Succinic acid is one of the most useful intermediate chemicals that can be produced in a biorefinery *** this study,Actinobacillus succinogenes was immobilized to produce succinic acid using non-detoxified corn fiber hydrolysate(CFH)and a control mimicking the sugars in *** were carried out in a hollow fiber membrane packed-bed biofilm reactor(HFM–PBR)operated in a continuous *** steady-state conditions,the bioconversion process was characterized in terms of sugar consumption,succinic acid and other organic acid *** states were obtained at dilution rates of 0.025,0.05,0.075,0.1,0.2,and 0.3 h^(-1).The optimal results were achieved at the dilution rate of 0.05 h^(-1)and recirculation rate of 50 ml/min with a maximum succinic acid concentration,yield and productivity of 31.1 g/L,0.61 g/g and 1.56 g/L h,respectively,when control was *** acid concentration,yield and productivity of 23.4 g/L,0.51 g/g and 1.17 g/L h,respectively,were obtained when CFH was *** in the HFM–PBR was between 1.3 and 1.9 times higher than productivities for succinic acid production from CFH stated in the *** results demonstrated that immobilized *** has the potential for effective conversion of an inexpensive biomass feedstock to succinic ***,the process has the potential to serve as a means for value-added chemical biomanufacturing in an integrated corn biorefinery.

Advancing age is a major risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease(AD).This raises the question of whether AD biology mechanistically diverges from aging biology or alternatively represents exaggerated *** and modeling studies can inform this question,but without a frm grasp of what drives aging and AD it is difcult to defnitively resolve this *** review speculates over the relevance of a particular hallmark of aging,mitochondrial function,to AD,and further provides background information that is pertinent to and provides perspective on this speculation.

Laser-induced fluorescence of macerals in relation to its hydrogen richness

On the basis of results from conventional elemental analyses and a unique technique (FAMM? fluorescence alteration of multiple macerals), using a laser fluorescence microprobe, the fluorescence characteristics of various macerals are systematically related to hydrogen content. The amount of fluorescence from inertinite and vitrinite exponentially increases with H/C values. Although liptinite has high fluorescence and high H/C values, the relationship does not follow the same trend as defined for the other maceral groups. Because petroleum yields of a maceral mainly depend upon hydrogen richness, a correlation also exists between fluorescence, and gas to oil ratios from pyrolysis. Because individual organic entities are measured, the laser fluorescence microprobe has the benefit of accommodating heterogeneous organic matter in source rocks and enables determination of oil and gas yields of specific macerals.

There is increasing recognition that some nanomaterials may pose a risk to human health and the environment. Moreover, the industrial use of the novel engineered nanomaterials （ENMs） increases at a higher rate than data generation for hazard assessment; consequently, many of them remain untested. The large number of nanomaterials and their variants （e.g., different sizes and coatings） requiring testing and the ethical pressure towards nonanimal testing means that in a first instance, expensive animal bioassays are precluded, and the use of（quantitative） structure-activity relationships （（Q）SARs） models as an alter- native source of （screening） hazard information should be explored. （Q）SAR modelling can be applied to contribute towards filling important knowledge gaps by making best use of existing data, prioritizing the physicochemical parameters driving toxicity, and providing practical solutions for the risk assessment problems caused by the diversity of ENMs. This paper covers the core components required for successful application of （Q）SAR methods to ENM toxicity prediction, summarizes the published nano-（Q）SAR studies, and outlines the challenges ahead for nano-（Q）SAR modelling. It provides a critical review of （1） the present availability of ENM characterization/toxicity data, （2） the characterization of nanostructures that meet the requirements for （Q）SAR analysis, （3） published nano-（Q）SAR studies and their limitations, （4） in silico tools for （Q）SAR screening of nanotoxicity, and （5） prospective directions for the development of nano-（Q）SAR models.

Seemingly contradictory findings between studies are a major issue in nanoecotoxicological research and have been explained as a result of the lack of comparability between assay methods, with dispersion of nanomaterials being identified as a key factor. Here we show the use of a multivariate method, principal component analysis （PCA）, as a tool in protocol development and categorization of dispersion quality. Results show the significance of particle concentration within a protocol, and its effect on repeatability. Our results suggest that future studies should involve the use of PCA as a powerful data exploration tool to facilitate method development, comparability and integration of data across different laboratories.

Hepatic abscess associated with Salmonella serotype B in a chronic alcoholic patient

BACKGROUND: Hepatic abscess secondary to Salmonella is extremely rare in the United States and other Western countries. METHODS: A 43-year-old Caucasian man, with a history of chronic alcohol abuse, was admitted to the hospital for intermittent abdominal pain, fever and diarrhea. Clinical radiological and laboratory results were analyzed. Medical literature in PubMed pertaining to similar cases was reviewed. RESULTS: Stool culture was positive for Salmonella serotype B and a CT scan of the abdomen with contrast was consistent with a solitary hepatic abscess. Appropriate intravenous antibiotics followed by oral maintenance therapy for six weeks resulted in a complete clinical recovery and radiographic resolution. CONCLUSIONS: The cause of Salmonella hepatic abscess in our patient was most likely associated with decreased mucosal resistance to the bacteria, seeding of infection via transient portal bacteremia and loss of host immunity. Our case highlights the fact that appropriate antibiotic alone is sufficient in the management of a solitary hepatic abscess less than 3-5 cm.
