Bioinspired nanomaterials for the treatment of bacterial infections

Infectious diseases pose a serious threat to global health.Although immunizations can control most viral infections,bacterial infections,particularly those caused by drug-resistant strains,continue to cause high rates of illness and death.Unfortunately,the creation of new antibiotics has come to a grinding halt in the last ten years.In response to this crisis,nanotechnology has emerged as a hopeful solution to tackle drug resistance and enhance treatment results.A large variety of biomimetic nanomaterials,termed nanozymes,have demonstrated strong antimicrobial efficacy.While the inherent toxicity of nanomaterials is a concern,recent studies have harnessed the stimuli-responsiveness of nanomaterials to enable local and/or targeted delivery to reduce the treatment side effects.Indeed,the physicochemical versatility of nanomaterials affords many degrees of freedom that enable rational design of smart or autonomous therapeutics,which cannot be achieved using conventional antibiotics.The design straddles the fields of catalysis,nanoscience,microbiology,and translational medicine.To provide an overview of this interdisciplinary landscape,this review is organized based on composition into lipid,metal,metal oxide,and non-metallic nanomaterials.Liposomes as a delivery vehicle enhance bioavailability and reduce toxicity.Metal-and metal oxide-based nanomaterials inhibit bacterial growth by mimicking natural enzymatic activities such as peroxidase(POD)and oxidase.Furthermore,carbon-,polymer-,and cell membrane-based nanomaterials are combined into a discussion on non-metallic materials.At the end of this review,potentially fruitful directions for future bioinspired nanomaterials in infectious disease treatment are included.

Preparation of hollow-fiber nanofiltration membranes of high performance for effective removal of PFOA and high resistance to BSA fouling

Nanofiltration(NF)process has become one of the most promising technologies to remove micro-organic combined water pollution.Developing a NF membrane material with efficient separation for perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA)combined pollution is highly desired,this manuscript targets this unmet need specifically.In this work,hydrophilic SiO_(2)nanoparticles with various contents blended with carboxylic multiwalled carbon nanotube were used to modify poly(m-phenylene isophthal amide)(SiO_(2)/CMWCNT/PMIA)hollow fiber NF membrane.The modified membrane with 0.1 wt%SiO_(2)doping exhibits way better fouling resistance with irreversible fouling ratio decreased dramatically from 18.7%to 2.3%,and the recovery rate of water flux increases significantly from 81.2%to 97.7%.The separation experiment results had confirmed that the modified membrane could improve the rejection from 97.2%to 98.6%for perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA)and its combined pollution with bovine serum albumin(BSA).It is clear that this reported SiO_(2)/CMWCNT/PMIA hollow fiber NF membrane potentially could be applied in water treatment.This research also provides a theoretical basis for efficiently removal of PFOA and its combined pollution by NF membrane.

Synergetic N-doped carbon with MoPd alloy for robust oxygen reduction reaction

Synergistic catalysis opens up a new venue to improve the comprehensive application of the catalyst.Herein,a composite catalyst(Mo-Pd@N-C)consisting of the N-doped carbon derived from pyrolysis of spherical polypyrrole and MoPd nanoparticles(NPs)was constructed to emphasize the strong metal-support interaction for robust oxygen reduction reaction(ORR).The enhanced anchoring between the MoPd NPs and the substrate,and the N-species formed on the carbon matrix make the Mo-Pd@N-C deliver excellent performance with a half-wave potential of 0.945 V(vs.reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE))for ORR,superior than that of commercial Pt/C(0.86 V).More importantly,it shows a negligible half-wave potential decline(<5 mV)and only~20%of mass activity(MA)attenuation after 30,000 cycles stability test,obviously better than those of Pt/C(~70%of MA attenuation and~30 mV of half-wave potential decline after only 15,000 cycles).This work highlights a novel synergistic method to prolong the life and improve the commercial prospects of the catalysts.

Picosecond dissipative soliton generation from an ytterbium‑doped fber laser based on a BP/SnSe_(2)‑PVA mixture saturable absorber

Stable picosecond dissipative soliton pulses were observed in an ytterbium-doped fber laser employing a high-quality mixture of BP/SnSe_(2)-PVA saturable absorber(SA).The modulation depth,saturation intensity,and non-saturable loss of the mixture of BP/SnSe_(2)-PVA SA were measured with values of 5.98%,18.37 MW/cm2,and 33%,respectively.Within the pump power range of 150–270 mW,stable dissipative soliton pulses were obtained with an output power of 1.68–4 mW.When the minimum pulse duration is 1.28 ps,a repetition rate of 0.903 MHz,center wavelength of 1064.38 nm and 3 dB bandwidth of 2 nm were obtained.The maximum pulse energy of 4.43 nJ and the signal-to-noise ratio up to 72 dB were achieved at pump power of 270 mW.The results suggest that the BP/SnSe_(2)-PVA mixture SA has outstanding nonlinear saturable absorption characteristics and broad ultrafast laser applications.

Activated phosphoinositide 3-kinase d syndrome 1(APDS1)is a primary immunode-ficiency disease caused by gain-of-function mutations in PIK3CD.Clinical features of autoimmune disease have been reported in patients with APDS1.In this study,we reported three patients with APDS1 presenting with systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE)phenotype.The clinical manifestations included recurrent respiratory tract infection,lymphoproliferation,Coombs-positive hemolytic anemia,decreased complement fractions,positive antinuclear antibodies,renal complications related to SLE associated diseases,which met the clinical spectrum of APDS1 and the classification criteria of SLE.The immunological phenotype included an inversion in the CD4:CD8 ratio,an increase in both non-circulating Tfh CD4^(+)memory T and circulating Tfh populations,a low level of recent thymic emigrant T cells,overexpression of CD57 on T cells,and a decrease in B cells with fewer antibody class switch recombination.These phenotypes detected in patients with APDS1 presenting with SLE were resemble that in patients with APDS1 presenting without SLE.Meanwhile,we described the effect of glucocorticoids and rapamycin therapy on patients with APDS1.The phosphorylation of S6 at Ser235/236 was inhibited in patients with APDS1 who underwent glucocorticoids therapy,including two who presented with SLE phenotype.The phosphorylation of AKT at Ser473 and phosphorylation of S6 at Ser235/236 were inhibited in other patients with APDS1 who underwent rapamycin therapy.Here,we showed the coexistence of immunodeficiency and SLE phenotype in APDS1,and the inhibition of rapamycin in activated Akt-mTOR signaling pathway.

Two types of ultrafast mode‑locking operations from an Er‑doped fber laser based on germanene nanosheets

As a member of Xenes family,germanene has excellent nonlinear saturable absorption characteristics.In this work,we prepared germanene nanosheets by liquid phase exfoliation and measured their saturation intensity as 0.6 GW/cm^(2) with a modulation depth of 8%.Then,conventional solitons with a pulse width of 946 fs and high-energy noise-like pulses with a pulse width of 784 fs were obtained by using germanene nanosheet as a saturable absorber for a mode-locked Erbium-doped fber laser.The characteristics of the two types of pulses were investigated experimentally.The results reveal that germanene has great potential for modulation devices in ultrafast lasers and can be used as a material for creation of excellent nonlinear optical devices to explore richer applications in ultrafast photonics.

High peak power subnanosecond pulse characteristics with different wall structured CNTs in a doubly QML Nd:Lu_(0.15)Y_(0.85)VO_4 laser

By simultaneously employing both an electro-optic modulator and carbon nanotube saturable absorber(CNT-SA)in a dual-loss modulator, a subnanosecond single mode-locking pulse underneath a Q-switched envelope with high peak power was generated from a doubly Q-switched and mode-locked(QML) Nd:Lu_(0.15)Y_(0.85)VO_4 laser at1.06 μm for the first time, to our knowledge. CNTs with different wall structures—single-walled CNTs(SWCNTs),double-walled CNTs(DWCNTs), and multi-walled CNTs(MWCNTs)—were used as SAs in the experiment to investigate the single mode-locking pulse characteristics. At pump power of 10.72 W, the maximum peak power of1.312 MW was obtained with the DWCNT.

运用层次分析理论讨论普通高等学校内部审计质量的评价问题。新时代高校内部审计的主要矛盾是发展的不平衡、不充分,研究高校内部审计的评价因素及其结构具有重要现实意义和理论价值。研究结果显示,高校内部审计质量的评价因素包括审计投入、审计过程、审计产出和审计环境等4个一级指标和内审体制、专业胜任能力、审计程序、审计报告等15个二级指标。一级指标中审计投入因素权重最高,二级指标中,专业胜任能力、内审体制、审计程序、审计报告等因素权重较高,是高校审计质量内部影响因素的核心指标;审计环境通过对内部影响因素起作用而间接影响高校内部审计质量。

Activated phosphoinositide 3-kinaseδsyndrome(APDS)is an autosomal-dominant combined immunodeficiency disorder resulting from pathogenic gain-of-function(GOF)mutations in the PIK3CD gene.Patients with APDS display abnormal T cell homeostasis.However,the mechanisms by which PIK3CD GOF contributes to this feature remain unknown.Here,with a cohort of children with PIK3CD GOF mutations from multiple regions of China and a corresponding CRISPR/Cas9 gene-edited mouse model,we reported that hyperactive PI3Kδdisrupted TNaive cell homeostasis in the periphery by intrinsically promoting the growth,proliferation,and activation of TNaive cells.Our results showed that PIK3CD GOF resulted in loss of the quiescence-associated gene expression profile in naive T cells and promoted naive T cells to overgrow,hyperproliferate and acquire an activated functional status.Naive PIK3CD GOF T cells exhibited an enhanced glycolytic capacity and reduced mitochondrial respiration in the resting or activated state.Blocking glycolysis abrogated the abnormal splenic T cell pool and reversed the overactivated phenotype induced by PIK3CD GOF in vivo and in vitro.These results suggest that enhanced aerobic glycolysis is required for PIK3CD GOF-induced overactivation of naive T cells and provide a potential therapeutic approach for targeting glycolysis to treat patients with APDS as well as other immune disorders.

Amorphous M0S2 confined in nitrogen-doped porous carbon for improved electrocatalytic stability toward hydrogen evolution reaction

Developing non-precious metal catalysts with high activity and stability for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)is of great significance in both scie nee and tech no logy.In this work,N-doped CMK-3,which was prepared with a casting method using SBA-15 as thehard template and ammonia as the nitrogen source,has been utilized to hold MoS2 and restrict its growth to form MoS2@N-CMK-3 composite.As a result,M0S2 was found to have poorly crystallized and the limited space of porous N-CMK-3 made its size much small.Then there are moreactive sites in MoS2.Accordingly,MoS2@N-CMK-3 has exhibited good electrocatalytic performance toward HER in acids with a quite small Tafelslope of 32 mV·dec^-1.And more importantly,compared to MoS2@CMK-3,its stability has been greatly improved,which can be attributedto the interaction between M0S2 and nitrogen atoms avoiding aggregation and mass loss.This work provides an idea that doping a porouscarbon support with nitrogen is an effective way to enhance the stability of the catalyst.
