Enhancement of thermal stability and UV resistance of halloysite nanotubes using zinc oxide functionalization via a solvent-free approach

The aim of this study was to synthesize and evaluate the thermal properties and ultraviolet(UV)resistance of zinc oxide-functionalized halloysite nanotubes(HNT–ZnO).The HNT–ZnO was synthesized using a facile solvent-free *** properties of the HNT–ZnO nanofillers were characterized using zeta-potential measurement,X-ray diffraction(XRD),field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).The immobilization of ZnO nanoparticles onto HNT is feasible even at the lowest mass ratio of HNT/*** TGA results indicate that the thermal stability of the HNT–ZnO nanofillers is higher than that of the ***,UV?Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy(UV-DRS)results show that the HNT–ZnO achieve a total reflectance as high as approximately 87.5%in the UV region,as compare with 66.9%for the *** summary,the immobilization of ZnO onto HNT is a viable approach for increasing the thermal stability and improving the UV shielding of HNT.

Objective:To determine the true prevalence of soil-transmitted helminth infections in the Malaysian aborigines using real-time ***:A total of 122 aborigines from seven tribes were recruited from settlements and nearby hospitals which served the communities,located in four states in Peninsular *** stool samples were examined for the presence of soil-transmitted helminth using real-time PCR and *** latter included the direct wet mount and formalin-ether concentration technique(FECT).The infection load in FECT-positive samples was determined by the Kato-Katz *** real-time analyzer detected five helminth species using two sets of ***:The real-time PCR detected soil-transmitted helminth in 98.4% samples(n=122),which were 1.56 times higher than by *** lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura were detected in more than 90% of the samples,while hookworm was detected in 46.7%(Necator americanus) and 13.9%(Ancylostoma sp.)of the *** with previous reports on the Malaysian aborigines showed that the real-time PCR markedly improved the detection of Ascaris lumbricoides,hookworm and Strongyloides *** real-time PCR detected poly-helminths in 92.6%of the samples compared to 28.7% by *** addition,27 samples(22.1%) showed amplification of Strongyloides stercoralis ***:The real-time PCR showed very high prevalence rates of soil-transmitted helminth infections in the aborigines and is the recommended method for epidemiological investigation of soiltransmitted helminth infections in this population.

The rising production of produced water from oilfields had been proven to bring detrimental environmental *** this study,an efficient,recyclable,and environmental-friendly reduced graphene oxide immobilizedκ-Carrageenan hydrogel composite(κCaGO)was fabricated as an alternative sorbent for crude oil-in-water ***(PEI)was employed to form a stable hydrogel *** conditions for the immobilization of graphene oxide(GO)on PEI-modifiedκ-Carrageenan(κC)beads were optimized *** immobilization yield of 77%was attained at 2%PEI,2 h immobilization activation time,and pH ***,the synthesizedκCaGO is capable of demulsification with an average demulsification efficiency of 70%.It was found that the demulsification efficiency increases with salinity andκCaGO dosage,and it deteriorates under alkaline *** phenomena can be attributed to the interfacial interactions betweenκCaGO and the ***,theκCaGO can be recycled to use for up to six cycles without significant leaching and *** such,the synthesizedκCaGO could be further developed as a potential sorbent substitute for the separation of crude oil from produced water.

Artemisinin,also called qinghaosu,is originally derived from the sweet wormwood plant(Artemisia annua),which is used in traditional Chinese *** and its derivatives(artemisinins)have been widely used for many years as anti-malarial agents,with few adverse side ***,evidence has recently shown that artemisinins might have a therapeutic value for several other diseases beyond malaria,including cancers,inflammatory diseases,and autoimmune *** is a challenging age-associated neurological disorder characterized by deterioration of neuronal structures as well as functions,whereas neuroinflammation has been considered to be an underlying factor in the development of various neurodegenerative disorders,including Alzheimer’s *** discovered properties of artemisinins suggested that they might be used to treat neurodegenerative disorders by decreasing oxidation,inflammation,and amyloid beta protein(Aβ).In this review,we will introduce artemisinins and highlight the possible mechanisms of their neuroprotective activities,suggesting that artemisinins might have therapeutic potential in neurodegenerative disorders.

Women's experiences of formula feeding their infants:an interpretative phenomenological study

Objective: This study aimed to explore the experiences of women in the process of formula feeding their infants. The World Health Organization has emphasized the importance of breastfeeding for infant health. After decades of breastfeeding promotions,breastfeeding rates in Hong Kong have been rising consistently; however, the low continuation rate is alarming. This study explores women's experiences with formula feeding their infants, including factors affecting their decision to do ***: A qualitative approach using an interpretative phenomenological analysis(IPA) was adopted as the study design. Data were collected from 2014 to 2015 through individual in-depth unstructured interviews with 16 women, conducted between 3 and 12 months after the birth of their infant. Data were analyzed using ***: Three main themes emerged as follows:(1) self-struggle, with the subthemes of feeling like a milk cow and feeling trapped;(2) family conflict, with the subtheme of sharing the spotlight; and(3) interpersonal tensions, with the subthemes of embarrassment,staring, and innocence. Many mothers suffered various stressors and frustrations during breastfeeding. These findings suggest a number of pertinent areas that need to be considered in preparing an infant feeding ***: The findings of this study reinforce our knowledge of women's struggles with multiple sources of pressure, such as career demands, childcare demands, and family life after giving birth. All mothers should be given assistance in making informed decisions about the optimal approach to feeding their babies given their individual situation and be provided with support to pursue their chosen feeding method.

Secure information retrieval is an essential task in today's highly digitised *** some applications,it may be necessary that user query's privacy and database content's security are *** these settings,symmetric private information retrieval(SPIR)could be employed,but its implementation is known to be demanding,requiring a private key-exchange network as the base ***,we report for the first time a realisation of provably-secure SPIR supported by a quantum-secure key-exchange *** SPIR scheme looks at biometric security,offering secure retrieval of 582-byte fingerprint files from a database with 800 *** experimental results clearly demonstrate the feasibility of SPIR with quantum secure communications,thereby opening up new possibilities in secure distributed data storage and cloud computinq over the future Quantum Internet.

We propose an angle-based mesh representation, which is invariant under translation, rotation, and uniform scaling, to encode the geometric details of a triangular mesh. Angle-based mesh representation consists of angle quantities defined on the mesh, from which the mesh can be reconstructed uniquely up to translation, rotation,and uniform scaling. The reconstruction process requires solving three sparse linear systems: the first system encodes the length of edges between vertices on the mesh, the second system encodes the relationship of local frames between two adjacent vertices on the mesh, and the third system defines the position of the vertices via the edge length and the local frames. From this angle-based mesh representation, we propose a quasi-angle-preserving mesh deformation system with the least-squares approach via handle translation, rotation, and uniform scaling. Several detail-preserving mesh editing examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Metal contamination in the environment is a global concern due to its high toxicity to living organisms and its worldwide distribution. The principal goal of this review is to examine the current strategies and technologies for the remediation of metal- contaminated soils by metal-accumulating plants and assess the roles of arbnscular mycorrhizal （AM） fungi in remediation of soils under hyperaccumulator or non-accumulator plants. The use of plants to remove metals from the environment or reduce the toxicity, known as phytoremediation, is an environmentally sustainable and low cost remediation technology. The mechanisms of the use of hyperaccumulator plants for phytoremediation included solubilization of the metal in the soil matrix, the plant uptake of the metal, detoxification/chelation and sequestration, and volatilization. Recently, some ecologists have found that phytoremediation with the aids of mycorrhizae can enhance efficiency in the removal of toxic metals. AM fungi can facilitate the survival of their host plants growing on metal-contaminated land by enhancing their nutrient acquisition, protecting them from the metal toxicity, absorbing metals, and also enhancing phytostabilization and phytoextraction. Such information may be useful for developing phytoremediation program at metal-contaminated sites.

This paper reports a simple yet efficient method for the synthesis of hierarchical TiO2-B nanowire@α-Fe2O3 nanothorn core-branch arrays based on a stepwise hydrothermal approach. The as-fabricated hybrid arrays show impressive performance as a high-capacity anode for lithium-ion batteries. The key design in this study is a core-branch hybrid architecture, which not only provides large surface active sites for lithium ion insertion/extraction, but also enables fast charge transport owing to the reduced diffusion paths for both electrons and lithium ions. The peculiar combination of attributes of TiO2 （good structural stability） and Fe2O3 （large specific capacity） provides the hybrid array electrodes with several desirable electrochemical features： large reversible capacity （-800 mA.h.g^-1 for specific mass capacity and -750 μA.h-cm^-2 for specific areal＂ capacity）, good cycling stability, and high rate capability. The impressive electrochemical performance, together with the facile synthesis procedure, may provide an efficient platform to integrate the TiO2 nanowire@Fe2O3 nanothorn core-branch arrays as a three-dimensional thin film electrode for lithium-ion microbatteries.
