Information-Defined Networks:A Communication Network Approach for Network Studies

The research of complex networks facilitates the progress of various disciplines,including biology,chemistry,social science,computer,and communication engineering.Recently,it is popular to utilize complex networks to study the communication networks,such as designing efficient routing strategies and robust communication networks.However,exploiting the advantages of communication networks to investigate networks in various disciplines beyond telecommunications is still in infancy.Because of this situation,this paper proposes an information-defined network(IDN)framework by which a complex network can be abstracted as a communication network associated with multiple intelligent agents.Specifically,each component and dynamic process in this framework can be defined by information.We show that the IDN framework promotes the research of unsolved problems in the current complex network field,especially for detecting new interaction types in realworld networks.

Bone morphogenetic protein(BMP-2)has been approved by the FDA to promote bone regeneration,but uncertain osteogenic effect and dose-dependent side effects may occur.Osteoimmunomodulation plays an important role in growth factor-based osteogenesis.Here,we explored how proinflammatory signals affect the dose-dependent osteogenic potential of BMP-2.We observed that the expression level of local IL-1βdid not increase with the dose of BMP-2 in the mouse osteogenesis model.A low dose of BMP-2 could not promote new bone formation,but trigger the release of IL-1βfrom M1 macrophages.As the dose of BMP-2 increased,the IL-1βexpression and M1 infiltration in local microenvironment were inhibited by IL-1Ra from MSCs under osteogenic differentiation induced by BMP-2,and new bone tissues formed,even excessively.Anti-inflammatory drugs(Dexamethasone,Dex)promoted osteogenesis via inhibiting M1 polarization and enhancing BMP-2-induced MSC osteo-differentiation.Thus,we suggest that the osteogenic effect of BMP-2 involves macrophage-MSC interaction that is dependent on BMP-2 dose and based on IL-1R1 ligands,including IL-1βand IL-1Ra.The dose of BMP-2 could be reduced by introducing immunoregulatory strategies.

The solvation structure of Li^(+) in chemical prelithiation reagent plays a key role in improving the low initial Coulombic efficiency(ICE) and poor cycle performance of silicon-based materials. Never theless, the chemical prelithiation agent is difficult to dope active Li^(+) in silicon-based anodes because of their low working voltage and sluggish Li^(+) diffusion rate. By selecting the lithium–arene complex reagent with 4-methylbiphenyl as an anion ligand and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran as a solvent, the as-prepared micro-sized Si O/C anode can achieve an ICE of nearly 100%. Interestingly, the best prelithium efficiency does not correspond to the lowest redox half-potential(E_(1/2)), and the prelithiation efficiency is determined by the specific influencing factors(E_(1/2), Li^(+) concentration, desolvation energy, and ion diffusion path). In addition, molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that the ideal prelithiation efficiency can be achieved by choosing appropriate anion ligand and solvent to regulate the solvation structure of Li^(+). Furthermore, the positive effect of prelithiation on cycle performance has been verified by using an in-situ electrochemical dilatometry and solid electrolyte interphase film characterizations.

Single-pixel imaging(SPI)can capture 2D images of the target with only a nonpixelated detector,showing promising application potential in nonvisible spectral imaging,low-photon imaging,lidar,and other extreme imaging fields.However,the imaging mechanism of traditional SPI makes it difficult to achieve high imaging speed,which is a primary barrier for its widespread application.To address this issue,in this work,we propose and demonstrate a novel high-speed 2D and 3D imaging scheme based on traditional SPI,termed time-resolved single-pixel imaging(TRSPI).Previous SPI works mainly utilize correlation between a stable target and iterative illumination masks to reconstruct a single image.In TRSPI,by further exploiting correlation information between a dynamic scene and every static mask,we can reconstruct a series of time-varying images of the dynamic scene,given the dynamic scene is repetitive or reproducible.Experimentally,we conducted 2D and 3D imaging on a rotating chopper with a speed of 4800 revolutions per minute(rpm),and imaging speeds up to 2,000,000 fps.It is believed that this technology not only opens up a novel application direction for SPI,but also will provide a powerful solution for high-speed imaging.

Objective:To explore the roles of advanced paternal age(APA)and abnormal paternal weight on embryo quality and pregnancy outcomes for unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss(uRPL)couples who underwent preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidies(PGT-A).Methods:This study included 779 uRPL couples who underwent their first PGT-A cycles between 2014 and 2018.Male patients’aging and nutritional status were quantified by paternal age and body mass index(BMI).Routine semen parameters and sperm DNA fragmentation index(DFI)were used to reflect the seminal quality.Blastocyst formation rate and aneuploidy rate were used to reflect the embryo quality.Cycle cancellation rate,implantation rate,pregnancy loss rate,and live birth rate were measured to evaluate the treatment efficiency from IVF.To remove the interference of maternal age,only the women younger than 38 years old were included.After univariate screening,interaction tests were performed in a generalized linear model(GLM)to further examine the effects of paternal age and BMI on each outcome indicator.Results:In the total population(779 cycles),there were no statistical differences in aneuploidy rate,cycle cancellation rate,implantation rate,pregnancy loss rate,and live birth rate,whether stratified by paternal age or paternal BMI.Similar results occurred in the younger men(<40 y.o.,633 cycles).Conversely,among the men with advanced age(≥40 y.o.,146 cycles),there were statistical differences between the three BMI groups in four semen parameters(total sperm number,total motility,progressive motility,and total motile sperm count),implantation rate,and live birth rate.After interaction testing,the results of GLM suggested that the interaction effect between APA and paternal obesity was associated with the low implantation rate of uRPL couples.Conclusions:For the uRPL couples seeking for PGT-A treatment,if the male patients have both advanced age and obesity,their spouses are at higher risks for embryo implantation failure.

A standardized dataset of built-up areas of China’s cities with populations over 300,000 for the period 1990-2015

China’s urbanization has attracted a lot of attention due to its unprecedented pace and intensity in terms of land,population,and economic impact.However,due to the lack of consistent and harmonized data,little is known about the patterns and dynamics of the interaction between these different aspects over the past few decades.Along with the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,a standardized dataset for assessing the sustainability of urbanization in China is needed.In this paper,we used remote sensing data from multiple sources(time-series of Landsat and Sentinel images)to map the impervious surface area(ISA)at five-year intervals from 1990 to 2015 and then converted the results into a standardized dataset of the built-up area for 433 Chinese cities with 300,000 inhabitants or more.This dataset was produced following the well-established rules adopted by the United Nations(UN).Validation of the ISA maps in urban areas based on the visual interpretation of Google Earth images showed that the average overall accuracy(OA),producer’s accuracy(PA)and user’s accuracy(UA)were 91.24%,92.58%and 89.65%,respec-tively.Comparisons with other existing urban built-up area datasets derived from the National Bureau of Statistics of China,the World Bank and UN-habitat indicated that our dataset,namely the stan-dardized urban built-up area dataset for China(SUBAD-China),provides an improved description of the spatiotemporal character-istics of the urbanization process and is especially applicable to a combined analysis of the spatial and socio-economic domains in urban areas.Potential applications of this dataset include combin-ing the spatial expansion and demographic information provided by UN to calculate sustainable development indicators such as SDG 11.3.1.The dataset could also be used in other multidimensional syntheses related to the study of urbanization in China.

Common-mode Electromagnetic Interference Mitigation for Solid-state Transformers

Solid-state transformers(SSTs)have been widely used in many areas owing to their advantages of high-frequency isolation and high power density.However,high-frequency switching causes severe electromagnetic interference(EMI)problems.Particularly,the common-mode(CM)EMI caused by the switching of the dual active bridge(DAB)converter is conducted through the parasitic capacitances in the high-frequency transformer and impacts the system reliability.With the understanding of the CM EMI model in SSTs,CM EMI mitigation methods have been studied.For passive mitigation,the coupled inductor can be integrated with the phase-shift inductor function to reduce CM EMI.For active mitigation,variations in the DAB switching frequency can help reduce the CM EMI peak.An active EMI filter can also be designed to sample and compensate for CM EMI.Using these methods,CM EMI can be reduced in SSTs.

Strong electronic coupling of CoNi and N-doped-carbon for efficient urea-assisted H2 production at a large current density

Exploiting efficient urea oxidation reaction(UOR)and hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)catalysts are significant for energy-saving H2 production through urea-assisted water electrolysis,but it is still challenging.Herein,carbon-encapsulated CoNi coupled with CoNiMoO(CoNi@CN-CoNiMoO)is prepared by solvothermal method and calcination to enhance the activity/stability of urea-assisted water electrolysis at large current density.It exhibits good activity for UOR(E10/1,000=1.29/1.40 V)and HER(E-10/-1000=-45/-245 mV)in 1.0 M KOH+0.5 M urea solution.For the UOR||HER system,CoNi@CN-CoNiMoO only needs 1.58 V at 500 mA cm-2 and shows good stability.Density functional theory calculation suggests that the strong electronic interaction at the interface between NiCo alloy and N-doping-carbon layers can optimize the adsorption/desorption energy of UOR/HER intermediates and accelerate the water dissociation,which can expedite urea decomposition and Volmer step,thus increasing the UOR and HER activity,respectively.This work provides a new solution to design UOR/HER catalysts for H2 production through urea-assisted water electrolysis.
