Immunohistochemical expression of sP-NK-1R-EGFR pathway and VDR in colonic inflammation and neoplasia

AIM:To determine the expression of neurokinin-1receptor(NK-1R),phosphorylated epidermal growth factor receptor(p EGFR),cyclooxygenase-2(Cox-2),and vitamin D receptor(VDR)in normal,inflammatory bowel disease(IBD),and colorectal neoplasia tissues from Puerto Ricans.METHODs:Tissues from patients with IBD,colitisassociated colorectal cancer(CAC),sporadic dysplasia,and sporadic colorectal cancer(CRC),as well as normal controls,were identified at several centers in Puerto Rico.Archival formalin-fixed,paraffin-embedded tissues were de-identified and processed by immunohistochemistry for NK-1R,p EGFR,Cox-2,and VDR.Pictures of representative areas of each tissues diagnosis were taken and scored by three observers using a4-point scale that assessed intensity of staining.Tissues with CAC were further analyzed by photographing representative areas of IBD and the different grades of dysplasia,in addition to the areas of cancer,within each tissue.Differences in the average age between the five patient groups were assessed with one-way analysis of variance and Tukey-Kramer multiple comparisons test.The mean scores for normal tissues and tissues with IBD,dysplasia,CRC,and CAC were calculatedand statistically compared using one-way analysis of variance and Dunnett’s multiple comparisons test.Correlations between protein expression patterns were analyzed with the Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient.Data are presented as mean±sE.REsULTs:On average,patients with IBD were younger(34.60±5.81)than normal(63.20±6.13,Psporadic dysplasia(68.80±4.42,Psporadic cancer(74.80±4.91,Ps.NK-1R in cancer tissue(sporadic CRC,1.73±0.34;CAC,1.57±0.53)and sporadic dysplasia(2.00±0.45)were higher than in normal tissues(0.73±0.19).p EGFR was significantly increased in sporadic CRC(1.53±0.43)and CAC(2.25±0.47)when compared to normal tissue(0.07±0.25,Pspectively).Cox-2 was significantly increased in sporadic colorectal cancer(2.20±0.23 vs 0.80±0.37 for normal tissues,P<0.05

Hydrochar and synthetic natural gas co-production for a full circular economy implementation via hydrothermal carbonization and methanation:An economic approach

Herein we study the economic performance of hydrochar and synthetic natural gas coproduction from olive tree pruning.The process entails a combination of hydrothermal carbonization and methanation.In a previous work,we evidenced that standalone hydrochar production via HTC results unprofitable.Hence,we propose a step forward on the process design by implementing a methanation,adding value to the gas effluent in an attempt to boost the overall process techno-economic aspects.Three different plant capacities were analyzed(312.5,625 and 1250 kg/hr).The baseline scenarios showed that,under the current circumstances,our circular economy strategy in unprofitable.An analysis of the revenues shows that hydrochar selling price have a high impact on NPV and subsidies for renewable coal production could help to boost the profitability of the process.On the contrary,the analysis for natural gas prices reveals that prices 8 times higher than the current ones in spain must be achieved to reach profitability.This seems unlikely even under the presence of a strong subsidy scheme.The costs analysis suggests that a remarkable electricity cost reduction or electricity consumption of the HTC stage could be a potential strategy to reach profitability scenarios.Furthermore,significant reduction of green hydrogen production costs is deemed instrumental to improve the economic performance of the process.These results show the formidable techno-economic challenge that our society faces in the path towards circular economy societies.

Tracking the change in spanish greenhouse gas emissions through an LMDI decomposition model:A global and sectoral approach

The reduction of GHG emissions to reverse the greenhouse effect is one of the main challenges in this century.In this paper we pursue two objectives.First,we analyze the evolution of GHG emissions in spain in 2008–2018,at both the global and sectoral levels,with the variation in emissions decomposed into a set of determining factors.second,we propose several actions specifically oriented to more tightly controlling the level of emissions.Our results showed a remarkable reduction(18.44%)in GHG emissions,mainly due to the intensity effect,but also to the production-per-capita effect.We detected somewhat different patterns among the various sectors analyzed.While the intensity effect was the most influential one in the agricultural,transport,and others sectors,the production-per-capita effect was predominant in the case of industry.The carbonization effect was revealed as crucial in the commerce sector.The above findings highlight the importance of the energy efficiency measures taken in recent years in the spanish economy,also pointing to the need to deepen those strategies and to propose new measures that entail greater efficiency in emissions.Additional efforts in areas like innovation,R&D,diffusion of more eco-friendly technologies,and a greater use of greener energies all prove to be essential reduction actions to fight the greenhouse effect.

Enhancement of the CO_(2)adsorption and hydrogenation to CH_(4)capacity of Ru–Na–Ca/γ–Al_(2)O_(3)dual function material by controlling the Ru calcination atmosphere

Integrated CO_(2)capture and utilization(ICCU)technology requires dual functional materials(DFMs)to carry out the process in a single reaction system.The influence of the calcination atmosphere on efficiency of 4%Ru-8%Na_(2)CO_(3)-8%CaO/γ-Al_(2)O_(3)DFM is studied.The adsorbent precursors are first co-impregnated onto alumina and calcined in air.Then,Ru precursor is impregnated and four aliquotes are subjected to different calcination protocols:static air in muffle or under different mixtures(10%H_(2)/N_(2),50%H_(2)/N_(2)and N_(2))streams.samples are characterized by XRD,N_(2)adsorption-desorption,H_(2)chemisorption,TEM,XPs,H_(2)-TPD,H_(2)-TPR,CO_(2)-TPD and TPsR.The catalytic behavior is evaluated,in cycles of CO_(2)adsorption and hydrogenation to CH_(4),and temporal evolution of reactants and products concentrations is analyzed.The calcination atmosphere influences the physicochemical properties and,ultimately,activity of DFMs.Characterization data and catalytic performance discover the acccomodation of Ru nanoparticles disposition and basic sites is mostly influencing the catalytic activity.DFM calcined under N_(2)flow(RuNaCa-N_(2))shows the highest CH_(4)production(449μmol/g at 370℃),because a well-controlled decomposition of precursors which favors the better accomodation of adsorbent and Ru phases,maximizing the specific surface area,the Ru-basic sites interface and the participation of different basic sites in the CO_(2)methanation reaction.Thus,the calcination in a N_(2)flow is revealed as the optimal calcination protocol to achieve highly efficient DFM for integrated CO_(2)adsorption and hydrogenation applications.

Identification and functional characterization of fish IL‑17 receptors suggest important roles in the response to nodavirus infection

Th17 is a lymphocyte T helper(Th)subpopulation relevant in the control and regulation of the immune response characterized by the production of interleukin(IL)-17.This crucial cytokine family acts through their binding to the IL-17 receptors(IL-17R),having up to six members.Although the biology of fish Th17 is well-recognized,the molecular and functional characterization of IL-17 and IL-17R has been limited.Thus,our aim was to identify and characterize the IL-17R repertory and regulation in the two main Mediterranean cultured fish species,the gilthead seabream(sparus aurata)and the European sea bass(Dicentrarchus labrax).Our in silico results showed the clear identification of six members in each fish species,from IL-17RA to IL-17RE-like,with well-conserved gene structure and protein domains with their human orthologues.All of them showed wide and constitutive transcription in naïve tissues but with highest levels in mucosal tissues,namely skin,gill or intestine.In leucocytes,T mitogens showed the strongest up-regulation in most of the il17 receptors though il17ra resulted in inhibition by most stimulants.Interestingly,in vivo nodavirus infection resulted in alterations on the transcription of il17 receptors.While nodavirus infection led to some increments in the il17ra,il17rb,il17rc and il17rd transcripts in the susceptible European sea bass,many down-regulations were observed in the resistant gilthead seabream.Our data identify the presence and conservation of six coding IL-17R in gilthead seabream and European sea bass as well as their differential regulation in vitro and upon nodavirus infection.

BACKGROUND Radicular cyst is a lesion of odontogenic origin that arises from epithelial remains due to periapical periodontitis caused by inflammatory reactions generated at the apex of affected teeth with infected or necrotic pulps.The therapeutic mana gement of radicular cysts is controversial.There is only one case report of enucleation of a radicular cyst managed with microsurgery and apicoectomy,but without the use of the guided tissue regeneration(GTR)technique in the same surgical procedure.The present clinical case describes the management of a radicular cyst with microsurgical approach,performance of an apicoectomy of the tooth associated with the entity,application of GTR technique,use of a resorbable membrane of type I bovine collagen,and bovine xenograft.CAsE sUMMARY A 68-year-old patient presented with a radicular cyst from an upper lateral incisor.The microsurgical management used was aimed at enucleating the chemical membrane,performing apicoectomy of the tooth along with careful and precise retrograde filling,and implementing GTR technique using a resorbable collagen membrane and bovine xenograft.The diagnosis of radicular cyst was confirmed using histopathological analysis.The patient underwent follow-up evaluations at 10 and 30 d postoperatively.At 4 months postoperative evaluation,she remained asymptomatic,and radiographs showed significant periapical healing with adequate bone formation.CONCLUsION These results suggest that microsurgical management using the GTR technique with collagen membrane and xenograft,contributes to bone regeneration.

This work shows the synthesis,characterization and evaluation of dense-ceramic membranes made of Ce_(0.85)Gd_(0.15)O_(2-δ)-LaNiO_(3)(CG-LN)composites,where the fluorite-perovskite ratio(CG:LN)was varied as follows:75:25,80:20 and 85:15 wt.%.supports were initially characterized by XRD,sEM and electrical conductivity(using vacuum and oxygen atmospheres),to determine the composition,microstructural and ionic-electronic conductivity properties.Later,supports were infiltrated with an eutectic carbonates mixture,producing the corresponding dense dual-phase membranes,in which CO_(2)permeation tests were conducted.Here,CO_(2)permeation experiments were performed from 900 to 700℃,in the presence and absence of oxygen(flowed in the sweep membrane side).Results showed that these composites possess high CO_(2)permeation properties,where the O_(2)addition significantly improves the ionic conduction on the sweep membrane side.specifically,the GC80-LN20 composition presented the best results due to the following physicochemical characteristics:high electronic and ionic conductivity,appropriate porosity,interconnected porous channels,as well as thermal and chemical stabilities between the composite support and carbonate phases.

In this editorial,we comment on the article by Wang and Long,published in a recent issue of the World Journal of Clinical Cases.The article addresses the challenge of predicting intensive care unit-acquired weakness(ICUAW),a neuromuscular disorder affecting critically ill patients,by employing a novel processing strategy based on repeated machine learning.The editorial presents a dataset comprising clinical,demographic,and laboratory variables from intensive care unit(ICU)patients and employs a multilayer perceptron neural network model to predict ICUAW.The authors also performed a feature importance analysis to identify the most relevant risk factors for ICUAW.This editorial contributes to the growing body of literature on predictive modeling in critical care,offering insights into the potential of machine learning approaches to improve patient outcomes and guide clinical decision-making in the ICU setting.

Estimation of Equivalent Model of Photovoltaic Array Using Unscented Kalman Filters

This paper proposes the use of the unscented Kalman filter to estimate the equivalent model of a photovoltaic(PV) array, using external measurements of current and voltage at the inverter level. The estimated model is of interest to predict the power output of PV plants, in both planning and operation scenarios, and thus improves the efficient operation of power systems with high penetration of renewable energy. The proposed technique has been assessed in several simulated scenarios under different operating conditions. The results show that accurate estimates are provided for the model parameters, even in the presence of measurement noise and abrupt variations under the external conditions.

This work reports the growth and characterization of p-AlInN layers doped with Mg by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy(PAMBE).AlInN was grown with an Al molar fraction of 0.80 by metal-modulated epitaxy(MME)with a thickness of 180 nm on si(111)substrates using AlN as buffer layers.Low substrate temperatures were used to enhance the incorporation of indium atoms into the alloy without clustering,as confirmed by X-ray diffraction(XRD).Cathodoluminescence measurements revealed ultraviolet(UV)range emissions.Meanwhile,Hall effect measurements indicated a maximum hole mobility of 146 cm^(2)/(V∙s),corresponding to a free hole concentration of 1.23×10^(19)cm^(−3).The samples were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPs)estimating the alloy composition and extracting the Fermi level by valence band analysis.Mg-doped AlInN layers were studied for use as the electron-blocking layer(EBL)in LED structures.We varied the Al composition in the EBL from 0.84 to 0.96 molar fraction to assess its theoretical effects on electroluminescence,carrier concentration,and electric field,using sILVACO Atlas.The results from this study highlight the importance and capability of producing high-quality Mg-doped p-AlInN layers through PAMBE.Our simulations suggest that an Al content of 0.86 is optimal for achieving desired outcomes in electroluminescence,carrier concentration,and electric field.
