Little is known about the prevalence and risk factors for development of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in Japan. In the United States, it is reported that heredity and social learning contribute to the development of IBS. Our aims were (1) to estimate the prevalence of IBS, (2) to confirm that subjects with IBS are more likely to have parents with a history of bowel problems, (3) to confirm that gastroenteritis is a risk factor for IBS, and (4) to determine w.e.her these two risk factors interact with psychological distress. Prevalence was estimated from a sample of 417 young adults seen for annual health screening examinations. To evaluate risk factors related to consulting physicians, the 46 subjects who fulfilled Rome II diagnostic criteria for IBS but denied ever having seen a physician about these symptoms (IBS non-consulters)were compared to the 317 subjects who did not meet the criteria for IBS (controls) and to a group of 56 patients diagnosed with IBS by gastroenterologists(IBS patients). All subjects completed the Gastrointestinal Symptoms Rating Scale, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Self-Rating Depression Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale, and the SF-36 quality of life scale. Fourteen and two-tenths percent(15.5% of females and 12.9% of males) of the community sample met the criteria for IBS diagnosis, of whom 22% consulted physicians. IBS patients and IBS nonconsulters were more likely than controls to have a parental history (33.9 vs.12.6% , Pents and 26.1 vs. 12.6% , Pers) and were more likely to report an infective history compared to controls (44.6 vs. 16.1% , Pents and 32.6 vs. 16.1% , Pers). Background & Aims: Biofeedback is reported to be as effective for slow transit constipation as for pelvic floor dyssynergia and no more effective than education. we aimed to test the hypothesis that biofeedback benefits only patients with pelvic floor dyssynergia, describe the physiologic mechanism of treatment, and identify predictors of success. Methods: Fifty- two patients (49 women; average age, 35 years), all with delayed whole gut transit, included 34 with pelvic floor dyssynergia, 12 with slow transit only, and 6 who met only 1 of 2 criteria for pelvic floor dyssynergia. All received 5 w.e.ly biofeedback sessions directed at increasing rectal pressure and relaxing pelvic floor muscles during straining plus practice defecating a balloon. Patients were retested by questionnaire; symptom diary; balloon defecation; transit study at 1, 6, 12, and 24 months; and anorectal manometry at 1 and 6 months. Results: At 6 months, greater improvements were seen in pelvic floor dyssynergia compared with slow transit only; 71% versus 8% reported satisfaction (P = .001), and 76% versus 8% reported wel movements per w.e. (P ements were maintained at 24 months of follow- up. Biofeedback eliminated dyssynergia in 91% and enabled 85% to defecate the balloon. Satisfaction was correlated with improved ability to defecate the balloon (ρ = .73; P eductions in dyssynergia (ρ = .69; P eased rectal pressure during straining (ρ = .36; P ess was predicted by pelvic floor dyssynergia, milder constipation, and less frequent abdominal pain at baseline. Conclusions: Biofeedback is an effective treatment for pelvic floor dyssynergia but not slow transit constipation.

Recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) is associated with increased health care visits and school absences. In adults suffering from functional pain, psychosocial factors determine illness behavior and we aimed to investigate its role among children. A community sample of 40 RAP consulters, 41 RAP nonconsulters, and 36 pain-free controls and their mothers completed questionnaires on GI and non-GI symptoms, school absences, psychological symptoms, coping, self-esteem, and behavioral and cognitive responses to RAP. T-tests showed significant differences betw.e. RAP and controls in (1) GI and non-GI symptoms and school absences, (2) child distress and passive coping, and (3) mother’ s IBS severity, somatization, and fears about RAP. RAP consulters reported the same levels of GI symptoms and psychological distress as nonconsulters but missed significantly more school and their mothers reported more fears about RAP. Severity of symptoms and psychological distress did not predict consulting behavior. Only maternal fears about abdominal symptoms differentiated consulters from nonconsulters.

Chirality enables thermal magnon transistors

we report a theory of thermal spin pumping into proximity magnets under a transverse-bias-driven heat flow of magnons in magnetic films w.e. the dipolar coupling to the magnetic gate is tuned to be “chiral”. while there is no rectification of the magnon current in the film, we predict that chirality diverts a large percentage(50% for perfect chirality) of it into the gate. This transverse thermal spin pumping effect can be controlled by rotating the film magnetization and may help manage the heat flow in future magnonic circuits.

Control of dust in underground coal mines is critical for mitigating both safety and health *** decades,the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH)has led research to evaluate the effectiveness of various dust control technologies in coal *** studies have included the evaluation of auxiliary scrubbers to reduce respirable dust downstream of active mining and the use of canopy air curtains(CACs)to reduce respirable dust in key operator *** detailed dust characterization was not a focus of such studies,this is a growing area of *** preserved filter samples from three previous NIOSH studies,the current work aims to explore the effect of two different scrubbers(one wet and one dry)and a roof bolter CAC on respirable dust composition and particle size *** this,the preserved filter samples were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis and/or scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive *** indicate that dust composition was not appreciably affected by either scrubber or the ***,the wet scrubber and CAC appeared to decrease the overall particle size *** an effect of the dry scrubber was not consistently observed,but this is probably related to the particular sampling location downstream of the scrubber which allowed for significant mixing of the scrubber exhaust and other return *** from the insights gained with respect to the three specific dust control case studies revisited here,this work demonstrates the value of preserved dust samples for follow-up investigation more broadly.

Combining video and GPS-tracking to study the spatial foraging distribution of a single-prey loading seabird

Seabirds are valuable indicators of marine ecosystem processes and studying seabird diets can shed light on natural or human-induced variability in food-web *** single-prey loading seabird species such as terns have the potential to act as visual sentinels of prey availability ***,obtaining diet information from remote bird colonies is often challenging and time *** this pilot study we present a novel approach to combine two established methods to study seabird foraging ecology,providing a powerful and cost-effective tool to study the distribution of prey items available to *** combined GPS tracking data of Sandwich Terns(Thalasseus sandvicensis)with prey-observations from a hide in 2012 and 2013,and from semicontinuously recorded camera footage in *** doing so,we identified 115 approximate catch locations of prey(86 herring/sprat Clupeidae,29 sandeel Ammodytidae).Combining GPS-data and prey observations yielded detailed know.e.ge on the movements and chick diets of tracked birds as well as the spatial origin and lengths of captured prey *** catch distances of both Clupeidae and Ammodytidae resulted in deliveries of larger prey items and thus higher energy yield per trip,but also a higher energy expenditure per *** discuss the limitations and potential of our methodological approach to study foraging energetics during chick-provisioning of seabirds that carry prey items visible in their beaks.

Association betw.e. baseline levels of muscular strength and risk of stroke in later life:The Cooper Center Longitudinal Study
