Laparoscopic surgery has become increasingly popular in the management of gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) in recent years. One hundred and forty-five patients underwent curative resections of primary gastric stromal tumors between September 2002 and March 2012 were assigned to either an open surgery group (n = 99) or a laparoscopic surgery group (n = 46). In the open surgery group, there was a significantly higher number of samples with a mitotic index ≥ 10 (16.1% vs. 0%), more tumors located in the gastric cardia (13.1% vs. 6.5%), greater operative blood loss (80 mL vs. 50 mL) and a longer postoperative hospital stay (10 days vs. 6 days) than in the laparoscopic group. The surgical morbidity and mortality were 6.1% and 0% in the open group, whereas no complication or mortality in the laparoscopic group. Ten patients in the open group had tumor recurrences and no recurrence in the laparoscopic group. Multivariate analysis showed that tumor size and mitotic index were two independent risk factors associated with tumor recurrence. The 3-year disease-free survival rates and 5-year overall survival rates were similar between the two groups. The laparoscopic approach is a safe alternative procedure for gastric GISTs.

Fabrication and performance of large-detuning InGaAs/GaAs strained double quantum well proton-implanted photonic crystal vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers is reported. The proton implant aperture is used to confine the current flow and the single-point defect photonic crystal is used to confine the optical mode, while the oxide aperture is introduced to reduce the leakage current. Single fundamental mode (Side-mode suppression ratio >20 dB) CW output power of 0.18 mW has been achieved in the 1170 nm range at room temperature.

Biosynthesis of peanut stilbenes, including resveratrol as the secondary metabolites, could be enhanced by subjecting the kernels to germination and wound-stress. Investigations of the bio-elicited peanut sprout powder (BPSP) addressed on characterization of the comprising stilbenes and effectiveness in longevity extension deserves intensive research. In this study, peanut kernels were subjected to germination and wound-stress in preparation of BPSP. The methanol extracts of BPSP were medium pressure liquid chromatographic (MPLC) fractionated and semi-preparative HPLC recovered and followed by instrumental identification and biological activity determinations of the isolated stilbenes. In longevity experiments, 16 female 11-mon-old BALB/c mice and both genders of 12-mon-old ICR mice were daily fed with BPSP supplemented diets at doses of 0, 0.1 and 0.5 g BPSP/kg bw for 750 and 762 days, respectively. Based on chemical characterization, enriched quantity of stilbenes in the BPSP up to ca. 1% (w/w) was detected. Two new stilbene compounds, namely, 4, 5’-dihydroxy-6’’-hydroxymethyl, 6’’-methylpyrano [2’’, 3’’: 3’, 4’] stilbene and 3, 4, 5’-trihydroxy-6’’, 6’’-dimethylpyrano [2’’, 3’’: 3’, 4’]stilbene along with 5 known stilbenes were isolated. The 7 stilbenes exhibited potent antioxidative and antiglycative activities and varied with structure-activity nature. Based on the resultant survival curves and average lifespans of both mouse models, basal diets supplemented with BPSP are effective to extend mouse longevity by a dose dependent manner. It is of merit to demonstrate that peanut kernels as a potent producer could be bio-elicited to biosynthesize a broad spectrum of bioactive stilbenes to prepare BPSP which is effective to extend mouse longevity as science-evidenced by the two long-term animal experiments.

In order to enhance the Pd based anodic catalysts for direct formic acid fuel cells (DFAFCs), the research work includes increasing catalyst activity and preventing CO poison. In this study, various zirconium oxides-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared as the supports of Pd catalysts for DFAFCs by adjusting the preparation parameters: metal adding, sintering temperature and atmospheres. The prepared pure zirconia has both monoclinic and tetragonal phases. The addition of MWCNTs depresses the growth of monoclinic phase. A small amount of Pd adding allows both monoclinic and tetragonal zirconia structures to appear again. Pd nanoparticles of 20 wt% synthesized on MWCNTs and tetragonal ZrO2/MWCNTs have similar particle size, while Pd/[Pd:ZrO2/AO-MWCNTs-300Air-900Ar] have more nanoparticles aggregation. The electrochemical surface area can be improved by adding zirconia which implies those zirconia modified Pd catalysts better electrocatalytic performance. By analyzing the maximum current density and the corresponding potential, Pd/AO-MWCNTs are inferred to undergo the formic acid direct oxidation initially. The Pd catalysts modified by tetragonal ZrO2 have higher current density. Those having both tetragonal and monoclinic ZrO2 modified Pd catalysts have lower potential of formic acid oxidation. All the Pd based catalysts with zirconia modification possess better CO resist ability and electrocatalytic activity. Pd/[ZrO2/AO-MWCNTs-300Air-900Ar] and Pd/[Pd:ZrO2/AO-MWCNTs-300Air-900Ar] which catalyze formic acid in direct oxidation path are the two best catalysts.

Pseudoachalasia is a difficult condition for the clinician to differentiate from idiopathic achalasia even by manometry, radiological studies or endoscopy. Its etiology is usually associated with tumors. In most cases, the diagnosis is made after surgical explorations. The proposed pathogenesis of the disease is considered as mechanical obstruction of the distal esophagus or infiltration of the malignancy that affects the inhibitory neurons of the meyenteric plexus in the majority of cases. Surgery has been reported as a cause of pseudoachalasia. We report a 70-year-old man who suffered from deglutination disorder caused by pseudo-achalasia after truncal vagotomy. The patient was symptom-free after a nine-year follow-up and complete recovery of esophageal motility status from pseudoachalasia after pneumatic dilations. We also reviewed the literature of pseudoachalasia.

目的研发一种通过增加一氧化氮(NO)释放从而选择性改善脉络膜血流的新型药物,用于治疗年龄相关性黄斑变性(AMD)。方法以3,4,5-三甲氧基苯甲醛为原料,经7步反应制得一对立体异构体ZX-4及ZX-5,波谱及元素分析确证其结构,并测定它们对NO生成及眼组织血流的影响。结果以高收率获得了目标化合物,发现反式异构体ZX-5能促进细胞NO的释放,选择性增加脉络膜血流,而顺式异构体ZX-4无此药理作用。结论ZX-5有可能用于AMD的预防或治疗。

MicroRNA-22 (miR-22), a short non-coding RNA that post-transcriptionally regulates mRNA stability and protein synthesis, has been shown to enhance metastatic potential and to suppress HER-3, an important mRNA marker for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the effect of miR-22 has not been investigated in lung adenocarcinoma (LADC), the most common type of NSCLC in the Far East. In this study, we analyzed the role of miR-22 expression in LADC patients. Expression of miR-22 was detected by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and confirmed by cDNA sequencing. Signals of miR-22 in LADC sections were identified using in situ hybridization (ISH). The association between miR-22 expression and survival was evaluated by the log-rank test. Induction of miR-22 expression and the effect on HER-3 levels, as well as the subsequent cell behavior were also investigated In vitro. Two types of miR-22: miR-22 and miR-22H, were detected by RT-PCR. The miR-22H had extra 13 bases, 5’-TGTGTTCAGTGGT-3’, at the 3’-end, and this segment was named miR-22E. Using ISH, miR-22E overexpression was detected in 225 (83.0%) of 271 LADC patients. A significant difference was found in cumulative survival between patients with high miR-22E levels and those with low miR-22E levels (p In vitro, epidermal growth factor induced miR-22, but reduced HER-3 expression. Expression of miR-22 increased cell movement ability. In conclusion, expression of miR-22 is closely associated with tumor recurrence, metastasis and overall survival in LADC patients by suppressing HER-3 protein expression to enhance epithelial-mesenchymal transition and metastasis.
