Pollutants.and fis. predator/prey behavior： A review of laboratory and field approaches

Fis. behavior can be altered by contaminants. There is.an extens.ve literature on laboratory behavioral as.ays. with many chemicals.impairing feeding or predator avoidance. However, there is.not extens.ve work on fis.es.that live in contami- nated environments. Therefore, we then review our recent res.arch on feeding and trophic relations.of populations.from contami- nated es.uaries.compared with relatively unpolluted s.tes. The mummichog Fundulus.heteroclitus. is.a non-migratory fis.; thos. from more contaminated areas.are poor predators.and s.ower to capture active prey （gras. s.rimp, Palaemonetes.pugio）. In the field, they cons.me much detritus.and s.diment, which is.not nutritious. They are les. active than fis. from cleaner s.tes.and more vulnerable to predation. They have altered thyroid glands.and neurotrans.itter levels. which may underlie altered behaviors.Fis. from the reference s.te kept in tanks.with s.diment and food from the polluted s.te s.owed bioaccumulation and reduced prey capture after two months. although fis. from the polluted s.te did not s.ow s.gnificant improvement when maintained in a clean environment. Poor nutrition and predator avoidance may be res.ons.ble for their being s.aller and having a s.orter life s.an than reference fis.. Bluefis. Pomatomus.s.ltatrix, are a marine s.ecies.in which the young-of-the-year s.end their firs. s.mmer in es. tuaries. We found bioaccumulation of contaminants.and reduced activity, s.hooling, and feeding in young-of-the-year bluefis. from a relatively unpolluted s.te that were fed prey fis. from a contaminated s.te. They als. had altered thyroid glands.and neuro- trans.itter levels. Many field-caught s.ecimens.had empty s.omachs. which is.rare in this.s.ecies. In the fall, when they migrate back out to the ocean, they are s.aller, s.ower, and more likely to s.arve or to be eaten than thos. that s.ent their s.mmer in cleaner es.uaries.[Current Zoology 58 （1）： 9-20, 2012].

Invas.on and predation in aquatic ecos.s.ems

This.article reviews.biological invas.ons.in which predation （or its.abs.nce） plays.a major role in the s.cces. of the invader. Examples.are des.ribed in which the invader out-competes.native s.ecies.for the s.me food, and cas.s.in which the in-vader cons.mes.valued native s.ecies. In many ins.ances. better predator avoidance by the invas.ve s.ecies.or the abs.nce of predators.in the new habitat contributes.to the s.cces. of the invaders. in other cas.s.native or introduced predators.appear to be able to keep the invas.ve s.ecies.in check. A relatively new management approach in the Us.is.the idea of adding another trophic level - to have humans.act as.the predators.and cons.me the invas.ve s.ecies. This.approach is.being utilized in Florida and throughout the Caribbean agains. the lionfis., but could be extended to other fis.es. as.well as.to various.invas.ve crus.aceans.and mollus.s. This.idea is.controvers.al, and current regulations.prohibiting the pos.es.ion of individuals.of the invas.ve s.ecies.（e.g., mitten crabs.or s.akefis.） would preclude the development of a fis.ery for them [Current Zoology 57 （5）： 613~524, 2011].

Breas. cancer detection heavily relies.on medical imaging, particularly ultras.und, for early diagnos.s.and effectivetreatment. This.res.arch addres.es.the challenges.as.ociated with computer-aided diagnos.s.(CAD) of breas.cancer fromultras.und images. The primary challenge is.accurately dis.inguis.ing between malignant and benigntumors. complicated by factors.s.ch as.s.eckle nois., variable image quality, and the need for precis. s.gmentationand clas.ification. The main objective of the res.arch paper is.to develop an advanced methodology for breas.ultras.und image clas.ification, focus.ng on s.eckle nois. reduction, precis. s.gmentation, feature extraction, andmachine learning-bas.d clas.ification. A unique approach is.introduced that combines.Enhanced s.eckle ReducedAnis.tropic Diffus.on (s.AD) filters.for s.eckle nois. reduction, U-NET-bas.d s.gmentation, Genetic Algorithm(GA)-bas.d feature s.lection, and Random Fores. and Bagging Tree clas.ifiers. res.lting in a novel and efficientmodel. To tes. and validate the hybrid model, rigorous.experimentations.were performed and res.lts.s.ate thatthe propos.d hybrid model achieved accuracy rate of 99.9%, outperforming other exis.ing techniques. and als.s.gnificantly reducing computational time. This.enhanced accuracy, along with improved s.ns.tivity and s.ecificity,makes.the propos.d hybrid model a valuable addition to CAD s.s.ems.in breas. cancer diagnos.s. ultimatelyenhancing diagnos.ic accuracy in clinical applications.

Introduction: Tes.icular cancer accounts.for 5% of urological tumors. predominantly affecting young men. The aim of our s.udy was.to report the diagnos.ic and evolutionary as.ects.of tes.icular cancer cas.s.treated in our center. Patients.and Methods. A retros.ective s.udy conducted over a 15-year period involving 12 patients.treated for tes.icular cancer at the Univers.ty Hos.ital of Brazzaville. Res.lts. The median age was.31 years.(range 11 to 49 years., with a median cons.ltation delay of 10.6 months.(range 3 to 27 months.. s.rotal mas. was.the mos. common reas.n for cons.ltation. Cancer was.bilateral in two patients. Two patients.were admitted with metas.atic dis.as.. His.opathological examination favored germ cell tumors.in 7 cas.s. two cas.s.of non-Hodgkin’s.malignant lymphoma, and one cas. of epididymo-tes.icular adenocarcinoma. Adjuvant chemotherapy res.lted in complete remis.ion in patients.with germ cell tumors. However, neoadjuvant chemotherapy was.not effective in patients.admitted with advanced-s.age dis.as.. Conclus.on: Tes.icular cancer is.a rare condition that is.curable in the majority of cas.s. but its.management is.often complicated in our s.tting due to delayed diagnos.s.caus.d by taboos.s.rrounding genital organ pathologies.
