Root-associated(rhizosphere and endosphere) microbiomes of the Miscanthus sinensis and their response to the heavy metal contamination

The plant root-associated microbiomes, including both the rhizosphere and the root endosphere microbial community, are considered as a critical extension of the plant genome. Comparing to the well-studied rhizosphere microbiome, the understanding of the root endophytic microbiome is still in its infancy. Miscanthus sinensis is a pioneering plant that could thrive on metal contaminated lands and holds the potential for phytoremediation applications. Characterizing its root-associated microbiome, especially the root endophytic microbiome, could provide pivotal knowledge for phytoremediation of mine tailings. In the current study, M. sinensis residing in two Pb/Zn tailings and one uncontaminated site were collected. The results demonstrated that the metal contaminant fractions exposed strong impacts on the microbial community structures. Their influences on the microbial community, however, gradually decreases from the bulk soil through the rhizosphere soil and finally to the endosphere, which resulting in distinct root endophytic microbial community structures compared to both the bulk and rhizosphere soil. Diverse members affiliated with the order Rhizobiales was identified as the core microbiome residing in the root of M. sinensis. In addition, enrichment of plant-growth promoting functions within the root endosphere were predicted, suggesting the root endophytes may provide critical services to the host plant. The current study provides new insights into taxonomy and potential functions of the root-associated microbiomes of the pioneer plant, M. sinensis, which may facilitate future phytoremediation practices.

Intraseasonal oscillation of the mixed layer and upper ocean temperature has been found to occur over the South China Sea(SCS)in the summer monsoon season based on the multiple reanalysis and observational data in this study.The method of composite analysis and an upper ocean temperature equation assisted the analysis of physical mechanisms.The results show that the mixed layer depth(MLD)in the SCS has a significant oscillation with a 30-60 d period over the SCS region,which is closely related to boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation(BSISO)activities.The MLD can increase(decrease)during the positive(negative)phase of the BSISO and usually lags behind by approximately one-eighth of the lifecycle(5 days)of the BSISO-related convection.The BSISO may cause periodic anomalies at the air-sea boundary,such as wind stress and heat flux,so it can play a dominant role in modulating the variation in MLD.There also are significant intraseasonal seawater temperature anomalies in both the surface and subsurface layers of the SCS.In addition,during the initial phase of the BSISO,the temperature anomaly signals of the thermocline are obviously opposite to the sea surface temperature(SST),especially in the southern SCS.According to the results from the analysis of the temperature equation,the vertical entrainment term caused by BSISO-related wind stress is stronger than the thermal forcing during the initial stage of convection,and it is more significant in the southern SCS.

Study on alkali mechanical activation for recovering rare earth from waste fluorescent lamps

Recycling of rare earth from waste fluorescent lamps is becoming increasingly important in future sustainable development. However, cerium and terbium are usually difficult to recover due to the stable spinel structure. In the research, alkali mechanical activation was innovatively used to pretreat the waste phosphors for recovering rare earths. The effect of alkali mechanical activation on the structural changes of waste phosphors was explored using X-ray diffraction （XRD） and Fourier transform infrared spec- troscopy （FFIR）. Meanwhile, the effects of different parameters including milling speed, activation time, and amount of alkali on the leaching rates of rare earth were investigated. The rare earth elements re- covery rates are observed to increase rapidly, particularly with increases in rotational speed and acti- vation time. Under optimal conditions, the maximum leaching rates of Ce and Tb reach 85.0% and 89.8%, respectively. And the total recovery rates of rare earth reach 95.2%. All the results indicate that alkali mechanical activation can effectively destroy the spinel structure and produce substantial physico- chemical changes. These changes lead to the easy dissolution of rare earths in acid solution, and greatly improve the leaching of cerium and terbium.

Global warming has become one of the major environmental problems facing mankind in the 21st century,The existing refrigeration technology of buildings,like air conditioning,consumes a lot of energy.Passive daytime radiative cooling technology works without consuming energy.nor emitting carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.This review summarizes the development of daytime passive radiative cooling technologyfrom the basic principles,structure and materials of radiative coolers;analyses and evaluates the various existing radiative coolers.The core of radiative cooling lies in the combination of multi-scale micro/nano structures.The cooler reflects sunlight thus preventing the building from being heated up;while allows the building toradiate its own heat out thus being cooled down;meanwhile maintains the temperature difference by the heat insulation effect ofthe porous structure in theflm.The common challenges and potential solutions for the commercialization of radiative cooling technologies are analyzed,which may promote the applications of the technology in the near future.

Structural deformation monitoring of flight vehicles based on optical fiber sensing(OFS)technology has been a focus of research in the field of aerospace.After nearly 30 years of research and development,Chinese and international researchers have made significant advances in the areas of theory and methods,technology and systems,and ground experiments and flight tests.These advances have led to the development of OFS technology from the laboratory research stage to the engineering application stage.However,a few problems encountered in practical applications limit the wider application and further development of this technology,and thus urgently require solutions.This paper reviews the history of research on the deformation monitoring of flight vehicles.It examines various aspects of OFS-based deformation monitoring including the main varieties of OFS technology,technical advantages and disadvantages,suitability in aerospace applications,deformation reconstruction algorithms,and typical applications.This paper points out the key unresolved problems and the main evolution paradigms of engineering applications.It further discusses future development directions from the perspectives of an evolution paradigm,standardization,new materials,intelligentization,and collaboration.

Afro- American Women were once a social minority and the weaker gender in American society. Through the endeavor of a group of Afro- American women writers,they have achieved a great success for the cultural identity by concluding their own social experience into works in recent decades. This paper reviews the cultural identity built by Afro- American black women writers and introduces its historical reasons,works,and historical significance. By doing this,we stand to gain insights into the American women writers and find their great contributions to their cultural identity in American culture.

Performance analysis and optimization of free cooling strategies for a liquid-cooled data center

The increasing power density of IT electronics and the enormous energy consumption of data centers lead to the urgent demand for efficient cooling technology.Due to its efficiency and safety,liquid-cooled heat sink technology may gradually replace air-cooled technology over time.With the ambient or higher water supply temperature,the liquid-cooled technology shortens the operating time of the chiller and improves its coefficient of performance,while the pump power consumption may increase for satisfying the constant cooling capacity.Therefore,it is significant to study the optimal water supply temperature to achieve energy-efficient operation of data centers.A virtual 30.1 kW data center is considered as the case,the liquid-cooled system is constructed with a combination of innovative manifold microchannel heat sink with oblique fins and indirect evaporative cooling technology to minimize energy consumption.A hybrid thermal management model integrating the heat dissipation model and the power consumption model is established by TRNSYS and FLUENT software.To the highest chip-safe operating temperature premise,the energy performance is analyzed under various water supply temperatures in Guangzhou.The result shows that only 21.5-hour mechanical cooling is needed with the 30℃server inlet temperature throughout the year.And the minimized power consumption occurs with the constant 29℃server inlet temperature.Moreover,the temperature adaptive control strategy(TACS)is adopted to test the cooling system power consumption under different regulation frequencies,and the by-week TACS can achieve another 11.5%energy saving than the minimum power consumption of the constant temperature control strategy.

Hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite with radial mesopores:Preparation,formation mechanism and application for benzene alkylation

Hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite with radial mesopores is controllably synthesized using piperidine in a NaOH solution.The piperidine molecules enter the zeolite micropores and protect the zeolite framework from extensive desilication.The areas containing fewer aluminum atoms contain fewer piperidine protectant molecules and so they dissolve first.Small amounts of mesopores are then gradually generated in areas with more aluminum atoms and more piperidine protectant.In this manner,radial mesopores are formed in the ZSM-5 zeolite with a maximal preservation of the micropores and active sites.The optimal hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite,prepared with a molar ratio of piperidine to zeolite of 0.03,had a mesopore surface area of 136 m·g and a solid yield of 80%.The incorporation of the radial mesopores results in micropores that are interconnected which shortened the average diffusion path length.Compared to the parent zeolite,the hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite possesses more accessible acid sites and has a higher catalytic activity and a longer lifetime for the alkylation of benzene.

Effects of Cd on reductive transformation of lepidocrocite by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1

We investigated the reduction of lepidocrocite(γ-FeOOH) by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 in the presence and absence of Cd. The results showed that Cd^(2+) retarded microbial reduction of γ-Fe OOH and avoided formation of magnetite. The inhibitory effect on γ-Fe OOH transformation may not result from Cd^(2+) toxicity to the bacterium; it rather was probably due to competitive adsorption between Cd^(2+) and Fe^(2+) on γ-Fe OOH as its surface reduction catalyzed by adsorbed Fe^(2+) was eliminated by adsorption of Cd^(2+).
