Air pollution and liver cancer: A systematic review

Air pollution has previously been linked to several adverse health outcomes, but the potential association between air pollution and liver cancer remains unclear. We searched Pub Med, EMBASE, and Web of Science from inception to 10 October 2021, and manually reviewed the references of relevant papers to further identify any related literature investigating possible associations between air pollution and liver cancer. Risk estimates values were represented by statistical associations based on quantitative analyses. A total of 13cohort studies obtained from 11 articles were included, with 10,961,717 participants. PM_(2.5)was the most frequently examined pollutant(included in 11 studies), followed by NO_(2)and NOx(included in 6 studies), and fewer studies focused on other pollutants(PM_(2.5)absorbance,PM_(10), PM_(2.5–10), O_(3), and BC). In all the 16 associations for liver cancer mortality, 14 associations reported the effect of PM_(2.5)on liver cancer mortality. Eight associations on PM_(2.5)were significant, showing a suggestive association between PM_(2.5)and liver cancer mortality. Among24 associations shown by risk estimates for liver cancer incidence, most associations were not statistically significant. For other air pollutants, no positive associations were presented in these studies. PM_(2.5)was the most frequently examined pollutant, followed by NO_(2)and NOx, and fewer studies focused on other pollutants. PM_(2.5)was associated with liver cancer mortality, but there was no association for other air pollutants. Future research should use advanced statistical methods to further assess the impact of multiple air pollutants on liver cancer in the changing socio-environmental context.

Epidemiological features of seasonal influenza transmission among 11 climate zones in Chinese mainland

Background Previous studies provided some evidence of meteorological factors influence seasonal influenza transmission patterns varying across regions and latitudes. However, research on seasonal influenza activities based on climate zones are still in lack. This study aims to utilize the ecological-based Koppen Geiger climate zones classification system to compare the spatial and temporal epidemiological characteristics of seasonal influenza in Chinese mainland and assess the feasibility of developing an early warning *** Weekly influenza cases number from 2014 to 2019 at the county and city level were sourced from China National Notifiable Infectious Disease Report Information System. Epidemic temporal indices, time series seasonality decomposition, spatial modelling theories including Moran’s/ and local indicators of spatial association were applied to identify the spatial and temporal patterns of influenza *** All climate zones had peaks in Winter-Spring season. Arid, desert, cold (BWk) showed up the first peak. Only Tropical, savannah (Aw) and Temperate, dry winter with hot summer (Cwa) zones had unique summer peak. Temperate, no dry season and hot summer (Cfa) zone had highest average incidence rate (IR) at 1.047/100,000. The Global Moran’s/ showed that average IR had significant clustered trend (z = 53.69,P < 0.001), with local Moran’s/ identified high-high cluster in Cfa and Cwa. IR differed among three age groups between climate zones (0-14 years old:F = 26.80,P < 0.001;15-64 years old:F = 25.04,P < 0.001;Above 65 years old:F = 5.27,P < 0.001). Age group 0-14 years had highest average IR in Cwa and Cfa (IR= 6.23 and 6.21) with unique dual peaks in winter and spring season showed by seasonality *** Seasonal influenza exhibited distinct spatial and temporal patterns in different climate zones. The Paris Agreement has prompted much interest in the societal and health impacts of limiting global warming to 1.5 ℃ and 2 ℃. Previous assessments of differential impacts of two targets indicate that 1.5 ℃ warming target would substantially reduce the impact on human health compared to 2 ℃, but they mainly focused on the magnitude of temperature changes under future climate change scenarios without any consideration of greater frequency of cumulative heat exposures within a day. Here we quantified the health risks of compound daytime and nighttime hot extremes using morbidity data in a megacity of China, and also identified the time-period of heat exposure with higher risks. Then we projected future morbidity burden attributable to compound hot extremes due to the half-degree warming. We estimated that the 2 ℃ warming scenario by 2100 as opposed to 1.5 ℃ would increase annual heat-related ambulance dispatches by 31% in Shenzhen city. Substantial additional impacts were associated with occurrence of consecutive hot days and nights, with ambulance dispatches increased by 82%. Our results suggested that compound hot extremes should be considered in assessment of heat-related health impacts, particularly in the context of climate change. Minimizing the warming of climate in a more ambitious target can significantly reduce the health damage.

Background:The unprecedented size of the 2014 Ebola Virus Disease(EVD)outbreak in West Africa has allowed for a more extensive characterization of the clinical presentation and management of this *** this study,we report the trends in morbidity,mortality,and determinants of patient survival as EVD spread into Bong County,***:An analysis of suspected,probable,or confirmed cases of EVD(n=607)reported to the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare(MOHSW)between March 23rd and December 31st 2014 was *** likelihood of infection given exposure factors was determined using logistic regression in individuals with a definitive diagnosis by RT-PCR(n=321).The risk of short-term mortality(30 days)given demographic factors,clinical symptoms,and highest level of treatment received was assessed with Cox regression and survival analyses(n=391).Results:The overall mortality rate was 53.5%(95%CI:49%,58%)and decreased as access to medical treatment *** who reported contact with another EVD case were more likely to be infected(OR:5.7),as were those who attended a funeral(OR:3.9).Mortality increased with age(P<0.001)and was higher in males compared to females(P=0.006).Fever(HR:6.63),vomiting(HR:1.93),diarrhea(HR:1.99),and unexplained bleeding(HR:2.17)were associated with increased *** adjusting for age,hospitalized patients had a 74%reduction in the risk of short term mortality(P<0.001 AHR:0.26;95%CI AHR:0.18,0.37),compared to those not given medical ***:Even treatment with only basic supportive care such as intravenous rehydration therapy was able to significantly improve patient survival in suspected,probable,or confirmed EVD cases.
