Design and Demonstration of Insect Mimicking Foldable Artificial wing Using Four-Bar Linkage Systems

In this work, we develop an artificial foldable wing that mimics the hind wing of a beetle （Allomyrina dichotoma）. In real flight, the beetle unfolds forewings and hind wings, and maintains the unfolded configuration unless it is exhausted. The artificial wing has to be able to maintain a fully unfolded configuration while flapping at a desirable flapping frequency. The artificial foldable hind wing developed in this work is based on two four-bar linkages which adapt the behaviors of the beetle＇s hind wing. The four-bar-linkages are designed to mimic rotational motion of the wing base and the vein folding/unfolding motion of the beetle＇s hind wing. The behavior of the artificial wings, which are installed in a flapping-wing system, is observed using a high-speed camera. The observation shows that the wing could maintain a fully unfolded configuration during flapping motion. A series of thrust measurements are also conducted to estimate the force generated by the flapping-wing system with foldable artificial wings. Although the artificial foldable wings give added burden to the flapping-wing system because of its weight, the thrust measurement results show that the flapping-wing system could still generate reasonable thrust.

The 5-hydroxytryptamine type-3a receptor（5-HT3a R）as the only ligand-gated ion channel in serotonin receptor family is known to involve in emotion regulation in central nervous ***,the physiological role of 5-HT3a R in synaptic plasticity and memory remains *** we show that in the CA1 region of mouse hippocampus,pharmacological blockade（ondansetron,25n M）or genetic deletion of 5-HT3a R specifically impaired theta burst or 200Hz high frequency stimulation inducedlong-term potentiation（LTP）and LFS induced long-term depression（LTD）,while basal glutamatergic neurotransmission and the metabotropic glutamate receptor dependent LTD were not affected by5-HT3a R *** addition,5-HT3a Rs disruption inhibited AMPA receptors（AMPARs）internalization,without altering basal surface levels of ***,the deletion of 5-HT3a Rs did not lead to loss of synapses and structural alteration of dendritic *** concentrations of 5-HT and5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid（5-HIAA）in the hippocampus were not affected by the deletion of 5-HT3a Rs ***,behavioral studies showed that 5-HT3a R knock-out mice exhibited impaired hippocampus-dependent learning and memory in morris water maze,but had no change in motor coordination and *** results reveal a direct role of 5-HT3a R in hippocampal synaptic plasticity and spatial memory,which possibly serves as an interface between emotional and cognitive processes.

Objective:Delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs to the brain has remained a major obstacle in the treatment of glioma,owing to the presence of the blood-brain barrier and the activity of P-gp,which pumps its substrate back into the systemic *** aim of the present study was to develop an intravenous formulation of HM30181 A(HM)to inhibit P-gp in the brain to effectively deliver paclitaxel(PTX)for the treatment of malignant ***:Two formulations of solubilized HM were designed on the basis of different solid dispersion strategies:i)spray-drying[polyvinlypyrrolidone(PVP)-HM]and ii)solvent evaporation[HP-β-cyclodextrin(cyclodextrin)-HM].The P-gp inhibition of these 2 formulations was assessed on the basis of rhodamine 123 uptake in cancer *** and brain pharmacokinetic parameters were also determined,and the antitumor effect of cyclodextrin-HM with PTX was evaluated in an orthotopic glioma xenograft mouse ***:Although both PVP-HM and cyclodextrin-HM formulations showed promising P-gp inhibition activity in vitro,cyclodextrin-HM had a higher maximum tolerated dose in mice than did *** study of cyclodextrin-HM revealed a plasma concentration plateau at 20 mg/kg,and the mice began to lose weight at doses above this ***-HM(10 mg/kg)administered with PTX at 10 mg/kg showed optimal antitumor activity in a mouse model,according to both tumor volume measurement and survival time(Photopic brain tumor model,the intravenous co-administration of cyclodextrin-HM with PTX showed potent antitumor effects and therefore may have potential for glioma therapy in humans.

Hypertensive-Nimodipine Therapy for Middle Cerebral Artery Vasospasm after Resection of Glioblastoma Multiforme: A Case Report and Literature Review

Delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) due to post-brain tumor resection vasospasm is an often unrecognized yet debilitating complication. We present a patient with DCI after the resection of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). To our knowledge, this is the first report on DCI after GBM resection. A 52-year-old female patient with headache for one month underwent subtotal resection of a left temporal GBM encasing the proximal middle cerebral artery (MCA). She was well during the immediate postoperative period but developed right upper limb dense monoparesis on postoperative day four with computed tomographic angiography confirming left MCA vasospasm. Symptoms were significantly alleviated with weeklong hypertensive therapy and nimodipine administration;however they recurred soon after cessation of treatment. A high index of clinical suspicion is needed for the diagnosis of post-tumor resection DCI. Any new postoperative neurological deficit that cannot be explained by hemorrhage, seizures or infection should be expeditiously investigated by angiography or transcranial Doppler sonography. Prompt initiation of hypertensive and nimodipine therapy can possibly reverse neurological deficit. Treatment should be guided by Doppler, angiographic or perfusion imaging studies and not by clinical improvement alone.

前庭代偿是研究前庭疾病防治策略和成年后由外周损伤导致的中枢神经系统可塑性的重要模型。脑干中的前庭内侧核(medial vestibular nucleus, MVN)是实现前庭代偿的重要中枢。MVN神经元的兴奋性和敏感性对前庭功能的正常执行十分关键,但先前的研究集中关注于单侧外周迷路切除(unilateral labyrinthectomy, UL)这一前庭代偿模型中患侧MVN中神经元兴奋性活动的变化,对双侧MVN神经元动态响应输入刺激的敏感性变化仍知之甚少。本研究采用实时荧光定量PCR、离体脑片全细胞膜片钳记录和行为学方法,观察到UL后6 h,大鼠表现出显著的自发运动障碍,且其患侧而非健侧MVN中B型神经元的兴奋性活动显著降低。但与之相反,健侧而非患侧MVN中的B型神经元对斜坡和阶跃电流刺激的敏感性则显著升高。UL后1周,大鼠基础运动行为得到代偿,其患侧MVN神经元的兴奋性和健侧MVN神经元的敏感性均恢复至正常水平。此外,参与B型MVN神经元敏感性调控的小电导钙激活钾通道(small conductance Ca^(2+)-activated K^(+)channel, SK) UL后6 h在健侧MVN中选择性表达下调,而1周后恢复至正常水平。药理学选择性阻断健侧MVN中的SK通道以抑制其UL后的功能可塑性变化,可显著延迟前庭运动障碍的代偿。本研究结果提示,患侧MVN神经元兴奋性与健侧MVN神经元敏感性的可塑性变化可能共同参与了前庭症状的产生和前庭代偿,而SK通道可能是介导健侧MVN神经元敏感性随前庭代偿动态变化的重要离子机制。
