Trypanosoma cruzi,the causative agent of Chagas disease, interacts with molecules in the midgut of its insect vector to multiply and reach the infective stage. Many studies suggest that the parasite binds to midgut-specific glycans. We identified several glycoproteins expressed in the intestine and perimicrovillar membrane (PMM) of Triatoma (Meccus) pallidipennis under different feeding conditions. In order to assess changes in protein-linked glycans, we performed lectin and immunoblot analyses on glycoprotein extracts from these intestinal tissues using well-characterized lectins, and an antibody, which collectively recognize a wide range of different glycans epitopes. We observed that the amount and composition of proteins and glycoproteins associated with different glycans structures changed over time in the intestines and PMM under different physiological conditions. PMM extracts contained a wide variety of glycoproteins with different sugar residues, including abundant high-mannose and complex sialylated glycans. We propose that these molecules could be involved in the process of parasite-vector interactions.

迄今为止,旨在减轻弹道和弹片攻击的军事级装甲材料在抵抗爆炸冲击方面效果较差。为了改善装甲的爆炸吸收特性,第一步是彻底了解爆炸对人体本身的影响。皮下脂肪组织与人体其他软组织一样,容易受到爆炸冲击和弹片穿透等影响。但是,目前尚缺乏表征脂肪对变化负荷条件的生物力学响应的研究。这为研究脂肪组织负荷的机理提供了充分的依据,这将是改善保护装置设计的关键一步。基于改进PPe的需要,当前的研究工作旨在通过研究在不同应变率下的准静态和动态压缩载荷下的力学性能,来研究脂肪组织的力学。主要目的是通过实验测试和数值模拟来了解组织的应变率响应,并确定最能预测皮下组织AT载荷-变形行为的模型。获得脂肪组织的力学特性,并与现有脂肪组织相结合,为今后生物力学领域的建模提供参考。取猪皮下脂肪组织作为标本。利用MTS万能试验机对试件进行单轴压缩试验,获得应力应变响应数据。试件被切割成10×10×10mm的立方体。分别在0.05%/s、0.5%/s和5%/s三个应变速率范围内进行了试验。选择三阶QLV和一阶Ogden的材料本构模型对皮下脂肪组织的被动行为进行建模。用python代码对实验数据进行数值模拟。超弹性的材料参数;α=8.41μ=16.4,C=-136.980,C=-225.60,C=3636.85。设计了一个有限元模型来模拟脂肪组织。为了得到准确的结果,对它进行了精细的网格划分。0.05%～5%应变率的平均弹性模量和剪切模量为:初始e≈12.71±10.93 k Pa,最终e≈1300±66.60 k Pa。初始刚度模量G≈4.23±2.30 k Pa,最终G≈433.30±22.20 k PaOgden和拟线性粘弹性模型的相关系数R=0.9809,R=0.9986。这些是模型与实验数据在0.5%应变率下的确定系数。实验和仿真结果的比较表明,该模型能够较准确地再现应力应变曲线。因此,所建议的材料参数能够较好地预测皮下脂肪组织的负荷和变形。皮下脂肪组织具有应变速率依赖性,在稳态载荷下表现出非线性的应力-应变响应。它在准静态载荷作用下表现出柔软、顺从的特性,在动态载荷作用下表现出刚性、回弹性的特性。

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2) infection can progress to a severe respiratory and systemic disease named coronavirus disease–2019(COVID-19). The most common symptoms are fever and respiratory discomfort. Nevertheless, gastrointestinal infections have been reported, with symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and lack of appetite. Importantly, SARS-CoV-2 can remain positive in fecal samples after nasopharyngeal clearance. After gastrointestinal SARS-CoV-2 infection and other viral gastrointestinal infections, some patients may develop alterations in the gastrointestinal microbiota. In addition, some COVID-19 patients may receive antibiotics, which may also disturb gastrointestinal homeostasis. In summary, the gastrointestinal system, gut microbiome, and gut-lung axis may represent an important role in the development, severity, and treatment of COVID-19. Therefore, in this review, we explore the current pieces of evidence of COVID-19 gastrointestinal manifestations, possible implications, and interventions.

We consider the problem of inducing withdrawal reflex on a test subject via exposure to a millimeter wave beam. In our physical model, there are 10 physical parameters affecting the occurrence of withdrawal reflex. Our goal is to pinpoint the roles of these physical parameters in inducing withdrawal reflex. We first carry out non-dimensionalization to reduce the model to a non-dimensional system of only 3 composite parameters: non-dimensional beam power density, non-dimensional beam radius, and non-dimensional exposure time. If the beam power is kept on and steady, withdrawal reflex occurs eventually;the shortest exposure time for inducing withdrawal reflex corresponds to the smallest energy consumption at the given power density and beam radius. In the 2D space of power density and beam radius, the overall minimum energy occurs at the corner of very large power density and very small beam radius, which also produces a very large value of maximum skin temperature and a long time to withdrawal reflex. To reduce the burn injury risk, we introduce a cap on the maximum skin temperature. At each given total beam power, we carry out optimizations with respect to the beam radius, constrained by the prescribed temperature cap. The energy consumption varies negatively with the prescribed temperature cap: a lower temperature cap can be accommodated only with a higher energy consumption via the venue of a larger beam radius. The energy consumption is relatively flat with respect to the total beam power and attains a minimum at a moderately large total beam power. The time to withdrawal reflex is approximately inversely proportional to the total beam power. Our analysis demonstrates that a moderately large total beam power is a good compromise to achieve both low energy consumption and short time to withdrawal reflex.

Turfgrass cover in the U.S. is expanding because of increasing urbanization and the addition of approximately 675,000 ha of residential property every year. Despite its large-scale presence in the urban ecosystem, the role of turfgrasses in carbon (C) cycling in home lawns in southeastern U.S. soils has not been documented, and studies with warm-season turf grasses are lacking. The objective of this study was to estimate carbon (C) sequestration in soil as affected by turfgrass species, including: bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. × C. transvaalensis Burtt Davy), centipede grass (erecholmoa ophroides (Munroe) Hack.), and zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.). The study was initiated in the winter of 2012 and conducted for two years on a loamy sand (fine-loamy, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Kanhapludult) soil. eighteen lawns were sampled twice per year: six lawns of each grass species, with the harvested grasses separated into stems, above ground biomass (verdure) + thatch, and belowground roots. Soil samples (0 - 5, 5 - 10, and 10 - 20 cm) were also collected. Total C concentration was determined on finely ground-dried samples by combustion. Turfgrass species, season and years of sampling were all significantly (P ≤ 0.05) affected by C sequestration. Zoysiagrass had the highest mean levels of sequestered C, with a value of 5.54 ± 0.21, compared to 2.09 ± 0.11 and 4.23 ± 0.14 Mg·ha-1·yr-1 under bermudagrass and centipedegrass at the end of the study, respectively. This work indicates that turfgrass home lawns may be an important contribution to the global carbon sequestration level.
