Among hybrid energy storage systems(HESSs),battery-ultracapacitor systems in active topology use DC/DC power converters for their operations.HESSs are part of the solutions designed to improve the operation of power systems in different applications.In the residential microgrid applications,a multilevel control system is required to manage the available energy and interactions among the microgrid components.For this purpose,a rule-based power management system is designed,whose operation is validated in the simulation,and the performances of different controllers are compared to select the best strategy for the DC/DC converters.The average current control with internal model control and real-time frequency decoupling is proposed as the most suitable controller according to the contemplated performance parameters,allowing voltage regulation values close to 1%.The results are validated using real-time hardware-in-the-loop(HIL).These systems can be easily adjusted for other applications such as electric vehicles.

This review updates original data describing the experiments showing the complement origin of anaphylatoxins unexplainable submerged under the surface of the articles related to the subject. Next, recalls subsequent data describing the anaphylatoxins peptide nature and sequences, the cell receptors with which they interact and activate and the outcome of the cell responses. The review continues by highlighting the anaphylatoxin biological properties focusing on the unequivocal participation of these mediators in inflammation. The review concludes bringing data reinforcing the promising use of these peptides as molecular primers to create specific and efficient pharmacological antagonists.

Dysregulation of the disintegrin-metalloproteinase ADAM10 may contribute to the development of diseases including tumorigenesis and Alzheimer's disease.The mechanisms underlying ADAM10 sheddase activation are incompletely understood.Here,we show that transient exposure of the negatively charged phospholipid phosphatidylserine(PS)is necessarily required.The soluble PS headgroup was found to act as competitive inhibitor of substrate cleavage.Overexpression of the Ca2+-dependent phospholipid scramblase Anoctamin-6(AN06)led to increased PS externalization and substrate release.Transfection with a constitutively active form of AN06 resulted in maximum sheddase activity in the absence of any stimulus.Calcium-dependent ADAM10 activation could not be induced in lymphocytes of patients with Scott syndrome harbouring a missense mutation in AN06.A putative PS-binding motif was identified in the conserved stalk region.Replacement of this motif resulted in strong reduction of sheddase activity.In conjunction with the recently described 3D structure of the ADAM10 extracellular domain,a model is advanced to explain how surface-exposed PS triggers ADAM 10 sheddase function.

Background:Mycobacterium leprae and Toxoplasma gondii infections are both neglected tropical diseases highly prevalent in Brazil.Infection with certain parasite species can significantly alter susceptibility to other important pathogens,and/or influence the development of pathology.Here we investigated the possible influence of M.leprae/T.gondii co-parasitism on the manifestation of leprosy and its clinical forms.Methods:Participants(n=291)were recruited in Campos dos Goytacazes city,Rio de Janeiro state,southeast Brazil,from August 2015 to December 2019 and clinically diagnosed for leprosy.Participants were selected based on the presence(patients)or absence(healthy controls)of the leprosy disease.Contacts of patients were also recruited for this study.Serum samples from patients(n=199)with leprosy,contacts(n=40)and healthy controls(n=52)were investigated for levels of IgM and IgG anti-phenolic glycolipid-1(PGL-1)by ELISA.Additionally,IgG antibody against soluble Toxoplasma antigen(STAg)was measured in sera samples from leprosy patients,contacts and healthy controls for Toxoplasma gondii serology by ELISA.Anti-PGL-1 IgG and IgM levels were compared using one-way ANOVA Kruskal-Wallis or Mann-Whitney,while Spearman test was used to correlate levels of IgG anti-STAg and IgM/IgG anti-PGL-1 from seropositive and seronegative individuals for T.gondii infection.The risk of T.gondii infection for leprosy disease was assessed using Fisher’s test.Results:Levels of IgM anti-PGL-1 antibodies were significantly higher in multibacillary(MB)patients compared to paucibacillary(PB)patients(P=0.0068).Higher IgM and IgG levels anti-PGL-1 were detected in patients with the lepromatous forms.The serologic prevalence for T.gondii infection was 74.9%.We detected increased anti-STAg antibody levels in leprosy patients(79.4%),reaching 88.8%within those with lepromatous form of this disease.The leprosy risk increase in T.gondii seropositive individuals was two-fold(odds ratio[OR]=2.055;95% confidence intervals[95%CI]:1.18–3.51)higher than

The cellular immune response elicited by Mycobacterium bovis Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) has been carefully investigated, but the humoral immune response has been partially neglected. BALB/c mice were immunized with BCG strain used to immunize humans. Anti-BCG antibodies, as assayed by ELISA, began to appear in the sera after the third week of immunization and plateaued three weeks after the 8th immunization. The total immunoglobulins (Igs) were purified by caprylic acid method from pooled serum collected after the 8th immunization. Anti-BCG antigen antibodies were detected in the total Igs preparation as well as in IgG, IgM, IgA, IgG1, IgG2a, and IgG2b, but not in the IgG3. Distinct BCG proteins were recognized the IgGs in Western blot analysis. Opsonization of BCG bacilli by the purified Igs potentiated internalization of the bacteria by murine Raw 264.7 macrophages. The intracellular BCG elimination coincided with the induction of NO production, which was more pronounced in cells infected with opsonized BCG compared to those infected with the non-opsonized bacteria. Coincidently, the production of NO was also higher in macrophages infected with opsonized BCG (maximal NO production at 48 h of incubation). The obtained results demonstrate that repeated inoculations of BCG effectively activate the humoral immune response, justifying the use of BCG as a live recombinant vaccine vector to insert genes encoding virulence factors controlled by antibodies.
