Many machine learning problems can be formulated as minimizing the sum of a function and a non-smooth regularization term.Proximal stochastic gradient methods are popular for solving such composite optimization problems.We propose a minibatch proximal stochastic recursive gradient algorithm SRG-DBB,which incorporates the diagonal Barzilai–Borwein(DBB)stepsize strategy to capture the local geometry of the problem.The linear convergence and complexity of SRG-DBB are analyzed for strongly convex functions.We further establish the linear convergence of SRGDBB under the non-strong convexity condition.Moreover,it is proved that SRG-DBB converges sublinearly in the convex case.Numerical experiments on standard data sets indicate that the performance of SRG-DBB is better than or comparable to the proximal stochastic recursive gradient algorithm with best-tuned scalar stepsizes or BB stepsizes.Furthermore,SRG-DBB is superior to some advanced mini-batch proximal stochastic gradient methods.

We evaluated the relationships of body composition and serum adipocytokine levels with progression-free survival(PFS)and overall survival(OS)in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer(mCRPC)patients receiving docetaxel.The medical records of mCRPC patients who received docetaxel between January 2011 and December 2015 at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center(Shanghai,China)were reviewed.The following body composition parameters were calculated using computed tomography:skeletal muscle index(SMI),visceral adipose tissue index(VATI),and subcutaneous adipose tissue index(SATI).Pretreatment serum adipocytokine levels,including interleukin 6,insulin,leptin,monocyte chemoattractant protein-1,adiponectin,and resistin,were measured using the multiplex bead-based immunoassays.Cox regression and Kaplan–Meier methods were used for survival analyses.Of the 453 mCRPC patients initially identified,105 were included in the analysis.High VATI group patients had longer PFS(median,10 months vs 7 months,P=0.008)and OS(median,24 months vs 15 months,P=0.017),compared with low VATI group patients.SMI and SATI were not significantly associated with PFS or OS.Of the six detected adipocytokines,only leptin was associated with mCRPC prognosis.High leptin group patients had shorter PFS(median,7 months vs 12 months,P=0.0018)and OS(median,17 months vs 22 months,P=0.042),compared with low leptin group patients.Multivariate analysis showed that a high VATI was an independent protective factor for PFS and OS,while a high leptin level was an independent risk factor for PFS and OS.Therefore,VATI and serum leptin levels could provide important information concerning mCRPC prognosis.

Traditional rigid-body in-pipe robots usually have complex and heavy structures with limited flexibility and adaptability.Although soft in-pipe robots have great improvements in flexibility,they still have manufacturing difficulties due to their reliance on high-performance soft materials.Tensegrity structure is a kind of self-stressed spatial structure consisting discrete rigid struts connected by a continuous net of tensional flexible strings,which combines the advantages of both rigid structures and soft structures.By applying tensegrity structures into robotics,this paper proposes a novel worm-like tensegrity robot for moving inside pipes.First,a robot module capable of body deformation is designed based on the concept of tensegrity and its deformation performance is analyzed.Then,the optimal parameters of the module are obtained based on the tensegrity form-finding.The deformation ability of the tensegrity module is tested experimentally.Finally,the worm-like tensegrity robot that can crawl inside pipes is developed by connecting three modules in series.Motion performance and load capacity are tested on the prototype of the worm-like tensegrity robot by experiments of moving in horizontal pipe,vertical pipe,and elbow pipe.Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design and suggest that the robot has high compliance,mobility,and adaptability although with simple structure and low cost.

Alkylphenols （APs）, the breakdown products of alkylphenol polyethoxylates that are widely used as surfactants, have been proven to exert estrogenic effects. With industrial development, higher concentrations of APs are discharged into aquatic environments. Nonylphenol （NP）, the most noxious AP, is included in the blacklist of several countries. The toxicity of NP to the alga Cyclotella caspia and the biodegradation of NP by C. caspia were studied in the laboratory. The median effective concentration at 96 hr （96 hr EC50 ） of NP for C. caspia was found to be 0.18 mg/L. Five toxicity and three degradation indices were selected for toxicity and biodegradation experiments, respectively, in five or three concentrations of NP set by the 96 hr EC50 of NP. The algal growth rate and chlorophyll a contents decreased as NP concentration increased. The main manifestations of morphological deformity of the cells included volume expansion and the presence of cytoplasmic inclusions （lipid droplets）. The abnormality rate of the cells increased with NP concentration and time, and was 100% at 0.22 and 0.26 mg/L of NP after 192 hr of culture. Superoxide dismutase activity initially increased and then declined at a higher NP toxicity of greater than 0.18 mg/L. After 192 hr of culture, the biodegradation rates of NP by C. caspia with initial concentrations of 0.14, 0.18, and 0.22 mg/L were 37.7%, 31.7%, and 6.5%, respectively. The kinetic equation of C. caspia biodegradation on NP was correlated with algal growth rate and initial NP concentration.

Objective: To explore the regulatory mechanism of competitive endogenous RNAs(ce RNA) in gastric cancer(GC) and to predict the prognosis of GC. Materials and Methods: Expression profiles of long noncoding RNAs(lnc RNAs), micro RNAs(mi RNAs), and m RNAs were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas platform. Differentially expressed RNAs(DERNAs) were screened to construct a lnc RNA-mi RNA-m RNA ce RNA network. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses were performed on the ce RNA network-related differentially expressed m RNAs(DEm RNAs). Next, the DERNAs were subjected to Cox regression and survival analyses to identify crucial prognostic factors for patients with GC. Results: We detected 1029 differentially expressed lnc RNAs, 104 differentially expressed mi RNAs, and 1659 DEm RNAs in patients with GC. Next, we performed bioinformatic analysis to construct the lnc RNA-mi RNA-m RNA ce RNA network, which included 10 mi RNAs, 65 lnc RNAs, and 10 m RNAs. Subsequently, Kaplan Meier(K-M) analysis showed that the survival rate of the high-risk group was significantly lower than that of the low-risk group, and the area under the curve value of the receiver operating characteristic curve revealed that the polygenic model had good predictive ability. The results indicated that ADAMTS9-AS1, ATAD2, and CADM2 might be potential therapeutic targets and prognostic biomarkers for GC. Conclusions: Our study has implications for predicting prognosis and monitoring surveillance of GC and provides a new theoretical and experimental basis for the clinical prognosis of GC.

AIM:To investigate the role of the-347G→GA polymorphism in the progression of colorectal cancer(CRC) .METHODS:We designed a case-control study based on a population of CRC patients in China and normal healthy controls with no history of tumors or inherited diseases.Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism(PCR-RFLP) analyses were used to genotype the variants,and immunohistochemical staining was performed to measure the expression of E-cadherin in different allele cases among the CRC patients and normal controls.RESULTS:The GA-allele(G/GA heterozygous and GA/GA homozygous) did not increase the risk of CRC compared with the G-allele(OR = 1.232,95% CI = 0.898-1.691) .However,the frequencies of the GAallele were higher in poorly differentiated(P = 0.002) and proximal(P = 0.019) CRC patients than in normal controls.We also observed that E-cadherin expression was lower in poorly differentiated CRC patients than in well differentiated CRC patients(P = 0.001) .Furthermore,E-cadherin expression was lower for the GA-allele than for the G-allele(G/G heterozygous) in CRC patients(P = 0.018) .In contrast,there was no significant difference in E-cadherin expression for the G-allele and GA-allele in normal controls(P = 0.292) .CONCLUSION:The-347G→GA promoter polymorphism in E-cadherin gene is associated with specific CRC features,and may be a prognostic factor rather than a susceptibility factor during the progression of CRC.

Smart strategies that can decrease the side effect and enhance the therapeutic efficacy of chemotherapy are in urgent need to meet the special demands of cance r therapy.Herein,two wate r-soluble macrocyclic hosts,i.e.,a carboxylated leaning tower[6]arene(CLT6) and a carboxylated [2]biphenyl-extended pillar[6]arene(CBpP6),are used to load chemotherapy drug oxaliplatin(OxPt) by forming inclusion complexes(OxPtСCLT6 and OxPtСCBpP6) through host-guest interactions.Interestingly,OxPt can be released from the macrocyclic cavities of these drug delivery systems(DDSs) via the competitive binding effect of spermine(SPM) because of the stronger binding abilities of CLT6/CBpP6 toward SPM as compared with OxPt,leading to enhanced cytotoxicity on SPM-overexpressed cancer cells,such as breast cancer MCF-7 cells.Moreover,compared to free OxPt,due to the low concentration of SPM in normal cells,OxPtСCGT6 and OxPtСCBpP6 demonstrated a decreased cytotoxicity on liver L02 cells,which is beneficial fo r reducing the side effect of anticancer drug during chemotherapy.Such a strategy might be extended to other antitumor drugs and water-soluble macrocycles with suitable cavity sizes to achieve controllable drug delivery and enhanced anticancer ability in supramolecular chemotherapy.

Revisiting pulsar velocities using Gaia Data Release 2

Precise measurements of neutron star(NS)velocities provide critical clues in regard to the supernova physics and evolution of binary systems.Based on Gaia Data Release 2(DR2),we selected a sample of 24 young(<3 Myr)pulsars with precise parallax measurements and measured the velocity of their local standard of rest(LSR)and the velocity dispersion among their respective local stellar groups.The median velocity difference between thus calculated LSRs and the Galactic rotation model is~7.6 km s^(-1),small compared to the typical velocity dispersion of~27.5 km s^(-1).For pulsars off the Galactic plane,such differences grow significantly to as large as~40 km s^(-1).More importantly,the velocity dispersion of stars in the local group of low-velocity pulsars can be comparable to their transverse velocities,suggesting that the intrinsic velocities of NS progenitors should be taken into account when we consider their natal kicks and binary evolution.We also examined the double NS system J0737-3039 A/B,and measured its transverse velocity to be 26-13+18 km s^(-1)assuming nearby Gaia sources are representative of their birth environment.This work demonstrated the feasibility and importance of using Gaia data to study the velocity of individual systems and velocity distribution of NSs.
