in Cajamarca,Peru from January 2017 to June 2017.The evaluation of the different diagnostic tests and their applicability was performed.Results:Dengue virus was detected in 24.7%of samples by RTPCR.Meanwhile,serological analysis detected 30.3%positive cases via ELISA NS1 antigen,16.7%via ELISA Ig G and 9.7%via ELISA Ig M.Most of the cases corresponded to DENV-3(77.5%).The use of RT-PCR performed better in primary infections(P<0.01),while detection of ELISA Ig M performed better in secondary infections(P<0.01).The combination of NS1 and Ig M performed better than the other assays in detecting primary(92.5%)and secondary infections(96.6%).The most frequent symptoms associated with fever were headaches,myalgias,and arthralgias across all groups.Conclusions:We report an important outbreak of dengue infection caused by DENV-3 in Cajamarca,Peru.Our findings encourage the use of NS1 antigen and Ig M co-detection.These findings demonstrate an increasing expansion of DENV-3 in Peru and highlight the importance of molecular diagnosis and serotype characterization among the clinically defined dengue cases to strengthen the Peruvian epidemiological surveillance.

Thermal energy management in metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)is an important,yet often neglected,challenge for many adsorption-based applications such as gas storage and separations.Despite its importance,there is insufficient understanding of the structure-property relationships governing thermal transport in MOFs.To provide a data-driven perspective into these relationships,here we perform large-scale computational screening of thermal conductivity k in MOFs,leveraging classical molecular dynamics simulations and 10,194 hypothetical MOFs created using the ToBaCCo 3.0 code.We found that high thermal conductivity in MOFs is favored by high densities(>1.0 g cm^(−3)),small pores(10 W m^(−1) K^(−1)),the structures of which we describe in additional detail.

Objective:To evaluate the antileishmanial activity of different extracts from three Cuban Pluchea species.Methods:In in vitro assays the IC50was calculated in the promastigotes and amastigotes forms as cytotoxicity in murine macrophages.In leishmaniasis cutanea experiment,mortality, weight loss,lesion size and burden parasite were measured.Results:Extracts evaluated showed inhibitive effect on growing of promastigote form;however,active extracts caused a high toxicity. Ethanol and n-hexane extracts demonstrated specific antileishmanial activity.Ethanol and n-hexane extracts from Pluchea carolinensis（P.carolinensis） caused similar inhibition against amastigote form.The intraperitoneal administration of the ethanol extract of P.carolinensis at 100 mg/kg prevented lesion development compared with control groups.Conclusions:The antileishmanial experiment suggests that ethanol extracts from P.carolinensis is the most promising.Further studies are still needed to evaluate the polential of this plant as a source of new antileishmanial agents.

Dynamic System Identification of Underwater Vehicles Using Multi-output Gaussian Processes

Non-parametric system identification with Gaussian processes for underwater vehicles is explored in this research with the purpose of modelling autonomous underwater vehicle(AUV) dynamics with a low amount of data. Multi-output Gaussian processes and their aptitude for modelling the dynamic system of an underactuated AUV without losing the relationships between tied outputs are used. The simulation of a first-principle model of a Remus 100 AUV is employed to capture data for the training and validation of the multi-output Gaussian processes. The metric and required procedure to carry out multi-output Gaussian processes for AUV with 6 degrees of freedom(DoF) is also shown in this paper. Multi-output Gaussian processes compared with the popular technique of recurrent neural network show that multi-output Gaussian processes manage to surpass RNN for non-parametric dynamic system identification in underwater vehicles with highly coupled DoF with the added benefit of providing the measurement of confidence.

Evaluating the Technical and Economic Feasibility of Adding a Power Recovery System to the Steam Condenser of a Lignite Coal-Fired Power Plant

Steam is the typical working fluid to drive turbo-generators in coal-fired power plants. It is an effective working fluid, but some of its energy is extracted in an unusable form when condensed. A Power Recovery Cycle (PRC) using a more volatile Secondary Working Fluid (SWF) added to the steam cycle could improve energy efficiency. PRCs have been applied to the flue gas and for combined cycle systems but not to traditional plant steam cycles. This paper details an analysis of adding a steam cycle PRC to a 500 MW lignite coal-fired power plant. A validated model of the plant was developed and PRCs using the three most attractive SWFs, benzene, methanol and hydrazine, were then added to the model. Adding a benzene, methanol, or hydrazine steam cycle PRC will produce an additional 59, 34, and 49 MW, respectively. An AACE Class 4 factored broad capital cost estimate and comparable operating costs and revenue estimates were developed to evaluate PRC feasibility. The benzene, methanol, and hydrazine processes had 2019 Net Present Values (NPVs) @12% of -$32, -$59, and +$35 million ± 40%, respectively. Thus, a PRC may be profitable at current or modest increases to U.S. Upper Midwest electricity prices of around $0.0667/kWh.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of tannin-rich peanut skin(PS)supplementation on growth performance,ruminal and blood metabolites,and carcass traits associated with internal parasite infection in meat goats under confined conditions.Twenty-one Kiko crossbred male goats were blocked by body weight(BW)and randomly assigned to one of 3 treatment groups.Experimental diets contained different levels of peanut(Arachis hypogaea)skin replacing alfalfa(Medicago sativa)pellets(ALP)in a control diet.Experimental treatments included:30% ALP(control),15% PS and 15% ALP,and 30% PS.Peanut skin was incorporated in the grain mix portion of the diets.Animals were fed once daily,and the intake was adjusted every 3 to 4 d.Each animal was each artificially infected with 5,000 larvae of the 3 rd stage of barber’s pole worm(Haemonchus contortus).Body weights,dry matter intake(DMI),and fecal samples for fecal egg counts(FEC)were taken at d 0,12,23,and 41.Rumen fluid and blood samples were collected at d 45.The performance period lasted 45 d and at the completion of the study,goats were harvested,and carcass characteristics,abomasal worm counts were measured.The results showed that DMI,BW,carcass traits,and meat color were not affected by PS supplementation,whereas average daily gain(ADG,P<0.01),blood glucose(P<0.001),phosphorus(P<0.05),and cholesterol levels(P<0.001)significantly increased with increasing levels of PS supplementation.There was a linear(P<0.01)reduction in rumen acetate to propionate ratio,ammonia-nitrogen,FEC,and H.contortus worm counts,with increasing levels of PS supplementation.This study shows that PS supplementation up to 30% of the diet can improve ADG and rumen fermentation while reducing gastrointestinal parasite infection in meat goats.
