Androgen actions on endothelium functions and cardiovascular diseases

The roles of androgens on cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology are controversial as both beneficial and detrimental effects have been reported. Although the reasons for this discrepancy are unclear, multiple factors such as genetic and epigenetic variation, sex-specificity, hormone interactions, drug preparation and route of administration may contribute. Recently, growing evidence suggests that androgens exhibit beneficial effects on cardiovascular function though the mechanism remains to be elucidated. Endothelial cells （ECs） which line the interior surface of blood vessels are distributed throughout the circulatory system, and play a crucial role in cardiovascular function. Endothelial progenitor cells （EPCs） are considered an indispensable element for the reconstitution and maintenance of an intact endothelial layer. Endothelial dysfunction is regarded as an initiating step in development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. The modulation of endothelial functions by androgens through either genornic or nongenomic signal pathways is one possible mechanism by which androgens act on the cardiovascular system. Obtaining insight into the mechanisms by which androgens affect EC and EPC functions will allow us to determine whether androgens possess beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system. This in turn may be critical in the prevention and therapy of cardiovascular diseases. This article seeks to review recent progress in androgen regulation of endothelial function, the sex-specificity of androgen actions, and its clinical applications in the cardiovascular system.

Elevated Arsenic Exposure Is Associated with an Increased Risk of Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Infection： NHANES （2003-2014） in U.S. Adults

Studies concerning the association between arsenic exposure and hepatitis B virus （HBV） infection have been lacking. The present study aimed to examine the association between total urinary arsenic （TUA） and infection ofHBV. A total of 5186 participants from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey （NHANES） 2003-2014 were included in the analysis. We used logistic regression to evaluate the association. We defined two measures of TUA. TUA1 was the sum of arsenous acid, arsenicacid, monomethylarsonic acid and dimethylarsenic acid. TUA2 was defined as TUA minus arsenobetaine and arsenocholine. The results showed that the weighted overall prevalence of HBV infection was 6.08%. For NHANES 2003-2014, the medians （interquartile range） of TUA1 and TUA2 were 5.60 μg/L （3.97-8.09 μg/L） and 4.91 μg/L （2.36-9.11 μg/L）, respectively. Comparing the highest quartile to the lowest quartile after multivariable adjustment showed that the odds ratios （ORs） and 95% confidence intervals （CIs） for TUA1 and TUA2 were 2.44 （1.40-4.27） and 2.84 （1.60-5.05）, respectively. In conclusion, elevated urinary arsenic was associated with the risk of HBV infection. Further studies, especially prospective studies, are needed to confirm the causal relationship between arsenic exposure and HBV infection.

Symbolic execution is an effective way of systematically exploring the search space of a program,and is often used for automatic software testing and bug *** program to be analyzed is usually compiled into a binary or an intermediate representation,on which symbolic execution is carried *** this process,compiler optimizations influence the effectiveness and efficiency of symbolic ***,to the best of our knowledge,there exists no work on compiler optimization recommendation for symbolic execution with respect to(w.r.t.)modified condition/decision coverage(MC/DC),which is an important testing coverage criterion widely used for mission-critical *** study describes our use of a state-of-the-art symbolic execution tool to carry out extensive experiments to study the impact of compiler optimizations on symbolic execution ***/*** results indicate that instruction combining(IC)optimization is the important and dominant optimization for symbolic execution ***/*** designed and implemented a support vector machine based optimization recommendation method ***(denoted as auto).The experiments on two standard benchmarks(Coreutils and NECLA)showed that auto achieves the best MC/DC on 67.47%of Coreutils programs and 78.26%of NECLA programs.

Catheter ablation has been an established strategy for treating paroxysmal atrial fibrillation （AF）.Pulmonaryvein isolation is the predominant approach of catheter ablation. This procedure is characterized as transseptal catheterization and point-by-point ablation around the ipsilateral pulmonary veins （PVs）. Although catheter ablation can be safely performed in a heart with normal structures, it may be challenging to be performed in a dextrocardia.

One of the major obstacles for the clinical use of biodegradable magnesium(Mg)-based materials is their high corrosion rate. Micro-arc oxidation(MAO) coatings on Mg alloys provide mild corrosion protection owing to their porous structure. Hence, in this study a dense Mg(OH)2 film was fabricated on MAO-coated Mg alloy AZ31 in an alkaline electrolyte containing ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid disodium(EDTA-2 Na) to reinforce the protection. Surface morphology, chemical composition and growth process of the MAO/Mg(OH)2 hybrid coating were examined using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer. Corrosion resistance of the coatings was evaluated via potentiodynamic polarization curves and hydrogen evolution tests. Results manifested that the Mg(OH)2 coating possesses a porous nano-sized structure and completely seals the micro-pores and micro-cracks of the MAO *** intermetallic compound of AlMn phase in the substrate plays a key role in the growth of Mg(OH)2 film. The current density of Mg(OH)2-MAO composite coating decreases three orders of magnitude in comparison with that of bare substrate, indicating excellent corrosion resistance. The Mg(OH)2-MAO composite coating is beneficial to the formation of calcium phosphate corrosion products on the surface of Mg alloy AZ31, demonstrating a great promise for orthopaedic applications.

Spontaneous viral clearance after 6-21 years of hepatitis B and C viruses coinfection in high HBV endemic area

AIM: To investigate the clinical and virological course of coinfection by hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in ***: We enrolled 40 patients with chronic HBV and HCV coinfection (Group BC), 16 patients with chronic HBV infection (Group B) and 31 patients with chronic HCV infection (Group C). They infected HBV and/or HCV during 1982 to *** of all the 87 patients were collected in 1994 and 2002respectively. We detected biochemical and virologic markers and serum HBV DNA and HCV RNA levels of all the patients. Btype ultrasound detection was performed in some ***: In Group BC, 67.5% of the patients cleared HBsAg,and 92.5% of the patients cleared HBeAg. The clearance rate of HBV DNA was 87.5%. There was no significant difference of HBV clearance between Group BC and Group B. In Group BC, 85.7% of males and 47.4% of females cleared HBV, and males were easier to clear HBV (x2=6.686, P=0.010). Such a tendency was also found in Group B. The clearance rate of HCV RNA in Group BC was 87.5%, significantly higher than that in Group C (x2=22.963, P＜0.001). Less than 40% of the patients in all groups had elevated liver enzyme values. The highest value of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) was 218 u/L (normal range for ALT is 0-40 u/L). In most patients the ultrasonogram presentations changed ***: The clinical manifestations of patients with HBV/HCV coinfection are mild and occult. High clearance rate of HBV and easy to clear HBV in male patients are the characteristics of HBV infection in adults in China. HBV can inhibit HCV replication, but no evidence has been found in our data that HCV suppresses HBV replication.

Transvenous embolization of cavernous dural arteriovenous fistula:report of 28 cases

Background Usually, cavernous dural arteriovenous fistula can be treated via transarterial approaches. However, in many complicated patients, transvenous approaches are superior to the transarterial ones because of the difficulties during a transarterial operation. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the outcomes of 28 patients with cavernous dural arteriovenous fistula treated by transvenous embolization. Methods From September 2001 to December 2005, 28 patients with 31 cavernous dural arteriovenous fistulae were treated with transvenous embolization in Beijing Tiantan Hospital. The involved cavernous sinuses were catheterized via the femoral vein-inferior petrosal sinus approach or the femoral-facial-superior ophthalmic vein approach, and embolized with coils （GDC, EDC, Matrix, Orbit or free coil） or coils plus silk. The patients were followed up for 3 to 26 months. Results All the 31 cavernous sinuses in the 28 patients were successfully embolized. Complete angiographic obliteration of the fistulae was achieved immediately in 25 patients. Residual shunting was observed in the other 3, who had drainage through the pterygoid plexus （2 patients） or the inferior petrosal sinus （1） after the operation. Headache and vomiting were the most common symptoms after the embolization. In 3 patients, who achieved complete angiographic obliteration immediately, the left oculomotor nerve palsy remained unchanged after the operation. Transient abducens nerve palsy was encountered in 1. In 1 patient, the occular symptoms were improved after the operation, but recurred 4 days later, and then disappeared spontaneously after 5 days. During the follow-up, no patient had recurrence. Three months after the operation, angiography was performed on the 3 patients with residual shunting.
