In this paper, we study an off-lattice protein AB model with two species of monomers, hydrophobic and hydrophilic, and present a heuristic quasi-physical algorithm. First, by elaborately simulating the movement of the smooth solids in the physical world, we find low-energy conformations for a given monomer chain. A subsequent off-trap strategy is then proposed to trigger a jump for a stuck situation in order to get out of the local minima. The algorithm has been tested in the three-dimensional AB model for all sequences with lengths of 13-55 monomers. In several cases, we renew the putative ground state energy values. The numerical results show that the proposed methods are very promising for finding the ground states of proteins.

In this work, an in situ synthesized TiC-reinforced metal matrix composite （MMC） coating of approximately 350-400μm thickness was fabricated on a gray cast iron （GCI） substrate by plasma transferred arc （PTA） surface alloying of Ti-Fe alloy powder. Microhard- ness tests showed that the surface hardness increased approximately four-fold after the alloying treatment. The microstructure of the MMC coating was mainly composed of residual austenite, acicular martensite, and eutectic ledeburite. Scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and X-ray diffraction analyzes revealed that the in situ TiC particles, which were formed by direct reaction of Ti with carbon originally contained in the GCI, was uniformly distributed at the boundary of residual anstenite in the alloying zone. Pin-on-disc high-temperature wear tests were performed on samples both with and without the MMC coating at room temperature and at elevated temperatures （473 K and 623 K）, and the wear behavior and mechanism were investigated. The results showed that, after the PTA alloying treatment, the wear resistance of the sam- ples improved significantly. On the basis of our analysis of the composite coatings by optical microscopy, SEM with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and microhardness measurements, we attributed this improvement of wear resistance to the transformation of the microstruc- ture and to the presence of TiC particles.

A Cr-Ni-Mo overlayer was deposited on the surface of compacted graphite iron（CGI）by the plasma transferred arc（PTA）alloying *** microstructure of Cr-Ni-Mo overlayer was characterized by optical microscopy（OM）,scanning electron microscopy（SEM）equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy（EDS）,and X-ray diffractometer（XRD）.Results show that the cross-section consists of four regions：alloying zone（AZ）,molten zone（MZ）,heat affected zone（HAZ）,and the substrate（SUB）.The microstructure of AZ mainly consists of cellularγ-（Fe,Ni）solid solution,residual austenite and a network of eutectic Cr7C3 carbide while the MZ area has a typical feature of white cast iron（M3C-type cementite）.The martensite/ledeburite double shells are observed in the *** decreasing the concentration of Cr-Ni-Mo alloys,the fracture mode changes from ductile in the AZ to brittle in the *** maximum hardness of the AZ（450 HV0.2）is lower than that of the MZ（800 HV0.2）.The eutectic M3 C and M7C3 carbides increase the microhardness,while the austenite decreases that of the AZ.

Background and Aims: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common types of cancer, often resulting in death. Augmenter of liver regeneration (ALR), a widely expressed multifunctional protein, has roles in liver dis-ease. In our previous study, we reported that ALR knock-down inhibited cell proliferation and promoted cell death. However, there is no study on the roles of ALR in HCC. Methods: We used in vitro and in vivo models to inves-tigate the effects of ALR in HCC as well as its mechanism of action. We produced and characterized a human ALR-specific monoclonal antibody (mAb) and investigated the effects of the mAb in HCC cells. Results: The purified ALR-specific mAb matched the predicted molecular weight of IgG heavy and light chains. Thereafter, we used the ALR-specific mAb as a therapeutic strategy to suppress tumor growth in nude mice. Additionally, we assessed the prolif-eration and viability of three HCC cell lines, Hep G2, Huh-7, and MHC97-H, treated with the ALR-specific mAb. Com-pared with controls, tumor growth was inhibited in mice treated with the ALR-specific mAb at 5 mg/kg, as shown by hematoxylin and eosin staining and terminal deoxynu-cleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling. Simultaneous treatment with the ALR-specific mAb and adriamycin pro-moted apoptosis, whereas treatment with the ALR-specific mAb alone inhibited cell proliferation. Conclusions: The ALR-specific mAb might be a novel therapy for HCC by blocking extracellular ALR.

Effect of scanning speed during PTA remelting treatment on the microstructure and wear resistance of nodular cast iron

The surface of nodular cast iron （NCI） with a ferrite substrate was rapidly remelted and solidified by plasma transferred arc （PTA） to induce a chilled structure with high hardness and favorable wear resistance. The effect of scanning speed on the microstructure, micro-hardness distribution, and wear properties of PTA-remelted specimens was systematically investigated. Microstructural characterization in-dicated that the PTA remelting treatment could dissolve most graphite nodules and that the crystallized primary austenite dendrites were transformed into cementite, martensite, an interdendritic network of ledeburite eutectic, and certain residual austenite during rapid solidifica-tion. The dimensions of the remelted zone and its dendrites increase with decreased scanning speed. The microhardness of the remelted zone varied in the range of 650 HV0.2 to 820 HV0.2, which is approximately 2.3-3.1 times higher than the hardness of the substrate. The wear re-sistance of NCI was also significantly improved after the PTA remelting treatment.

AIM: To investigate the distribution of HBV genotypes and their YMDD mutations in Guangxi Zhuang population, China, and to study the relationship between HBV genotypes and clinical types of HB, ALT, HBV DNA, HBe system as well as the curative effect of Lamivudine (LAM) on hepatitis ***: A total of 156 cases were randomly chosen as study subjects from 317 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). HBV genotypes were determined by PCR-microcosmic nucleic acid cross-ELISA. YMDD mutations were detected by microcosmic nucleic acid cross-nucleic acid quantitative determination. HBV DNA was detected by fluorescence ratio PCR *** was given to 81 cases and its curative effect was observed by measuring ALT, HBV DNA load, HBeAg, and HBeAg/HBeAb conversion ***: HBV genotypes B, C, D, and non-classified genotypes were found in Guangxi Zhuang *** for 25.6%, 47.4%, 58.3%, and 16.0%,respectively. Seventy-four cases were CD-, CB-, BD-mixed genotypes (47.7%). Forty-six (29.5%) cases had YMDD mutations. Genotype B was mostly found in mild and moderate CHB patients. Genotypes C, D and mixed genotype mostly occurred in severe CHB *** D and CD HBV-infected patients had higher ALT and HBV DNA than patients with other types of HBV infection. There was no significant difference among the genotypes in YMDD mutations, clinical types, ALT and HBV DNA level. Non-classified types geno had a significantly lower positive rate of HBeAg than other genotypes (x2= 12.841, P＜0.05). There was no significant difference in ALT recovery rate, HBV DNA load, HBeAg,and HBeAg/HBeAb conversion rate, 48 wk after LAM treatment between groups of genotypes D, CD, and nonclassified ***: Genotypes B, C, and D, non-classified and mixed genotype of HBV are identified in the Guangxi Zhuang population.
