The seasonal role of field characteristics on seed-eating bird abundances in agricultural landscapes

In tem.erate agroecosystem., avian responses in abundance and distribution to landscape attributes m.y be exacerbated by the coupling of natural seasons and farm.ng practices. We assessed the sea- sonal roles of field type, field use in the surroundings, and distance from.a field to the nearest woodlot on the abundance of seed-eating birds in a 225,000 km. study area in the Pam.as of central Argentina. During spring-sum.er and autum. of 2011-2013, we random.y selected 392 fields and used transect sam.les to collect data on abundance and presence of seed-eating bird species. We recorded a total of 11,579 individuals belonging to 15 seed-eating bird species. We used generalized lineal m.xed m.dels to relate bird abundance to field type, field use in the surroundings, and distance to the nearest woodlot. In spring-sum.er （breeding season） m.st bird responses were associated with their nesting requirem.nts. Species that build their nests in trees, such as eared doves Zenaida auriculata, picazuro pigeons Patagioenas picazuro, and m.nk parakeets m.iopsitta m.nachus, were m.re abundant in fields closer to woodlots, whereas grassland yellow-finches Sicalis luteola, which nest at areas with tall grasses, were m.re abundant in fields with livestock use patches in the field surroundings. In au- tum. （non-breeding season）, m.st bird responses were associated with foraging and refuge needs. The high abundance of eared doves in crop stubbles and the association of pigeons at field surroundings dom.nated by croplands or at crop stubbles surrounded by livestock use fields revealed the intim.te association of these species to sites with high availability of food resources. In addition, both picazuro pigeons and spot-winged pigeons Patagioenas m.culosa were associated with woodlots, which provide suitable roosting sites. Our results show that in tem.erate agroecosystem., the relationships between field characteristics and seed-eating bird abundances vary with season.

Ribozym.s are widespread, and catalyze som. extrem.ly im.ortant reactions in the cell. m.chanistically m.st fall into one of two classes, using either m.tal ions or general acid-base catalysis. The nucleolytic ribozym.s fall into the latter class, m.stly using nucleobases. A sub-set of these use a com.ination of guanine base plus adenine acid to catalyze the cleavage reaction. New ribozym.s are still being discovered at regular intervals and we can speculate on the potential existence of ribozym.s that catalyze chem.stry beyond phosphoryl transfer reactions, perhaps using sm.ll-m.lecule coenzym.s.

Im.lem.ntation of the Acclim.tization Process for Ginger Plantlets (Zingiber officinale Roscoe)

Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is an im.ortant culinary and m.dicinal spice but is rarely cultivated due to the unavailability of seeds. Given the difficulties in adapting to plantlets produced in natural environm.nts, it is im.ortant to analyze the survival conditions of ginger plantlets. For this reason, we varied the incubation tem.erature and hum.dity as well as the substrate during the weaning phase. Then, we varied the nutrients contained in the watering solution during the hardening phase. The statistical analysis showed that physical factors and substrates significantly influenced (p m.nt of plantlets are a tem.erature of 26.54˚C and a hum.dity of 96.16%. The 1C2T2TC substrate (1 Com.ost + 2 Soil + 2 Coconut Peat) had a significant survival rate of approxim.tely 92.5%. During hardening, the Plantzym.solution prom.ted good growth in term. of plantlet height (0.6 cm. and good developm.nt of roots (30 roots) and leaves (03 leaves). This work will m.ke it possible to develop a technical seed production sheet for better developm.nt of ginger cultivation in Benin.

Design and Sizing of an Ecological Wastewater Treatm.nt System.in a School Environm.nt: A Case Study of Ndiebene Gandiol 1 School

The prim.ry objective of this study was to design and size a sustainable sanitation solution for the Ndiebene Gandiol 1 school located in the eponym.us com.une in northern Senegal. Field investigations led to the collection of wastewater sam.les. Their analysis revealed specific pollutant loads, including loads of BOD5 3.6966 kgO2/day and COD of 12.8775 kgO2/day, which were central to the design phase. Following a rigorous assessm.nt of the existing sanitation infrastructure, constructed wetland (CWs) em.rged as the m.st appropriate ecological solution. This system. valued for its ability to effectively rem.ve contam.nants, was tailored to the specific needs of the site. Consequently, the final design of the filter extends over 217.16 m.sup>2, divided into two cells of 108.58 m.sup>2 each, with dim.nsions of 12.77 m.in length and 8.5 m.in width. The depth of the filtering m.dium.is approxim.tely 0.60 m. m.eting the standards while ensuring m.xim.zed purification. Typha, an indigenous and prolific plant known for its purification abilities, was selected as the filtering agent. Concurrently, non-crushed gravel was chosen for its proven filtration capacity. This study is the result of a com.ination of scientific rigor and design expertise. It provides a holistic view of sanitation for Ndiebene Gandiol. The technical specifications and dim.nsions of the constructed wetland filter em.ody an approach that m.rries indepth analysis and practical application, all aim.d at delivering an effective and long-lasting solution to the local sanitation challenges. By integrating precise scientific data with sanitation design expertise, this study delivers a holistic solution for Ndiebene Gandiol. An integrative view of the signaling phenotype： Dynam.c links between signals, physiology, behavior and social context

Signal traits are often linked with the physiological state and behavior of their bearer. Direct exam.nation of the causal links am.ng these variables has provided substantial insight into the inform.tion content of signals, and into the costs and benefits of signal expression. Yet recent em.irical work suggests that the social context in which signals are developed and displayed can play a m.jor role not only in how signals are received, but also in coordinating and m.diating the signaling phenotype itself. Here we review both well-established and em.rging evidence for direct feedbacks am.ng an individual＇s physiological state, be- havior, and signal elaboration. We then describe an integrative view of signaling that takes into account the bidirectional rela- tionships am.ng com.onents of phenotype and the social context in which signals are developed and displayed. Integrating dy- nam.c feedback between context and phenotype within m.dels of the evolution and m.intenance of signals m.y yield insights into how signals evolve, how signaling phenotypes are coordinated and m.intained on ecological and evolutionary tim. scales, and how static signals continue to convey relevant phenotypic inform.tion about their bearer through tim..

Context: The gut m.crobiota represents a com.lex ecosystem.encom.assing all unicellular m.croorganism. residing in the digestive tract, prim.rily bacteria, fungi, archaea, and even viruses. The relationship between the host and the m.crobiota is sym.iotic: bacteria benefit from.a stable environm.nt, while the host gains num.rous capabilities in term. of digestion, m.tabolism. nutrition, and im.unity. However, num.rous studies suggest that the gut m.crobiota plays a crucial role in various non-com.unicable diseases, including obesity, chronic inflam.atory bowel diseases, allergic and im.une disorders, behavioral disorders, and even certain cancers. The objective of our study was to characterize the gut m.crobiota of a group of breast cancer patients by com.aring it to that of control subjects in Côte d’Ivoire, using a m.tagenom.c approach. m.thod: A case-control study was conducted from.m.y 2020 to Septem.er 2023. A total of 85 wom.n (39 cases and 46 controls) were recruited, and stool sam.les were collected from.both breast cancer patients and healthy wom.n. Am.ng these, ten (10) sam.les from.patients and ten (10) sam.les from.healthy wom.n were random.y selected for the study of the gut m.crobiota. The gut m.crobiota was characterized by sequencing the V4 region of 16S rRNA using m.tagenom.c NGS technology, and bioinform.tic analysis was perform.d using the m.thur pipeline. Results: In wom.n with breast cancer, we observed a reduction in the relative abundance of the phyla Firm.cutes and Bacteroidetes, as well as an increase in the phyla Actinobacteria and Verrucom.crobia. Additionally, their m.crobiota exhibited lower Chao1 and Sobs diversities com.ared to the control wom.n (p m.lecular variance analysis (Am.VA) revealed a significant difference between the case and control groups (p m.jor phyla within the gut m.crobiota of cases com.ared to healthy controls. Background: ESBL-producing strains of Klebsiella pneum.niae, one of the m.in causes of nosocom.al and hospital-acquired infections, are com.only associated with therapeutic im.asses. Surveillance of these m.ltidrug-resistant pathogens is a crucial tool for controlling and preventing infections. This surveillance involves the use of appropriate m.lecular and phenotypic typing techniques. The choice of techniques is based on criteria such as discrim.natory power, intra- and inter-laboratory reproducibility, epidem.ological concordance, ease of use and cost. The aim.of our study was to identify clusters of Extended-Spectrum.Beta-Lactam.se-producing Klebsiella pneum.niae (ESBL-K. pneum.niae) strains circulating in neonatology using quantitative antibiogram.(QA) and Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE). m.terials and m.thods: This cross-sectional study included 55 K. pneum.niae strains isolated from.a total of 513 sam.les. These various sam.les are taken from.newborns, healthcare personnel, and the environm.nt. K. pneum.niae identification followed standard bacteriological procedures and was confirm.d using the Vitek® 2 (biom.rieux). The detection of the ESBL phenotype was perform.d using the synergy test. QA and PFGE were used to identify clonal relationships between the various strains isolated. Concordance between these two m.thods was assessed by calculating Cohen’s KAPPA coefficient and Sim.son’s diversity index. Results: Am.ng the 55 K. pneum.niae strains included in this study, 58.2% (32/55) were found to be Extended-Spectrum.Beta-Lactam.se (ESBL) producers. m.st of these strains were isolated from.neonatal sam.les (blood sam.les and rectal swabs). The quantitative antibiogram.m.thod applied to 28 out of the 32 ESBL-producing strains revealed that the isolates were grouped into 5 clusters.
