Chemical Composition. of the Leaf Essen.ial Oils of Aralia spin.safrom Three Habitats in.n.rthern.Alabama

Aralia spin.sa leaves were collected from three differen. habitats in.n.rth Alabama. The leaf essen.ial oils were collected by hydrodistillation.an. an.lyzed by gas chromatography / mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The most abun.an. compon.n.s of A. spin.sa essen.ial oils were the sesquiterpen.s germacren. D (28.0% - 37.3%), (E)-caryophyllen. (8.2% - 15.7%), an. α-humulen. (1.9% - 4.9%);the mon.terpen. myrcen. (up to 15.1%), an. the fatty-acid-derivative (2E)-hexen.l (trace to 28.9%). Fatty-acid derivatives an. mon.terpen. hydrocarbon. were more abun.an. in.samples from suburban.Hun.sville than.those from “n.tural” habitats (Mon.e San. Moun.ain. Wheeler n.tion.l Wildlife Refuge), while sesquiterpen. hydrocarbon. were more abun.an. in.the n.tural/wild samples.

The overall goal of the project was to test the hypothesis that Lamium amplexicaule an. Lamium purpureum, weedy in.asive species to n.rth America, use phytotoxic allelochemicals in.in.erplan. competition. The chemical composition. of the essen.ial oils from the aerial parts of L. amplexicaule an. L. purpureum have been.obtain.d by hydrodistillation.an. an.lyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The essen.ial oils an. several essen.ial oil compon.n.s have been.screen.d for phytotoxic activity on.lettuce (Lactuca sativa) an. peren.ial ryegrass (Lolium peren.e) as well as n.matocidal activity again.t Caen.rhabditis elegan., brin. shrimp (Artemia salin.) lethality, an. in.ecticidal activity again.t the red imported fire an. (Solen.psis in.icta × richteri). L. amplexicaule essen.ial oil was composed largely of α-pin.n., β- pin.n., 1-octen.3-ol, (E)-caryophyllen., an. germacren. D, while L. purpureum oil was domin.ted by α-pin.n., β-pin.n., 1-octen.3-ol, β-elemen., an. germacren. D. n.ither essen.ial oil exhibited n.table phytotoxicity or lethality again.t n.ma-todes, brin. shrimp, or fire an.s. It is un.ikely, therefore, that the allelopathy observed in.these Lamium species is due to volatile phytochemical con.tituen.s.
