Effects of financial incentives for treatment supporters on tuberculosis treatment outcomes in Swaziland: a pragmatic interventional study

Background:Swaziland has the highest national incidence of tuberculosis(TB)in the world,with treatment success rates well below the 85%international *** support as part of comprehensive TB services is a core component of the Stop TB *** study investigated the effects of financial incentives for treatment supporters on TB treatment outcomes in ***:This was a controlled study that compared treatment outcomes for patients with a treatment supporter who received or did not receive a financial ***:The intervention group had a higher chance of treatment success as compared with the control group:73%(95%confidence intervals[CIs]66–80%)versus 60%(95%CIs 57–64%),respectively,p=*** improvement remained significant when treatment success rates were adjusted for differences in baseline characteristics,with the effect of incentivised treatment supporters on treatment outcomes having an odds ratio(OR)of *** was also a significant improvement in the death rate in the intervention group,as compared with the control group(10.6 versus 23.5%,p=<0.001).Conclusion:Incentives provided to TB treatment supporters appear to significantly improve TB treatment *** treatment support may be appropriate as an effective addition to support and supervision measures(199 words).

Arsenic dynamics in the rhizosphere and its sequestration on rice roots as affected by root oxidation

A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of root oxidation on arsenic （As） dynamics in the rhizosphere and As sequestration on rice roots. There were significant differences （P 〈 0.05） in pH values between rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils, with pH 5.68-6.16 in the rhizosphere and 6.30-6.37 in non-rhizosphere soils as well as differences in redox potentials （P 〈 0.05）. Percentage arsenite was lower （4%-16%） in rhizosphere soil solutions from rice genotypes with higher radial oxygen loss （ROL） compared with genotypes with lower ROL （P 〈 0.05）. Arsenic concentrations in iron plaque and rice straw were significantly negatively correlated （R = -0.60, P 〈 0.05）. Genotypes with higher ROL （TD71 and Yinjingmanzhau） had significantly （P 〈 0.001） lower total As in rice grains （1.35 and 0.96 mg/kg, respectively） compared with genotypes with lower ROL （IAPAR9, 1.68 mg/kg; Nanyangzhan 2.24 mg/kg） in the As treatment, as well as lower inorganic As （P 〈 0.05）. The present study showed that genotypes with higher ROL could oxidize more arsenite in rhizosphere soils, and induce more Fe plaque formation, which subsequently sequestered more As. This reduced As uptake in aboveground plant tissues and also reduced inorganic As accumulation in rice grains. The study has contributed to further understanding the mechanisms whereby ROL influences As uptake and accumulation in rice.

The available data in humans suggest that rice bran oil (RBO) is an edible oil of preference for improving plasma lipid and lipoprotein profiles similar to more commonly used vegetable oils. The observation that blending RBO with safflower oil at a specific proportion magnifies the hypocholesterolemic efficacy is of particular interest with regard to utilization of this oil. The occurrence of peculiar components such as γ-oryzanol and tocotrienols in RBO might be responsible for its hypocholesterolemic effect

Resonant interaction phenomena of Tollmien-Schlichting waves(T.-***)areexamined experimentally by spectral analysis *** demonstrate that,in the spectrameasured in the vicinity of the critical layer of the unstable boundary layer,the energy of T.-*** in a narrow band of frequency with one to three peaks in the power spectra correspondingto the eigenfrequencies of T.-*** and the frequency with maximum growth rate located betweenthe upper and lower branches of the neutral *** resonant interactions,transfer the energy ofthese eigencomponents to their subsequent subharmonics in a range of R_δ~* where their growth ratesincrease from zero to a maximum value,and the boundary layer becomes turbulent after the thirdresonant interaction.

Effect of Stephania hernandifolia leaf extract on testicular activity in rats

Aim: The testicular inhibitory effect of the aqueous fraction of methanol extract of Stephania hernandifolia leaf was studied in male Wistar rats. Methods: The supernatent and the precipitate part of aqueous fractions of the methanol extract of the leaf were gavaged separately to rat at a similar dose of 200 mg/mL per 100 g body weight per day for 28 days. After cessation of treatment, various observations were conducted. Results: In both treated groups, there were significant decreases in the relative weights of the sex organs, the testicular key androgenic enzymes activities, the plasma level of testosterone, the number of different germ cells at stage VII of seminiferous epithelial cell cycle and the seminiferous tubular diameter in comparison to the controls. Neither of the parts had somatic, renal and hepatic toxicity. This study suggested that the active molecules present in the aqueous fraction of methanol extract of Stephania hemandifolia leaves might be steroids as indicated by thin layer chromatography using specific staining substance for steroid molecules. Conclusion: In rats, the aqueous fraction of methanol extract of the 5. hemandifolia leaves possesses certain testis-inhibitory substances, which may be steroid-like agents.
