A C-type lectin with dual carbohydrate recognition domains functions in innate immune response in Asian corn borer,Ostrinia furnacalis

C-type lectins(CTLs)act as pattern recognition receptors(PRRs)to initiate the innate immune response in insects.A CTL with dual carbohydrate recognition domains(CRDs)(named immulectin-4[IML-4])was selected from the Ostrinia furnacalis transcriptome dataset for functional *** cloned the full-length complementary DNA of *** IML-4(OfIML-4).It encodes a 328-residue protein with a Glu-Pro-Asn(EPN)and Gln-Pro-Asp(QPD)motifs in 2 CRDs,***-4 messenger RNA levels increased significantly upon the bacterial and fungal *** OfIML-4(rIML-4)and its individual CRDs(rCRD1 and rCRD2)exhibited the binding ability to various microorganisms including Escherichia coli,Micrococcus luteus,Pichia pastoris,and Beauveria bassiana,and the cell wall components including lipopolysaccharide from ***,peptidoglycan from *** or Bacillus subtilis,and curdlan from Alcaligenes *** binding further induced the agglutination of ***,***,and *** in the presence of calcium,the phagocytosis of Staphylococcus aureus by the hemocytes,in vitro encapsulation and melanization of nickel-nitrilotriacetic acid beads,and a significant increase in phenoloxidase activity of *** addition,rIML-4 significantly enhanced the phagocytosis,nodulation,and resistance of *** to *** together,our results suggest that OfIML-4 potentially works as a PRR to recognize the invading microorganisms,and functions in the innate immune response in ***.

Introduction Surgery remains the mainstay treatment for localized esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC).In recent years,three-incision McKeown esophagectomy has been widely applied for operable ESCC considering its superiority in acquiring extensive lymphadenectomy and long-termsurvival[1].Cervical anastomotic fistula is one of the most dreaded complications in patients undergoing three-incision esophagectomy;it occurs in almost 10%–25%of patients and is responsible for almost 40%of post-operative deaths[2,3].Most surgeons prefer conservative approaches including perianastomotic drainage,total parenteral nutrition,nasogastric decompression,and the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics for cervical anastomotic fistula[4,5].However,the recovery period under this method is commonly long and *** now,the optimal treatment for cervical anastomotic fistula has not yet been *** this study,we describe a flushingdrainage system under negative pressure conditions to treat cervical anastomotic fistula,named anastomotic vacuum-assisted closure(AVAC).

Recent advances in semi-heterogenous photocatalysis in organic synthesis

Semi-heterogeneous photocatalysis has emerged as a powerful and productive platform in organic chemistry, which provides mild and eco-friendly conditions for a diverse range of bond-forming *** synergy of homogeneous catalysts and heterogeneous catalysts inherits their main advantages, such as higher activities, easy separation and superior recyclability. In this review, we summarize the recent advances in recyclable semi-heterogenous protocols for the light promoted bond-forming reactions and identify directions for future research according to the different photocatalysts/metal/redox catalysts involved. Notably, this review is not a comprehensive description of reported literature but aim to highlight and illustrate key concepts, strategies, reaction model, reaction conditions and mechanisms.

Fabrication of Ni-Zn spinel ferrite with superior magnetic performance from electric arc furnace dust and iron scale

The Ni-ZnFe_(2)O_(4)(NixZn_(1-x)Fe_(2)O_(4),x=0.4-0.7)spinel was synthesized using Zn2+extracted from electric arc furnace dust(EAFD),nickel chloride hexahydrate,and Fe^(3+)extracted from iron scale as raw *** zinc was selectively extracted from EAFD using CaO roasting followed by NH_(4)Cl solution *** ferric ion was leached from iron scale using HCl solution as acid *** experimental results demonstrate a high level of efficiency in the extraction of zinc,with a rate of 97.5%,and the leaching rate of ferric ion is 96.89%.The composition of the leaching solution is primary zinc and iron with low calcium,which is beneficial to the preparation of spinel *** influence of Ni content(x)and calcination temperature on the synthesis and magnetic properties of NixZn_(1-x)Fe_(2)O_(4)compounds was investigated by X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy,and vibrating sample *** results revealed that both Ni content and calcination temperature significantly affect the synthesis and magnetic properties of spinel NixZn_(1-x)Fe_(2)O_(4).Under the conditions of Ni content set at x=0.6,calcination temperature of 1100℃,and a duration of 2 h,a spinel NixZn_(1-x)Fe_(2)O_(4)with high saturation magnetization(Ms=65.7 A m2 kg-1)and low coercivity(Hc=0.056 A m^(-1))was obtained.

Combustion aerosols and suspended dust with controlled processes in Lhasa:Elemental analysis and size distribution characteristics

To explore air contamination resulting from special biomass combustion and suspended dust in Lhasa,the present study focused on the size distribution and chemical characteristics of particulate matter(PM)emission resulting from 7 types of non-fossil pollution *** investigated the concentration and size distribution of trace elements from 7 pollution sources collected in *** Lhasa’s atmospheric particulate matter data,enrichment factors(EFs)have been calculated to examine the potential impact of those pollution sources on the atmosphere quality of *** highest mass concentration of total elements of biomass combustion appeared at PM_(0.4),and the second highest concentration existed in the size fraction 0.4-1μm;the higher proportion(12%)of toxicmetals was produced by biomass *** elemental composition of suspended dust and atmospheric particulate matter was close(except for As and Cd);the highest concentration of elements was all noted in PM_(2.5-10)(PM3-10).Potassium was found to be one of the main biomass *** proportion of Cu in suspended dust is significantly lower than that of atmospheric particulate matter(0.53%and 3.75%),which indicates that there are other anthropogenic *** EFs analysis showed that the Cr,Cu,Zn,and Pb produced by biomass combustion were highly enriched(EFs>100)in all particle *** EFs of most trace elements increased with decreasing particle size,indicating the greater influence of humanfactors on smaller particles.

Compressible supercapacitors play an increasingly significant role in flexible sensors and wearable electronic ***,the integration of mechanical compressibility and excellent electrochemical performance into a single device remains a ***,we demonstrate a compressible and high-performance supercapacitor based on an N-doped carbon foam elastomer with hierarchical carbon *** structured Fe3C@N-doped carbon nanotubes/N-doped carbon foam and Ni@N-doped carbon nanotubes/N-doped carbon foam have been synthesized via a simple and universal self-catalytic *** hierarchical structural features of self-catalytic N-doped carbon nanotubes serve as a cushion when the composite is subjected to an external force,exhibiting excellent mechanical properties with a maximum compressive strain of 80%and fatigue resistance of 1000 ***,the different electroactive potentials of the transition-metal species in the composites provide the assembly with a maximum operating voltage of 1.4 V,which shows a maximum energy density of∼10.74 Wh kg^(−1)(0.084 mWh cm^(−3))at the power density of∼179.2 W kg^(−1)(1.4 mWh cm^(−3)),and retains 88.4%of the original capacitance after 20,000 charge–discharge cycles,even at a strain of 80%.This work paves the way for controllable fabrication of compressible electrodes and supercapacitors.

Eosinophilia and clonorchiasis presenting as fever of unknown origin in adult patients

Fever of unknown origin(FUO)is recognized as fever with uncertain diagnosis despite three days of hospital admission or three or more outpatient visits.[1]Acute liver fluke infection is characterized by fever,right upper quadrant pain,hepatomegaly,jaundice,and peripheral blood *** contrast,chronic liver fluke infection is asymptomatic in its early stage,but can easily progress to cirrhosis,cancer,or bile duct cancer *** diagnosis of clonorchiasis is particularly challenging in non-endemic *** herein report an unusual case of liver fluke infection in a patient who presented with FUO and eosinophilia.A 38-year-old male was admitted to our hospital with a history of intermittent and recurrent fever for over 10 d and a history of sudden abdominal pain for1 *** had no other medical *** than 10d ago,he visited our emergency department because of FUO,with his body temperature reaching 39.7℃,and he had no other symptoms at that *** and radiological examinations revealed:white blood cell(WBC)counts,10.9×10^(9)/L;neutrophil percentage,84.5%;eosinophil percentage,3.1%;C-reactive protein(CRP),141 mg/L;liver and kidney function,normal;influenza virus,negative;urine and stool tests,normal;and chest computed tomography(CT)findings,*** fever subsided after 1 week of anti-infective treatment with *** tests revealed the following results:WBC,15.0×10^(9)/L;neutrophil percentage,70.0%;eosinophil percentage,16.8%;and CRP,122 mg/*** antimicrobial treatment was then discontinued.

Auxiliary-field Monte Carlo method for frustrated spin systems

We extend a semiclassical numerical method, bosonic auxiliary-field Monte Carlo, to quantum spin systems. This method breaks the lattice into clusters, solves each cluster precisely and couples them with classical auxiliary fields through classical Monte Carlo simulation. We test the method with antiferromagnetic spin models in one-dimensional chains, square lattices and triangular lattices, and obtain reasonable results at finite temperatures. This algorithm builds a bridge between classical Monte Carlo method and quantum methods. The algorithm can be improved with either progress in classical Monte Carlo sampling or the development of quantum solvers, and can also be further applied to systems with different lattices or interactions.
