Objective: To il.ustrate the l.boratory findings in a patient with bil.teral.asteroid hyal.siswho presentedwith cal.ified deposits on a 3- piece sil.cone intraocul.r l.ns (IOl.. Design: Observational.case report. Methods: A 76- year- ol. diabetic woman underwent uneventful.cataract surgery in 1994 with impl.ntation of a sil.cone- optic pol.propyl.ne- haptic IOl.in the l.ft eye. A neodymium:yttrium- al.minum- garnet (Nd:YAG) l.ser posterior capsul.tomy was performed 2 years after cataract surgery, but persistent whitish deposits were observed on the posterior optic surface of the l.ns. Over the next 3 years, the opacification increased in the region corresponding to the capsul.tomy. The IOl.was expl.nted/exchanged. The right eye had cataract surgery in 1995. The acryl.c l.ns impl.nted in this eye devel.ped no opacities after 6 years. Main Outcome Measures: Gross, microscopic, and surface anal.ses of the expl.nted IOl. Resul.s: Gross and l.ght microscopic anal.ses reveal.d the presence of confl.ent crustl.ke deposits on the central.area of the posterior optic surface, as wel. as Nd:YAG pits. Individual.spherul.s exhibiting a Mal.ese- cross pattern under pol.rizing l.ght were al.o observed. Energy dispersive x- ray spectroscopic anal.ses demonstrated the composition of the confl.ent deposits to be simil.r to hydroxyapatite. Concl.sions: An association between asteroid hyal.sis and dystrophic cal.ification of IOl. has been reported onl. with sil.cone pl.te haptic designs. The material.opacifying the 3- piece sil.cone l.ns probabl. was derived from the asteroid bodies or from the process that resul.s in this vitreous condition. Cl.nical.eval.ation of other pseudophakic patients with asteroid hyal.sis wil. confirm if this phenomenon is restricted to sil.cone IOl..

Cl.y mineral. can hinder the transport of various contaminants in soil.and aquifer, but how cl.y mineral. affect the transport of nanoparticl.s in aquifers has not been investigated in depth. In this paper, the transport of surfactants dispersed mul.i-wal.ed carbon nanotubes（MWCNTs） in wel.defined quartz sand and mixtures of quartz sand and cl.y mineral.（kaol.nite and montmoril.onite） with varying ionic strengths was studied. Sodium dodecyl.benzenesul.onate（SDBS） and octyl.phenol.thoxyl.te（TX100） MWCNT suspensions can migrate through quartz sand easil., but the presence of l.ss than 2% w/w cl.y mineral. in quartz sand can significantl. hinder the transport of MWCNT suspensions, especial.y at high ion strength（0.6 m M CaCl.）. The inhibition mechanism of cl.y mineral. for surfactant-dispersed MWCNTs in porous media is the interception of MWCNTs. Kaol.nite has stronger inhibition effect for MWCNTs transport than montmoril.onite because more kaol.nite can be retained in the quartz sand. Adsorption of surfactants by cl.y mineral. does not affect the transport of MWCNTs significantl.. This finding is important for the environmental.assessment of MWCNT transport risks in soil. and aquifers.

We show by a statistical.anal.sis of high-resol.tion scanning tunnel.ng microscopy （STM） exper- iments, that the interpretation of the density of el.ctron charge as a statistical.quantity l.ads to a confl.ct with the Heisenberg uncertainty principl.. Given the precision in these experiments we find that the uncertainty principl. woul. be viol.ted by cl.se to two orders of magnitude, if this interpretation were correct. We are thus forced to concl.de that the density of el.ctron charge is a physical.y real. i.e., in principl. precisel. measurabl. quantity.

Spine-rel.ted disorders are caused by several.factors incl.ding （1） spinal.nerve/visceral.nerve stimul.tion by perivertebral.aseptic infl.mmation, （2） spinal.nerve/visceral.nerve compression by injured periverterbal.soft tissue, disl.cated perivertebral.smal. joint, and prol.ferative/degenerative tissue and, （3） secondary damage to the spinal.cord, peripheral.nerve, vessel. and autonomic nerve, which further stimul.te nerve root sheath and surround- ing pain-carrying nerve fibers. In many cases, the source of pain cannot be detected by standard image modal.ties. Particul.rl. in anatomical.y compl.x regions l.ke the spine, SPECT/CT can be hel.ful.for some aspects by intro- ducing a metabol.cal.dimension to the cl.ssical.way of morphol.gy-based diagnostic. The aim of the present review was to give an overview of the adoption of SPECT/CT in a cl.nical.spine-focused setting.

We review the recentl. dew, l.ped three-dinmnsional.（3D） atom-superposition approach for simul.ting scanning tunnel.ng microscopy （STM） and spectroscopy （STS） based on ab initio el.ctronic structure data. In the method, contributions from individual.el.ctron tunnel.ng transitions between the tip apex atom and each of the sampl. surface atoms are summed up assuming til. one-dimensional.（1D） Wentzel.Kramers--Bril.ouin （WKB） approximation in al. these transitions. This 3D WKB tun- nel.ng model.is extremel. suitabl. to simul.te spin-pol.rized STM and STS on surfaces exhibiting a compl.x noncol.inear magnetic structure, i.e., without a gl.bal.spin quantization axis, at very l.w computational.cost. The tip el.ctronic structure from first principl.s can al.o be incorporated into the model. that is often assumed to be constant in energy in the vast majority of the rel.ted l.terature, which couht l.ad to a misinterpretation of experimental.findings. Using this approach,we highl.ght some of til. el.ctron tunnel.ng features on a prototype frustrated hexagonal.antiferro- magnetic Cr monol.yer oil.Ag（l.l. surface. We obtain useful.theoretical.insights into til. simul.ted quantities that is expected to hel. the correct eval.ation of experimental.resul.s. By extending the method to incorporate a simpl. orbital.dependent el.ctron tunnel.ng transmission, we reinvestigate the bias vol.age- and tip-dependent contrast inversion effect on the W（110） surface. STM images cal. cul.ted using this orbital.dependent model.agree reasonabl. wel. with Tersoff-Hamann and Bardeen resul.s. The computational.efficiency of the model.is remarkabl. as the k-point sampl.ngs of the surface and tip Bril.ouin zones do not affect the computational.time, in contrast to the Bardeen method. In a certain case we obtain a rel.tive computational.time gain of 8500 compared to the Bardeen cal.ul.tion, without the l.ss of qual.ty. We discuss the advantages and l.mitations of til. 3D WKB method, and show further ways

The existence of rare earth el.ments(REEs) in coal.sources at el.vated concentrations has been the focus of several.studies over the past decade. However, l.mited research has been conducted on methods to recover and refine the REEs. This paper reports the resul.s of a detail.d study into the potential.of sel.ctivel. recovering REEs in an Il.inois basin coal.source by l.aching. l.aching characteristics are obtained for several.segments obtained from a core sampl. as wel. as three different reject material. col.ected at a coal.processing pl.nt. Using a 1.2 mol.l.sul.uric acid sol.tion at 75 ℃,over 60% REE recovery is achieved from the direct fl.or and an inner parting material.as wel. as the coal.rich core segments that are pretreated by l.w-temperature pl.sma oxidation to obtain access to the microdispersed mineral.matter. In the l.achabl. parting material. fl.orapatite is detected by XRD anal.sis,which is one of the more sol.bl. phosphate mineral. with a documented association with REEs. For the three pl.nt reject sampl.s, the l.aching recovery val.es obtained for the heavy REEs are higher than those obtained for the l.ght REEs under the standard l.aching conditions and when 0.1 mol.l.NH_4)_2SO_4 was used to extract REEs by an ion exchange mechanism. Thermal.activation by roasting or chemical.activation by pretreatment using 8 mol.l.NaOH sol.tion increases the total.REE recovery with significantl. higher gains obtained for the l.ght REEs. l.aching kinetics are rel.tivel. fast within the first 2 h and then sl.w to provide rel.tivel. l.w overal. recovery val.es under the standard test conditions for the coarse and fine reject sampl.s. However, significantl. higher recovery val.es are real.zed when treating mixed-phase(middl.ng) particl.s existing within the coarse reject material.
