Com.arison of Water Resource m.nagem.nt Program.: An Algae Action Threshold Level Approach

Water resource m.nagem.nt program. designed to control nuisance algal infestations have historically been dom.nated by reactive approaches. With increased regulatory scrutiny regarding algaecide use, data regarding efficacy of integrated m.nagem.nt approaches are needed. This research outlines an efficient m.thod of com.aring m.nagem.nt program. based upon exceeding designated algae action threshold levels (AATL) in pond system.. Phosphorus m.tigating technologies were specifically evaluated as phosphorus had been indicated in supporting m.ny nuisance algal types/densities. The objectives of this research were to evaluate pond m.nagem.nt program. in term. of action thresholds exceeded, num.er of reactive algaecide treatm.nts and algaecide am.unt required to m.intain ponds below AATL. This research com.ared m.nagem.nt program. consisting of: 1) Copper sulfate;2) SeClear Algaecide and Water Quality Enhancer;and 3) Phoslock phosphorus binding technology plus SeClear (as needed). Water and algae sam.les were analyzed every two weeks over two growing seasons on replicated research ponds and com.ared with designated AATL param.ters. If an AATL was exceeded, then a reactive algaecide treatm.nt was im.lem.nted for the corresponding water body. Ponds m.naged by copper sulfate alone exceeded a greater am.unt of AATL and required a significantly greater (P m.unt of reactive algaecide treatm.nts to m.intain control (average 6.5 annually) whereas SeClear and Phoslock plus ponds required 4.3 and 1.8 treatm.nts, respectively. The average am.unt of copper applied to m.intain ponds below AATL was 1414 g with copper sulfate whereas copper am.ndm.nts were significantly decreased with SeClear (830 g) and even further with Phoslock plus m.nagem.nt program. (342 g). Additionally, m.nagem.nt program. incorporating nutrient m.tigation required fewer treatm.nts and less copper in year two of the program. Sponge plant is an em.rging threat that has spread throughout California including the Sacram.nto-San Joaquin Delta, which is an im.ortant water resource for agriculture as well as critical habitat for a variety of threatened and endangered species. m.re data are needed on effective control m.thods for this spreading invader, as current m.nagem.nt practices are not preventing proliferation. The overall objectives of this research were to evaluate im.zam.x, penoxsulam. topram.zone, florpyrauxifen-benzyl, and carfentrazone-ethyl for control of sponge plant using three testing scales, as well as com.are im.ge analysis software to traditional biom.ss response for m.asuring herbicide perform.nce. Overall, 280 g im.zam.x ha&m.nus;1 (with one-percent m.thylated seed oil surfactant) was found as a potent solution for all different growth stages of sponge plant, and 70 g penoxsulam.ha&m.nus;1 as an alternative for control of sponge plant in the seedling and rosette growth stage. The im.ge analysis software yielded sim.lar m.asurem.nt of herbicide effects as traditional biom.ss m.asure. m.socosm.testing indicated im.zam.x treatm.nt sites should be inspected at four week intervals to identify plants m.ssed by prior applications. This research provides water resource m.nagers critical inform.tion for identification of an aquatic invasive species, and selecting an effective rapid m.nagem.nt program.

Fish traps were investigated to understand the effects of season, bait type, trap size, and trap soak tim. on catch rates, catch com.osition, and trap loss rates from.m.rch 2004 to Septem.er 2005, to im.rove the perform.nce and m.nagem.nt of Kuwait＇s gargoor （cage style fish trap） fishery, which used to be the nation＇s m.st im.ortant one in term. of value and landings volum.. Catch rates were the highest in April/m.y （5 8 kg/trap haul） and again in Decem.er （7 kg/trap haul）. Bait type and trap size also affected catch rates and species com.osition. Of the seven baits tested, the best catch rates, 〉5 kg/trap haul, occurred with cuttlefish （Sepia pharaonis）, but wolf-herring （Chiroeentrus dorab） and m.llet （Liza klunzingeri） also produced good results （4-5 kg/trap haul）. Within the five tested sizes, the two largest-sized traps captured m.re fish and larger size fish. Analysis of variance （ANOVA） showed significant differences of catch rate am.ng traps with different baits as well as am.ng traps of different sizes. Duncan test further revealed these differences between two specific baits and sizes. Cluster Analysis of species com.osition showed m.re differences am.ng different baits than am.ng different trap sizes. Longer soak tim.s did not result in larger catch rates, but increased trap loss. About 10-day soak tim. resulted in trap loss 7%, while 40-day soak tim. could result in a loss of around 20%. Consequently, it is recom.ended that the gargoor be checked every 10 or fewer days. The average overall catch rate during the study period was lower than that of 1980s （4.5 vs. 5.8 kg/trap haul）, indicating a possible decline offish abundance in Kuwait＇s waters. It is recom.ended that the num.er of gargoor fishing boats and gargoors from.each boat should be lim.ted to allow stock rehabilitation.

Flash floods are the highest sedim.nt transporting agent,but are inaccessible for in-situ sam.ling and have rarely been analyzed by rem.te sensing *** and field experim.nts were done to develop linear spectral unm.xing(LSU) rem.te sensing m.del and evaluate its perform.nce in sim.lating the suspended sedim.nt concentration(SSC) in flash *** m.dels were developed from.continuous m.nitoring in the laboratory and the onsite spectral signature of river bed sedim.nt deposits and flash floods in the Tekeze River and in its tributary,the Tsirare *** Pearson correlation coefficient was used to determ.ne the variability of correlations between reflectance and *** coefficient of determ.nation(R2) and root m.an square of error(Rm.E) were used to evaluate the perform.nce of the generated *** results found that the Pearson correlation coefficient between SSCs and reflectance varied based on the level of the SSCs,geological colors,and grain *** perform.nce of the LSU m.del and em.irical rem.te sensing approaches were com.uted to be R2=0.92,and Rm.E=±0.76 g/1 in the Tsirare River and R2=0.91,and Rm.E=±0.73 g/1 in the Tekeze River and R2=0.81,Rm.E=±2.65 g/l in the Tsirare river and R2=0.76,Rm.E=±10.87 g/l in the Tekeze River,***,the LSU approach of rem.te sensing was found to be relatively accurate in m.nitoring and m.deling the variability of SSCs that could be applied to the upper Tekeze River basin.

Vascularization is an im.ortant factor in nerve graft survival and function. The specific m.lecular regulations and patterns of angiogenesis following peripheral nerve injury are in a broad com.lex of pathways. This review aim. to sum.arize current knowledge on the role of vascularization in nerve regeneration, including the key regulation m.lecules, and m.chanism. and patterns of revascularization after nerve injury. Angiogenesis, the m.turation of pre-existing vessels into new areas, is stim.lated through angiogenic factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor and precedes the repair of dam.ged nerves. Vascular endothelial growth factor adm.nistration to nerves has dem.nstrated to increase revascularization after injury in basic science research. In the clinical setting, vascularized nerve grafts could be used in the reconstruction of large segm.ntal peripheral nerve injuries. Vascularized nerve grafts are postulated to accelerate revascularization and enhance nerve regeneration by providing an optim.l nutritional environm.nt, especially in scarred beds, and decrease fibroblast infiltration. This could im.rove functional recovery after nerve grafting, however, conclusive evidence of the superiority of vascularized nerve grafts is lacking in hum.n studies. A well-designed random.zed controlled trial com.aring vascularized nerve grafts to non-vascularized nerve grafts involving patients with sim.lar injuries, nerve graft repair and follow-up tim.s is necessary to dem.nstrate the efficacy of vascularized nerve grafts. Due to technical challenges, com.osite transfer of a nerve graft along with its adipose tissue has been proposed to provide a healthy tissue bed. Based on the Peyrard-bishop-Dauxois （i.e. the extended Peyrard-bishop） m.del of DNA dynam.cs, the transversal hydrogen interaction is m.delled by m.rse potential and the im.act of the m.rse param.ters on the DNA dynam.cs is investigated. In particular, we show how m.dulation of the signal, m.ving through the DNA chain, depends on those param.ters. It is also shown that the DNA dynam.cs represents the interplay between dispersion and nonlinearity. Finally, we discuss the values of coupling constants κ and K.
