The Genisteae tribe belongs to the Fabaceae *** wide occurrence of secondary metabolites,explicitly high-lighting the quinolizidine alkaloids(QAs),characterizes this *** the present study,twenty QAs(1-20),including lupanine(1-7),sparteine(8-10),lupanine(11),cytisine and tetrahydrocytisine(12-17),and matrine(18-20)-type QAs were extracted and isolated from leaves of three species(i.e.,Lupinus polyphyllus(’rusell’hybrid),Lupinus muta-bilis,and Genista monspessulana)belonging to the Genisteae *** plant sources were propagated under greenhouse *** isolated compounds were elucidated by analyzing their spectroscopical data(MS,NMR).The antifungal effect on the mycelial growth of Fusarium oxysporum(Fox)of each isolated QA was then evaluated through the amended medium *** best antifungal activity was found to be for compounds 8(IC_(50)=16.5μM),9(IC_(50)=7.2μM),12(IC_(50)=11.3μM),and 18(IC_(50)=12.3μM).The inhibitory data suggest that some QAs could effi-ciently inhibit Fox mycelium growth depending on particular structural requirements deduced from structure-activity relationship *** identified quinolizidine-related moieties can be involved in lead structures to develop further antifungal bioactives against Fox.

Although the fossil record of non-avian dinosaurs from the Cretaceous of Antarctica is the poorest of any continent,fossils representing at least five major taxonomic groups(Ankylosauria,early-diverging Ornithopoda,Hadrosauridae,Titanosauria,and Theropoda)have been *** come from Upper Cretaceous(Coniacian–Maastrichtian)marine and nearshore deposits belonging to the Gustav and Marambio groups of the James Ross Basin at the northern tip of the Antarctic *** majority of these finds have come from the Campanian–Maastrichtian Snow Hill Island and López de Bertodano formations of James Ross and Vega *** the rarity of Antarctic Cretaceous non-avian dinosaurs,discoveries of any fossils of these archosaurs,no matter how meager,are of *** we describe fragmentary new ornithischian(ankylosaur and ornithopod)material from the upper Campanian–lower Maastrichtian Cape Lamb Member of the Snow Hill Island Formation and the Maastrichtian Sandwich Bluff Member of the López de Bertodano *** of these specimens is considered to probably pertain to the holotypic individual of the early-diverging ornithopod Morrosaurus *** also provide an up-to-date synthesis of the Late Cretaceous non-avian dinosaur record of the James Ross Basin and analyze the biostratigraphic occurrences of the various finds,demonstrating that most(including all named taxa and all reasonably complete skeletons discovered to date)occur within a relatively condensed temporal interval of the late Campanian to early *** or all James Ross Basin dinosaurs share close affinities with penecontemporaneous taxa from Patagonia,indicating that at least some continental vertebrates could disperse between southern South America and Antarctica during the final stages of the Mesozoic.

Alterations in Low-Z Elements Distribution in Heart Tissue after Treatments to Breast Cancer Using LEXRF Technique

Data from Global Cancer Statistics show that breast cancer (BC) is the most common type of cancer among women, leading the number of deaths caused by cancer. The developments in diagnosis and treatment techniques for the BC, including chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy, increased the survival rates for this type of cancer. One late complication induced by BC treatment is the cardiotoxicity. This term comprises different cardiotoxic side effects, which include blood pressure alterations, myocardial ischemia, congestive heart failure and other damages. This study aimed to evaluate the cardiac alterations induced by radiotherapy and chemotherapy, simulating a treatment for BC in Wistar rats. It is, therefore, important to understand the mechanisms involved in the cardiotoxicity, in order to prevent women from this late effect, when they undergo BC treatments. The major interests in this work are in Low atomic weight elements as Sodium, because it is strongly related to cardiomyocyte contraction;Magnesium, because it is important in the cardiac metabolism;and Iron, because BC treatment induced cardiotoxicity can be associated to the oxidative stress. Changes that occur in unhealthy tissues in case to cardiovascular damages can be better understood when elemental compounds and structures of healthy tissues are known. Low Energy X-ray Fluorescence (LEXRF) technique was used to obtain elemental maps of low Z-elements providing a semi-quantitative analysis of the tissues evaluated under different conditions. Through the technique LEXRF we obtained elemental and absorption maps. The results showed more damages when associating chemotherapy and radiotherapy in comparison to myocardium healthy. Those images taken together with light microscopy, X-ray absorption and phase contrast images, satisfactorily characterize the cardiac tissue for the first time in the literature, from the structural and morphological points of view. Early Detection of Mild Alzheimer’s Disease in Filipino Elderly: Validation of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment-Philippines (MoCA-P)

Background: The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a useful instrument employed by clinicians to detect cognitive impairment and diagnose probable Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) while in its early stages. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the diagnostic validity of the Philippine version of the MoCA (MoCA-P) among 1385 community-dwelling Filipino elderly from Marikina City, Metro Manila. Results: 509 controls and 97 elderly with probable AD and a Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) global score of 0.5 were included in the analysis. Analysis of variance showed that the AD group was older (p < 0.05) and had fewer years of education (p < 0.05). The optimal cut-off score to differentiate controls from those with probable AD was 20/21, with a sensitivity of 0.835 and a specificity of 0.723, and area under the curve (AUC) of 0.89 (p < 0.001). The positive and negative likelihood ratios were 3.01 and 0.23, respectively;and pre- and post-test odds were 0.0951 and 0.2224, respectively. Logistic regression showed that the odds of scoring < 20 on the MoCA-P increased with advancing age and with education at ≤7 years (p < 0.05). Two points are added to the MoCA-P score for those with ≤7 years of education. Conclusion: The MoCA-P is a valid instrument for the early detection of mild AD among the Filipino elderly.

Bacterial spot caused by Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni (Xap) is considered as a major problem in peach orchards. Copper and antibiotics are used to control, and biocontrol should be a new alternative with low environment impact. The objective was evaluated by the antibiotic activity of the metabolite produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa LV strain. The free cells supernatant was fractionated with a serial organic solvent with crescent polarity and a dichloromethane phase was concentrated and lyophilised, and after was fractionated using vacuum liquid chromatography. The antibiotic activity of the F3 fraction containing an organometallic compound was tested on Xap in vitro and in a greenhouse conditions. Plants were sprayed with F3 before or after Xap infection and the results showed changes in exopolysaccharides and cell morphology. The F3 concentration of 450 μg·mL-1 was more effective. The results showed that F3 fraction could be a new alternative to control bacterial spot.

This study investigated the protective effects of secondary bacterial metabolites, produced by Pseudomonas sp. (bacterium strain LN), on citrus canker disease caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac 306). The LN bacteria strain was cultured in liquid medium and the supernatant free-cells was treated with methanol (AMF) and ethyl acetate (AEF), respectively, and then the extract was concentrated, filtrated, lyophilized and fractionated by vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC). After VLC, eight fractions were obtained. All fractions’ activity against Xac 306 by agar well diffusion assay and minimum inhibitory concentration but in different concentrationswere tested. Cytotoxicity effects were observed in all fractions in 50 μg·mL-1 concentration. The comet assay demonstrated that the fractions EAF, VLC2 and VLC3 presented no genotoxic effects at tested concentrations. In plants only VLC3 showed significant results (p<0.05), reducing the incidence of citrus canker lesions.
