Single-port laparoscopy-assisted vaginal repair of a cesarean scar defect: a single-center retrospective study

Background:The incidence of uterine cesarean scar defect(niche)is high,and some patients require surgery.Single-port laparoscopy can reduce post-operative pain,and provide better cosmetic effects.This study was performed to evaluate the safety and superiority of single-port laparoscopy-assisted vaginal repair of uterine cesarean scar defect(niche)in women after cesarean section.Methods:This study included 74 patients who were diagnosed with uterine cesarean niche at the Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital from January 2013 to June 2015.Thirty-seven patients underwent single-port laparoscopy-assisted vaginal surgery as the case group,and the remaining patients underwent vaginal repair surgery as the control group.We collected data from the inpatient and follow-up medical records.The clinical characteristics of these two groups were compared.The odds ratios and 95%confidential intervals were calculated for each variable by univariate and multivariate analyses.Results:Patients who underwent single-port laparoscopy-assisted vaginal repair had a significantly longer operation time(2.3[2.0-2.7]vs.2.0[1.6-2.3]h,P=0.015),shorter gas passage time(1.2[1.0-1.5]vs.1.7[1.0-2.0]days,P=0.012),shorter hospital stay(3.1[3.0-4.0]vs.4.5[4.0-6.0]days,P=0.019),and fewer complications(0 vs.4 cases).Univariate analysis showed that depth of the niche(P=0.021)the mild adhesiolysis score(P=0.035)and moderate adhesiolysis score(P=0.013)were associated with the bladder injury.Multivariate analysis showed that the moderate adhesiolysis score(P=0.029;95%confidence interval,1.318-3.526)was the strongest independent predictor of bladder injury.Conclusion:This study confirmed the safety and superiority of single-port laparoscopy-assisted vaginal repair of uterine cesarean scars.

ELECTROCHEMICAL POLYMERIZATION OF 5-CYANOINDOLE IN MIXED ELECTROLYTES OF BORON TRIFLUORIDE DIETHYL ETHERATE AND DIETHYL ETHER

High quality poly（5-cyanoindole）（P5CI） films were electrosynthesized by direct anodic oxidation of 5-cyanoindole on stainless steel sheet in the mixed electrolytes of boron trifluoride diethyl etherate （BFEE） and diethyl ether （EE）（by volume 1：1）＋ 0,05 mol L^-1 Bu4NBF4. The film formed can be peeled off the electrode into freestanding films, The addition of EE into BFEE can improve the solubility of monomer. P5CI films obtained from this medium showed excellent electrochemical behavior with conductivity of 10^-2 S cm^-1, Structural studies showed that the polymerization of 5-cyanoindole occurred at the 2,3 position. As-formed P5CI films were thoroughly soluble in strong polar organic solvent dimethyl sulfoxide （DMSO） while partly soluble in tetrahydrofuran （THF） or acetone. Fluorescence spectral studies indicated that P5CI was a good blue-ight emitter.

Flexible Electrochromic Poly(thiophene-furan) Film via Electrodeposition with High Stability

Flexible electrochromic(EC) materials have an urgent demand in the current electronic equipment market due to their technological interest and applications. However, at present, few flexible EC devices developed by industry exist due to some problems and challenges still to be solved such as flexibility. In this work, we have successfully synthesized a novel thiophene-furan(TFu) monomer via Stille coupling reaction,and facilely electrochemically polymerized in a neutral Bu_4 NPF_6-CH_2Cl2 electrolyte system to afford the corresponding poly(thiophene-furan)(PTFu) polymer film with good flexibility. The electrochemical and photoelectrochemical analyses of the as-prepared PTFu demonstrate that it has achieved the improved EC performance compared with pure polyfuran and polythiophene polymers, and as a result it possesses favorable EC parameters manifested as a reasonable ΔT(32.1%), faster response(1.38 s), excellent coloration efficiency(CE, 300.9 cm^(2)·C^(-1)), and after a continuous redox process up to 2000 s, its optical stability can be maintained at 96%, and even after 3000 s, it can still be maintained at 80%. In addition, the successful assembly of the electrochromic device of PTFu film can easily realize the reversible conversion of the color from orange to gray. All these systematic studies suggest that the as-prepared flexible PTFu film is a promising candidate for EC materials and has great potential interest for versatile EC applications.

From Liquid to Solid‑State Lithium Metal Batteries:Fundamental Issues and Recent Developments

The widespread adoption of lithium-ion batteries has been driven by the proliferation of portable electronic devices and electric vehicles,which have increasingly stringent energy density requirements.Lithium metal batteries(LMBs),with their ultralow reduction potential and high theoretical capacity,are widely regarded as the most promising technical pathway for achieving high energy density batteries.In this review,we provide a comprehensive overview of fundamental issues related to high reactivity and migrated interfaces in LMBs.Furthermore,we propose improved strategies involving interface engineering,3D current collector design,electrolyte optimization,separator modification,application of alloyed anodes,and external field regulation to address these challenges.The utilization of solid-state electrolytes can significantly enhance the safety of LMBs and represents the only viable approach for advancing them.This review also encompasses the variation in fundamental issues and design strategies for the transition from liquid to solid electrolytes.Particularly noteworthy is that the introduction of SSEs will exacerbate differences in electrochemical and mechanical properties at the interface,leading to increased interface inhomogeneity—a critical factor contributing to failure in all-solidstate lithium metal batteries.Based on recent research works,this perspective highlights the current status of research on developing high-performance LMBs.

The cluster digging behavior of larvae confers trophic benefits to fitness in insects

Collective behaviors efficiently impart benefits to a diversity of species ranging from bacteria to humans.Fly larvae tend to cluster and form coordinated digging groups under crowded conditions,yet understanding the rules governing this behavior is in its infancy.We primarily took advantage of the Drosophila model to investigate cooperative foraging behavior.Here,we report that Drosophila-related species and the black soldier fly have evolved a conserved strategy of cluster digging in food foraging.Subsequently,we investigated relative factors,including larval stage,population density,and food stiffness and quality,that affect the cluster digging behavior.Remarkably,oxygen supply through the posterior breathing spiracles is necessary for the organization of digging clusters.More importantly,we theoretically devise a mathematical model to accurately calculate how the cluster digging behavior expands food resources by diving depth,cross-section area,and food volume.We found that cluster digging behavior approximately increases 2.2 fold depth,1.7-fold cross-section area,and 1.9 fold volume than control groups,respectively.Amplification of food sources significantly facilitates survival,larval development,and reproductive success of Drosophila challenged with competition for limited food resources,thereby conferring trophic benefits to fitness in insects.Overall,our findings highlight that the cluster digging behavior is a pivotal behavior for their adaptation to food scarcity,advancing a better understanding of how this cooperative behavior confers fitness benefits in the animal kingdom.

Recent advances in electrocatalytic generation of indole-derived radical cations and their applications in organic synthesis

Indole-derived radical cations, open-shell reactive species, display distinctive dual reactivity due to the carbon-centered radical and more electrophilic carbocation, which frequently appear in a variety of single electron oxidation reactions for synthesizing structurally diverse functionalized indoles and indolines. Electrocatalysis is considered as a synthetically attractive and environmentally friendly alternative for driving the single electron oxidation of indoles. Remarkable achievements in electrocatalytic indolederived radical cation-mediated indole functionalization have been realized so far. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent progresses in the applications of electrocatalytic indole radical cations,including C(sp~2)–H functionalization, dearomative 2,3-difunctionalization, and ring-opening reaction, emphasizing the vital single electron oxidation steps of indoles, the substrates scope and limitations, and the reaction mechanisms.

BACKGROUND Colorectal surgeons are well aware that performing surgery for rectal cancer becomes more challenging in obese patients with narrow and deep pelvic cavities.Therefore,it is essential for colorectal surgeons to have a comprehensive understanding of pelvic structure prior to surgery and anticipate potential surgical difficulties.AIM To evaluate predictive parameters for technical challenges encountered during laparoscopic radical sphincter-preserving surgery for rectal cancer.METHODS We retrospectively gathered data from 162 consecutive patients who underwent laparoscopic radical sphincterpreserving surgery for rectal cancer.Three-dimensional reconstruction of pelvic bone and soft tissue parameters was conducted using computed tomography(CT)scans.Operative difficulty was categorized as either high or low,and multivariate logistic regression analysis was employed to identify predictors of operative difficulty,ultimately creating a nomogram.RESULTS Out of 162 patients,21(13.0%)were classified in the high surgical difficulty group,while 141(87.0%)were in the low surgical difficulty group.Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the surgical approach using laparoscopic intersphincteric dissection,intraoperative preventive ostomy,and the sacrococcygeal distance were independent risk factors for highly difficult laparoscopic radical sphincter-sparing surgery for rectal cancer(P<0.05).Conversely,the anterior-posterior diameter of pelvic inlet/sacrococcygeal distance was identified as a protective factor(P<0.05).A nomogram was subsequently constructed,demonstrating good predictive accuracy(C-index=0.834).CONCLUSION The surgical approach,intraoperative preventive ostomy,the sacrococcygeal distance,and the anterior-posterior diameter of pelvic inlet/sacrococcygeal distance could help to predict the difficulty of laparoscopic radical sphincter-preserving surgery.

Recent Advances in Pd-Catalyzed Reactions Involving the “On-Water” Mechanism

As the chemical industry grapples with the need for more eco-friendly practices,the use of water as a reaction medium is gaining attraction in organic transformations.This mini-review delves into Pd-catalyzed reactions that utilize the "on-water" mechanism,spanning from 2019 to late 2023.These reactions are neatly categorized into several types: (A) Catalytic C—H activations,(B) Mizoroki- Heck-type reactions,(C) Suzuki-Miyaura reactions,and (D) Cyclization reactions.By showcasing the potential of water as a sustainable reaction medium for organic transformations,these reactions leave no doubt about the importance of embracing eco-friendly practices in the chemical industry.Key Scientists In 1980,a seminal work by Breslow et al.showed an acceleration of reaction rate in the Diels-Alder reaction.Sharpless and co-workers noted a significant increase in the rate of the [2σ+2σ+2π] cycloaddition of quadricyclane and dimethyl azodicarboxylate (DMAD) when the reaction was conducted in water,as opposed to when it was carried out in organic solvents.The term "on-water" was then coined to describe this phenomenon.This strategy was further expanded to transition-metal catalyzed transformations by Ackermann in 2011.Later,Varma and Leazer disclosed a Pd-catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck type arylation of alkenes with diaryliodonium salts “on-water”.The enantioselective version of "on-water" process was not realized until 2014 by the zhou group.Later on,the Schaub group described a Pd-catalyzed Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reaction of electron-poor aryl chlorides with water,using only 50 ppm of catalyst loading.Very recently,Liu and Lin extended the "on-water" strategy to Pd-catalyzed double Mizoroki-Heck reactions.This mini-review has focused on Pd-catalyzed reactions involving the “on-water” mechanism.

Fast-Response Fiber-Optic FPI Temperature Sensing System Based on Modulated Grating Y-Branch Tunable Laser

In this paper,a cost-effective and miniaturized instrument is proposed,which is based on a tunable modulated grating Y-branch(MG-Y)laser for rapid temperature measurement using a Fabry-Perot interferometer(FPI)sensor.The FPI sensor with a 1463-μm cavity length is a short segment of a capillary tube sandwiched by two sections of single-mode fibers(SMFs).This system has a broad tunable range(1527 nm-1567 nm)with a wavelength interval of 8 pm and a tuning rate of 100 Hz.Temperature sensing experiments are carried out to investigate the performance of the system by demodulating the absolute cavity length of the FPI sensor using a cross-correlation algorithm.Experimental results show that the sensor can reach the response time as short as 94 ms with the sensitivity of 802 pm/C.Benefiting from the homemade and integrated essential electrical circuits,the entire system has the small size,low cost,and practical application potential to be used in the harsh environment for rapid temperature measurement.

Experimental study on shock interaction control of double wedge in high-enthalpy hypersonic flow subject to plasma synthetic jet

The hypersonic shock-shock interaction flow field at double-wedge geometries controlled by plasma synthetic jet actuator is experimentally studied in a Ma = 8 high-enthalpy shock tunnel with the purpose of exploring a novel technique for reducing surface heat flux in a real flight environment. The results demonstrate that increasing the discharge energy is advantageous in eliminating the shock wave, shifting the shock wave interaction point, and shortening the control response time. The oblique shock wave can be completely removed when the actuator's discharge energy grows from 0.4 J to 11.5 J, and the displacement of the shock wave interaction point increases by 124.56%, while the controlled response time is shortened by 30 μs. Besides, the reduction in diameter of the jet exit is firstly proved to have a negative impact on energy deposition in a working environment with incoming flow, which reduces the discharge energy and hence decreases the control effect. The shock wave control response time lengthens when the jet exits away from the second wedge. Along with comparing the change in wall heat flux at the second wedge over time, the control effect of plasma synthetic jet actuator with and without inflation is also analyzed. When plasma synthetic jet works in inflatable mode, both the ability to eliminate shock waves and the shifting effect of the shock wave interaction point are increased significantly, and the wall heat flux is also reduced.
