Two woody plants, Platycladus orientalise (tolerant to drought) and Acacia auriculi-formis (sensitive to drought), have been subjected to rapid and slow soil drying. ABA levels in their roots and xylem sap have been determined using radioimmunoassay (RIA, sensitivity is 0.4 pmol per assay vial) with a monoclonal antibody against ( + )-ABA. Iron hexacyanoferrate(FeHCF)is a promising cathode material for sodium-ion ***,FeHCF always suffers from a poor cycling stability,which is closely related to the abundant vacancy defects in its ***,post-synthetic and in-situ vacancy repairing strategies are proposed for the synthesis of highquality FeHCF in a highly concentrated Na_(4)Fe(CN)_(6) *** the post-synthetic and in-situ vacancy repaired FeHCF products(FeHCF-P and FeHCF-I)show the significant decrease in the number of vacancy defects and the reinforced structure,which can suppress the side reactions and activate the capacity from low-spin Fe in *** particular,FeHCF-P delivers a reversible discharge capacity of 131 mAh g^(−1) at 1 C and remains 109 mAh g^(−1) after 500 cycles,with a capacity retention of 83%.FeHCF-I can deliver a high discharge capacity of 158.5 mAh g^(−1) at 1 *** at 10 C,the FeHCF-I electrode still maintains a discharge specific capacity of 103 mAh g^(−1) and retains 75% after 800 *** work provides a new vacancy repairing strategy for the solution synthesis of high-quality FeHCF.

We systematically test the performance of several Monte Carlo update schemes for the(2+1)d XY phase transition of quantum rotor *** comparing the local Metropolis(LM),LM plus over-relaxation(OR),Wolff-cluster(WC),hybrid Monte Carlo(HM),hybrid Monte Carlo with Fourier acceleration(FA)schemes,it is clear that among the five different update schemes,at the quantum critical point,the WC and FA schemes acquire the smallest autocorrelation time and cost the least amount of CPU hours in achieving the same level of relative error,and FA enjoys a further advantage of easily implementable for more complicated interactions such as the long-range *** results bestow one with the necessary knowledge of extending the quantum rotor model,which plays the role of ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic critical bosons or Z_(2)topological order,to more realistic and yet challenging models such as Fermi surface Yukawa-coupled to quantum rotor models.

We previously reported that v-Fos transformation effector (Fte-1) is a novel CD2 binding protein identified by yeast two hybrid system. In the present study, we further characterize the molecular properties and biological activity of the Fte-1. In vitro interaction analysis by an IAsys Resonant Mirror Bio- sensor further demonstrated that Fte-1 interacts with CD2 specifically, and the dissociation constant (Kd) of Fte-1-CD2 is 10?7 mol. The molecular section analysis showed that protein kinase C (PKC) phos- phorylation site at Ser238 of Fte-1, as confirmed by in vitro phosphorylation, is essential for the specific in- teraction with CD2. Jurkat T cells transfected with expression vector encoding for EGFP-Fte-1 fusion protein showed that Fte-1 displays a clustering dis- tribution in the cells. Upon stimulation by CD2 mono- clonal antibody T11, Fte-1 lost the character of clus- tering distribution and translocation to the plasma membrane, which were disrupted by mutation of Fte-1 (Ser238Gly), suggesting that Fte-1 could be co-localized with CD2 on the membrane, and Fte-1 phosphorylation at Ser238 is a crucial factor in CD2-mediated interaction with Fte-1. Suppression of Fte-1 expression by small interference RNA (siRNA) diminished the susceptibility of Jurkat T cells to apoptosis triggered by phorbol 12-myristate 13-ace- tate (PMA) and ionomycin, indicating that the bio- logical function of Fte-1 may be involved in the regu- lation of activation and apoptosis of T cells. These results provide further evidence that Fte-1 is a novel binding protein of CD2, and may function as a down- stream molecule in the CD2-mediated events.

High-gain harmonic generation(HGHG) is effective to produce fully coherent free-electron laser(FEL) pulses for various scientific applications. Due to the limitation of seed lasers, HGHG typically operates at a low repetition *** this paper, a harmonic-enhanced HGHG scheme is proposed to relax the peak power requirement for the seed laser,which can therefore operate at megahertz and a higher repetition rate. Moreover, the setup of the scheme is compact and can be adopted in an existing single-stage HGHG facility to extend the shortest achievable wavelength. Simulations show that FEL emission at 13.5 nm(20th harmonic) can be obtained with a 270 nm, 1 MW(peak power) seed laser.

Calibration-free(CF)laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS)is normally only applicable for gated detectors due to its dependence on the assumption of a steady-state ***,most currently available LIBS systems are equipped with non-gated detectors such as chargecoupled device(CCD),which degrades the accuracy of CF *** this paper,the reason for the less satisfactory quantification performance of CF for LIBS with non-gated detectors was clarified and a time-integration calibration-free(TICF)model was proposed for applications with non-gated *** was based on an assumed temporal profile of plasma properties,including temperature and electron density,obtained from another *** line intensity at different time during the signal collection time window was estimated with self-absorption correction according to the temporal profile of the plasma *** proposed model was validated on titanium alloys and compared with traditional *** accuracy of elemental concentration measurement was improved significantly:the average relative error of aluminum and vanadium decreased from 6.07%and 22.34%to 2.01%and 1.92%,*** quantification results showed that TICF method was able to extend the applicability of CF to LIBS with non-gated detectors.

For a graph G, let be the chromatic number of G. It is well-known that holds for any graph G with clique number . For a hereditary graph class , whether there exists a function f such that holds for every has been widely studied. Moreover, the form of minimum such an f is also concerned. A result of Schiermeyer shows that every -free graph G with clique number has . Chudnovsky and Sivaraman proved that every -free with clique number graph is -colorable. In this paper, for any -free graph G with clique number , we prove that . The main methods in the proof are set partition and induction.

BACKGROUND： Alpha-tocopherol （ α-tocopherol） can effectively relieve neuronal damage induced by oxygen-centered free radicals. However, the effective dose remains controversial. OBJECTIVE： To evaluate the protective effects of low-concentration α-tocopherol on neuronal membranes. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： Contrast observation and in vitro study, performed at Laboratory of Neurosurgery, Tianjin Huanhu Hospital between April and September 2006. MATERIALS： Fetal cortical neurons were derived from two 14-day pregnant SD rats, and α-tocopherol was provided by Sigma, USA. METHODS： The neurons were randomly assigned to six groups：（1） normal： neurons were cultured under normal conditions; （2） oxidative damage： oxidative free radicals was damaged using the Fenton reaction; （3） α-tocopherol： neurons were cultured in different concentrations of -tocopherol 10, 20, 40, and 80 mg/L for 2 hours, respectively. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Neuronal membrane damage was observed using a confocal laser microscope, and malonaldehyde production was detected using the thiobarbituric acid method. RESULTS： At normal, biological concentrations （10 mg/L）, α-tocopherol induced no change in the damaged neurons （P 〉 0.05）. However, at a concentration of 80 mg/L, the number of damaged neurons was significantly reduced, compared with the damage group （P 〈 0.05）. Malonaldehyde levels following 80 mg/L α-tocopherol treatment were less than the oxygen free radical damage group （P 〈 0.05）, but greater than the control group （P 〈 0.01）. CONCLUSION： A concentration of 80 mg/L α-tocopherol can effectively protect the neuronal cell membrane from oxidative damage

Aims Understanding the drivers for leaf traits is critical to improving our predictions on ecosystems'responses to global *** patterns of leaf traits are shaped by phylogenetic,biological and environmental factors ***,till now few studies have examined how these factors influenced leaf traits together,and how their effects differed at the within-and among-site *** We sampled leaf traits from a 1100 km shrub-biome transect across central Inner-Mongolia,including leaf mass per area(LMA),mass-based photosynthetic rate,nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)*** examined the effects of phylogenetic,biological(height and growth rate)and environmental(climate and soil)fac-tors on leaf traits with mixed-model analyses of *** partitioning method was used to separate the joint and independent effects of these three types of *** Findings(i)Climate and soil fertility(total or available nutrient concentra-tions)together explained 11.4-41.4%of among-site variations,with remarkable difference among traits.(i)Height and height growth rate together explained 0.4--31.9%of trait variations(mostly among-site variations).Our results could only weakly support the ability of leaf traits as predictors for whole-plant growth.(ii)LMA was negatively related to height,which was consistent with the resource-use strategy hypothesis but incon-sistent with the hypotheses proposed for coexisting trees,suggest-ing that the LMA--height relationship is shaped by rather different mechanisms between the within-and among-communities lev-els.(iv)The variation partitioning analysis showed that,the rela-tionships between leaf traits and biological characters largely reflected the differences in both leaf traits and biological char-acters among species that occupying different *** relative importance of phylogenetic,biological and environmental fac-tors differed remarkably among leaf traits,between the within-and among-communi
