Reactive processing of poly(lactic acid)/poly(ethylene octene) blend film with tailored interfacial intermolecular entanglement and toughening mechanism

In order to obtain a uniform and effectively toughened poly(lactic acid)film by blending with low content of poly(ethylene octene)(POE)with high elasticity,the tailored interfacial intermolecular interaction and entanglement between the two phases of the PLA/POE blend was innovatively constructed via the facile reactive melt blending process through the reaction of the epoxy/anhydride groups grafted on the POE chains with the end groups of PLA chains(PLA/GPOE-MPOE).It was observed that POE domains were embedded tightly in PLA matrix with a fuzzy interface and abundant interface transition area,and the impact fractured surface of the blend showed an obvious plastic deformation with less occurrence of fibrillation of PLA matrix or interfacial de-bonding.Compared with neat PLA and directly blended PLA/POE blends,the PLA/GPOE-MPOE blend exhibited much higher complex viscosity/storage modulus,much lower tanδvalues in the terminal region,and obvious strain-hardening behavior.The deviation in viscoelastic behavior of PLA/GPOE-MPOE from linear PLA indicated the enhanced molecular entanglement between the long-branched chains,resulting in an enhancement of the stretching ability during biaxial drawing of the blend.Uniform PLA/GPOE-MPOE films with draw ratio as high as 7×7 were obtained through biaxial stretching,which showed much higher tensile strength and the elongation at break than that of neat PLA and PLA/POE film.This work provides a facile method for fabricating toughening PLA films with application potentials.

In this paper,to better reveal the surface effect and the screening effect as well as the nonlinear multi-field coupling characteristic of the multifunctional piezoelectric semiconductor(PS)nanodevice,and to further improve its working performance,a magneto-mechanical-thermo coupling theoretical model is theoretically established for the extensional analysis of a three-layered magneto-electro-semiconductor coupling laminated nanoplate with the surface effect.Next,by using the current theoretical model,some numerical analyses and discussion about the surface effect,the corresponding critical thickness of the nanoplate,and the distributions of the physical fields(including the electron concentration perturbation,the electric potential,the electric field,the average electric displacement,the effective polarization charge density,and the total charge density)under different initial state electron concentrations,as well as their active manipulation via some external magnetic field,pre-stress,and temperature stimuli,are performed.Utilizing the nonlinear multi-field coupling effect induced by inevitable external stimuli in the device operating environment,this paper not only provides theoretical support for understanding the size-dependent tuning/controlling of carrier transport as well as its screening effect,but also assists the design of a series of multiferroic PS nanodevices.

Triage management plays important roles in hospitalized patients for disease severity stratification and medical burden analysis.Although progression risks have been extensively researched for numbers of diseases,other crucial indicators that reflect patients’economic and time costs have not been systematically studied.To address the problems,we developed an automatic deep learning based Auto Triage Management(ATM)Framework capable of accurately modelling patients’disease progression risk and health economic evaluation.Based on them,we can first discover the relationship between disease progression and medical system cost,find potential features that can more precisely aid patient triage in resource allocation,and allow treatment plan searching that has cured patients.Applying ATM in COVID-19,we built a joint model to predict patients’risk,the total length of stay(Lo S)and cost when at-admission,and remaining Lo S and cost at a given hospitalized time point,with C-index0.930 and 0.869 for risk prediction,mean absolute error(MAE)of 5.61 and 5.90 days for total Lo S prediction in internal and external validation data.

Dengue virus(DENV)is a mosquito-borne virus with a rapid spread to humans,causing mild to potentially fatal illness in hundreds of millions of people each year.Due to the large number of serotypes of the virus,there remains an unmet need to develop protective vaccines for a broad spectrum of the virus.here,we constructed a modified mRNA vaccine containing envelope domain III(E-DIII)and non-structural protein 1(NS1)coated with lipid nanoparticles.This multi-target vaccine induced a robust antiviral immune response and increased neutralizing antibody titers that blocked all four types of DENV infection in vitro without significant antibodydependent enhancement(ADE).In addition,there was more bias for Th1 than Th2 in the exact E-DIII and NS1-specific T cell responses after a single injection.Importantly,intramuscular immunization limited DENV transmission in vivo and eliminated vascular leakage.Our findings highlight that chimeric allogeneic structural and non-structural proteins can be effective targets for DENV vaccine and that they can prevent the further development of congenital DENV syndrome.

Ceramic membrane fouling mechanisms and control for water treatment

Membrane separation, as an important drinking water treatment technology, has wide applications. The remarkable advantages of ceramic membranes, such as chemical stability, thermal stability, and high mechanical strength, endow them with broader prospects for development. Despite the importance and advantages of membrane separation in water treatment, the technique has a limitation: membrane fouling, which greatly lowers its effectiveness. This is caused by organics, inorganic substances, and microorganisms clogging the pore and polluting the membrane surface. The increase in membrane pollution greatly lowers purification effectiveness. Controlling membrane fouling is critical in ensuring the efficient and stable operation of ceramic membranes for water treatment. This review analyzes four mechanisms of ceramic membrane fouling, namely complete blocking, standard blocking, intermediate blocking, and cake filtration blocking. It evaluates the mechanisms underlying ceramic membrane fouling and summarizes the progress in approaches aimed at controlling it. These include ceramic membrane pretreatment, ceramic membrane surface modification, membrane cleaning, magnetization, ultrasonics, and nanobubbles. This review highlights the importance of optimizing ceramic membrane preparation through further research on membrane fouling and pre-membrane pretreatment mechanisms. In addition, combining process regulations with ceramic membranes as the core is an important research direction for ceramic membrane-based water treatment.

Denoising Autoencoder, A Deep Learning Algorithm, Aids the Identification of A Novel Molecular Signature of Lung Adenocarcinoma

Precise biomarker development is a key step in disease management. However, most of the published biomarkers were derived from a relatively small number of samples with supervised approaches. Recent advances in unsupervised machine learning promise to leverage very large datasets for making better predictions of disease biomarkers. Denoising autoencoder(DA) is one of the unsupervised deep learning algorithms, which is a stochastic version of autoencoder techniques. The principle of DA is to force the hidden layer of autoencoder to capture more robust features by reconstructing a clean input from a corrupted one. here, a DA model was applied to analyze integrated transcriptomic data from 13 published lung cancer studies, which consisted of 1916 human lung tissue samples. Using DA, we discovered a molecular signature composed of multiple genes for lung adenocarcinoma(ADC). In independent validation cohorts, the proposed molecular signature is proved to be an effective classifier for lung cancer histological subtypes. Also, this signature successfully predicts clinical outcome in lung ADC, which is independent of traditional prognostic factors. More importantly, this signature exhibits a superior prognostic power compared with the other published prognostic genes. Our study suggests that unsupervised learning is helpful for biomarker development in the era of precision medicine.

Support characteristics of flexible negative Poisson’s ratio anchor cable response to blasting impacts

With the gradual decrease and exhaustion of shallow mineral resources,underground mining has progressed to greater depths.here,the geological environment is significantly more complex and nonlinear,and large deformations of rock masses have great potential to occur.Many geotechnical engineering disasters have occurred even while using Poisson’s ratio(PR)anchor cable supports.To efficiently deal with these issues,a new support material called negative Poisson’s ratio(NPR)anchor cable is proposed;this material can withstand large deformations and provide high constant resistance.In this study,the support characteristics of macro-NPR anchor cable under blasting impact were mainly studied.The support effects of PR anchor cable and macro-NPR anchor cable were compared and analyzed with the help of field experiments and numerical simulations.The results indicate that field experiments and discontinuous deformation analysis accurately reflect the failure state of the selected roadway,as well as the tension and deformation of the anchor cables.The road-way supported by PR anchor cables cannot resist rock bursts under ordinary circumstances.However,the NPR anchor cable-supported roadway resisted a rock burst caused by the impact equivalent to a mine earthquake magnitude above 3;it meets the requirements of roadway stability.

Short review on liquid membrane technology and their applications in biochemical engineering

As a branch of membrane separation technology,liquid membrane has attracted great attention and expanded investigations in biological chemical engineering,with life and health concern in ecosystems.Composed of membrane solvent and mobile carrier,liquid membrane was acquired of function,performing the facilitated mass transfer across the diffusive solvent,so as for the separation and delivery achievement with efficacy.In this review,two types of liquid membrane are mainly focused,respectively on supported liquid membrane(SLM)of membrane solvent supporter in necessity,and on emulsion liquid membrane(ELM)of the required interfacial stabilizers and homogenization.Accordingly,the transfer mechanism,compositions,structure and features of SLM and ELM are introduced respectively.Moreover,the current investigations of liquid membrane have been discussed,focusing on the improvements of efficacy and stability in separation&detection,encapsulation and delivery,so as to scale up the favorable and efficient application with bio-life concern.Prospectively,this review could provide comprehensive insight into the bio-applications of liquid membrane,and guidelines for the further investigations on the efficacy and long-term applicable stability,in order to realize the industrialization.

AIM:At present,the diagnosis of COPD-related pulmonary hypertension（PH）depends on the invasive right heart catheter,and there is no effective treatment.Angiogenesis factors are involved in the pathogenesis and development of PH.However,whether angiogenesis factors contribute to COPD-related PH is not known.This study is designed to investigate whether and which angiogenesis factors could serve as non-invasive indicators for the diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension in the COPD.METHODS:We prospectively enrolled 4 pairs of COPD with or without PH patients.Plasma samples were analyzed by Human Angiogenesis Array Kit,which is a rapid,sensitive tool to synchronously detect the relative levels of expression of 55 angiogenesis related proteins including VEGF,MMP9,TIMP-1,TSP-1.One-tailed,unpaired T test was used to assess associations between variables by Graphpad Prism8.0.1.RESULTS:Among the 55 angiogenesis factors,patients with PH had significantly increased TIMP-1（p=0.0119） and TSP-1（p=0.0385） levels compared to controls without PH,the other 53 factors showed no difference between COPD patients with and without PH.CONCLUSION:These findings demonstrate TIMP-1 and TSP-1 could serve as noninvasive biomarkers to predict whether a COPD patient has PH or not.Despite of the limited sample size,a larger sample evaluation is ongoing in our group to provide more solid evidence to determine whether TIMP-1 or TSP-1 could serve as biomarkers for PH among COPD patients,and we are also investigating whether these two factors could serve as therapeutic targets for PH caused by lung disease and hypoxia.
