Role of modern radiotherapy in managing patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the most common type of primary liver *** treatment options are available for managing HCC patients,classified roughly as local,local-regional,and systemic *** high postmonotherapy recurrence rate of HCC urges the need for the use of combined modalities to increase tumor control and patient *** international guidelines offer treatment recommendations based on different points of view and classification ***(RT)is a well-known local-regional treatment modality for managing many types of cancers,including ***,only some of these treatment guidelines include RT,and the role of combined modalities is rarely ***,the present study reviewed clinical evidence for the use of different combined modalities in managing HCC,focusing on modern RT's *** RT has an increased utility in managing HCC patients,mainly due to two driving ***,technological advancement(e.g.,stereotactic body radiotherapy and advanced proton-beam therapy)enables precise delivery of radiation to increase tumor control and reduce side effects in the surrounding normal ***,the boom in developing target therapies and checkpoint-blockade immunotherapy prolongs overall survival in HCC patients,re-emphasizing the importance of local tumor ***,RT combines with systemic therapies to generate the systemic therapy augmented by radiotherapy effect,a benefit now being actively investigated.

Borylation of 1,3-enynes with bis(boronate)compounds often ends up with the formation of hydroborylated products,leaving the diborylation of 1,3-enynes for the formation of 1,4-diborylated allenes to be ***,a copper-catalyzed chemo-,regio-,and stereo-selective diborylation of 1,3-enynes for the efficient construction of 1,4-diborylated allenes under base-free conditions was reported.A wide range of 1,3-enynes bearing various functional groups can participant in the reaction and afforded the corresponding 1,4-diborylated allenes in good to excellent yields,which was enabled by the protocol of Bpin to BF3K *** borylcopper species was supposed to selectively attack the C-C triple bond of the 1,3-enynes.

Tremella polysaccharide mitigates high fat diet-induced anxiety-like behavior through the microbiota-gut-brain axis

High-fat diet (HFD) consumption induces gut microbiota dysbiosis and neuropsychiatric disorders， including anxiety. Previous research found that Tremella polysaccharide (TP) exhibited neuroprotective effects in vitro and in vivo. This study aimed to investigate the beneficial effects of TP on HFD-induced anxiety-like behaviors and elucidate the underlying mechanisms from the point view of the microbiota-gut-brain axis. Two groups of HFD-induced obese mice were orally gavaged with low dose (TPL， 40 mg/kg) and high dose (TPH， 400 mg/kg) of TP. A 12-week administration of TPH could significantly improve anxiety-like behaviors in HFD mice. In the hippocampus， microglia activation， the expression of blood-brain barrier (BBB) markers， and the levels of two neurotransmitters (serotonin and norepinephrine) were countered by TPH in mice consuming HFD. Furthermore， TPH improved the intestinal permeability and immune response of the enterocytes in HFD-fed mice. The gut microbiota dysbiosis induced by HFD was also rebalanced by TP treatments， especially in Proteobacteria and its lower taxa. The correlational analysis also suggested that shifts of some microbial genera were closely associated with body weight and the parameters of behavioral tests. Interestingly， fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) results indicated that fecal microbiota from TPH-treated obese mice could prevent HFD-induced anxiety-like behaviors， suppressing microglia activation and intestinal permeability. In conclusion， the present study indicated that TP intake is a promising dietary intervention strategy to prevent HFD-induced anxiety via the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

Cenozoic stratigraphy of Taiwan:Window into rifting,stratigraphy and paleoceanography of South China Sea

Shallow marine sequences of the northern South China Sea (SCS) are uplifted and exposed by plate convergence in the Taiwan mountain belt. These deposits provide detailed geological information about the rifting event, stratigraphy, sedimentology, paleoclimate and paleoceanography of the shallow SCS to compare with what are recorded in the ODP 1148 deep-sea core. Seismic surveys and marine micropalentological studies show that Eocene sequences in the offshore Taiwan Strait and onland Taiwan mountain belt are all deposited in rifting basins and are covered unconformably by the Late Oligocene-Neogene post-rifting strata. Between syn-rifting and post-rifting sequences, there is a regional break-up unconformity throughout the island. Early Oligocene and Late Eocene strata are missing along the break-up unconformity equivalent to the T7 unconformity in the Pearl River Mouth Basin off south China. This may suggest that the SCS oceanic crust could have initiated between 33 and 39 Ma. Neither obvious stratigraphic gap nor slumping features are found in the Oligocene-Miocene transition interval of Taiwan. This observation highly contrasts with what has been documented from the ODP 1148 deep-sea core. This suggests that the stratigraphic gap and slumping features could only be recorded in the SCS deep sea region, but not in the shallow shelf near Taiwan. Compared to the Middle Miocene paleoceanographic re-organization events in the SCS deep sea, the geological history of the Taiwan shallow sequence shows changes of in sedimentation and faunal composition. Due to the Antarctic glacial expansion at^14 Ma, Middle to late Miocene strata of the Western Foothills show progressive regression sedimentations associated with a decrease of benthic foraminif-eral abundance and a sharp faunal turnover event. Data-Hiding Based on Sudoku and Generalized Exploiting Modification Direction

Division arithmetic and generalized exploiting modification direction （DA-GEMD） method has perfect efficiency in data-hiding. However, there exist some weaknesses in DA-GEMD. Because the benchmarks are their median of nine pixels in each block of cover-image, it will give a hint for the attacker to hack the stego-image. In the paper, we utilize the Sudoku table to randomize the benchmark for each 3×3 block of cover-image. It will mix up the pixels in each image block and prevent the secret information from being extracted. The proposed method still keeps the original efficiency as DA-GEMD while promoting the security for data-hiding.

Efficacy and safety of thalidomide in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM: To evaluate which patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are most likely to respond to thalidomide treatment. METHODS: From July 2002 to July 2004, patients with HCC who received thalidomide treatment, were enrolled. We extracted relevant data from the patients’ medical records, including history and type of hepatitis, comorbidity, serum α-fetoprotein (α-FP) level, volumetric changes in tumor, length of survival, and the dose, duration, side effects of thalidomide treatment. The tumor response was evaluated. On the basis of these data, the patients were divided into two groups: those with either partial response or stable disease (PR + SD group) and those with progressive disease (PD group). RESULTS: Two of 42 (5%) patients had a partial tumor response after treatment with thalidomide, 200 mg/d, and 9 (21%) had stable disease. Patients in the PR + SD group all had cirrhosis. Comparing patients with and without cirrhosis, the former were more likely to respond to thalidomide therapy (PR + SD: 100% vs PD: 64.5%, P = 0.041 < 0.05). Thalidomide was significantly more likely to be effective in tumors smaller than 5 cm (PR + SD: 63.6% vs PD: 25.8%, P = 0.034 < 0.05). Compared with patients with progressive disease (PD), patients in the PR + SD group had a higher total dose of thalidomide (13 669.4 ± 8446.0 mg vs 22 022.7 ± 11 461.4 mg, P = 0.023 < 0.05) and a longer survival (181.0 ± 107.1 d vs 304.4 ± 167.1 d, P = 0.047 < 0.05). Patients with comorbid disease had a significantly greater incidence of adverse reactions than those without (93.8% vs 60.0%, P = 0.021 < 0.05). The average number of adverse reactions in each person with a comorbid condition was twice as high as in those without other diseases (2.2 ± 1.3 vs 1.1 ± 1.2; P = 0.022 < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Thalidomide therapy is most likely to beeffective in patients with early stage small HCC, espe- cially in those with other underlying diseases. Synthesis and characterization of Cu-Pt/MWCNTs for use in electrocatalytic applications

Improving catalyst performance by studying the preparation parameters, material structures and analysis methods is important work for catalyst researchers. In this study, Cu-Pt nanocomposites with different metal ratios were synthesized on MWCNTs using a polyol method. The structures and morphologies of the nano hybrid catalysts were analyzed by XRD and TEM. The XRD results indicate that Pt and Cu formed a bimetallic solid solution. The average diameters of the Pt and Cu-Pt nanoparticles on MWCNTs were between 3-10 nm and 5-15 nm, respectively. The electrocatalytic behavior of methanol oxidation reactions was investigated by cyclic voltammery （CV）. Cu（20%）/[Pt/MWCNTs（1：4）], which contained an optimal degree of solid solution, enhanced the methanol oxidation to the greatest degree.

Low-complexity multiplexer-based normal basis multiplier over GF（2^m）

We present a new normal basis multiplication scheme using a multiplexer-based algorithm. In this algorithm, the proposed multiplier processes in parallel and has a multiplexer-based structure that uses MUX and XOR gates instead of AND and XOR gates. We show that our multiplier for type-1 and type-2 normal bases saves about 8% and 16%, respectively, in space complexity as compared to existing normal basis multipliers. Finally, the proposed architecture has regular and modular con-figurations and is well suited to VLSI implementations.
