Cicadas usually sing and mate in the higher parts of trees.Studies addressing the effects of different acoustic signals on mate choice in Cicadidae are very limited.We investigated the effects of both acoustical features and morphological traits on mate choice in an East Asian cicada Platypleura kaempferi.Males produce high-rate calling songs that attract females,then produce low-rate courtship songs to secure mating when a female is attracted.Higher calling song rate(CR),shorter single-pulse duration,and shorter pulse period of the calling song,together with lower courtship song rate and longer echeme period of the courtship song,are the most desirable traits used by females to choose a mate.These traits indicate that the more amale can raise the rate of song production,the higher the probability he is sexually selected by the female.No correlation was found between morphological traits and mating success.After mating,a minority of males started emitting calling songs again,but the CR was significantly lower than before mating and none of them attracted a new mate later.This promotes females mating with unmated males.We hypothesize that P.kaempferi may have the best of both worlds due to the unique song modulation and the mechanism of female mate choice:males change energetically,costly acoustic signals to achieve mates,while females choose a mate based on males’acoustic properties.Our results contribute to better understanding the diversity of mating preference and enrich the mechanism of mate choice in acoustic insects.

Stress granules are non-membranous cytoplasmic foci induced by various stress conditions.It is a protective strategy used by cells to suppress overall translation during stress.In cancer cells,it was thought that the formation of stress granules could protect them from apoptosis and induces resistance towards anti-cancer drugs or radiation treatment which makes the stress granules a potential target for cancer treatment.However,most of our understanding of stress granules are still in the stage of molecular and cell biology,and a transitional gap for its actual effect on clinical settings remains.In this review,we summarize the mechanism and effect of stress granules formation in cancer and try to illuminate its potential applications in cancer therapy,using breast cancer as an example.

Fiber is one of the most fundamental material forms seen in human life.Beftting from their long and bendable shape,fbers with diferent specialties and diferent dimensions are used in a multitude of applications,ranging from fabrics[1]to telecommunications[2],from generating laser[3]to sensing and actuating,etc.[4-6].In recent years,major breakthroughs were made,demonstrating that fbers have novel optical[7-9],electronic[10],acoustic[11,12]and cell interfacing[13,14]properties that enable new functionalities.Functional fbers and related application research are at the crossroads of many disciplines,including optics,materials science,device physics,nanotechnology,and fuid dynamics.

Uncovering mate choice and factors that lead to the choice are very important to understanding sexual selection in evolutionary change.Cicadas are known for their loud sounds produced by males using the timbals.However,males in certain cicada species emit 2 kinds of sounds using respectively timbals and stridulatory organs,and females may produce their own sounds to respond to males.What has never been considered is the mate choice in such cicada species.Here,we investigate the sexual selection and potential impact of predation pressure on mate choice in the cicada Subpsaltria yangi Chen.It possesses stridulatory sound-producing organs in both sexes in addition to the timbals in males.Results show that males producing calling songs with shorter timbal–stridulatory sound intervals and a higher call rate achieved greater mating success.No morphological traits were found to be correlated with mating success in both sexes,suggesting neither males nor females display mate preference for the opposite sex based on morphological traits.Males do not discriminate among responding females during mate searching,which may be due to the high energy costs associated with their unusual mate-seeking activity and the male-biased predation pressure.Females generally mate once but a minority of them re-mated after oviposition which,combined with the desirable acoustic traits of males,suggest females may maximize their reproductive success by choosing a high-quality male in the first place.This study contributes to our understanding mechanisms of sexual selection in cicadas and other insects suffering selective pressure from predators.

The recent emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)caused serious harm to human health and struck a blow to global economic development.Research on SARS-CoV-2 has greatly benefited from the use of reverse genetics systems,which have been established to artificially manipulate the viral genome,generating recombinant and reporter infectious viruses or biosafety level 2(BSL-2)-adapted non-infectious replicons with desired modifications.These tools have been instrumental in studying the molecular biological characteristics of the virus,investigating antiviral therapeutics,and facilitating the development of attenuated vaccine candidates.Here,we review the construction strategies,development,and applications of reverse genetics systems for SARS-CoV-2,which may be applied to other CoVs as well.

Technical progress of China’s national remote sensing mapping:from mapping western China to national dynamic mapping

Remote sensing mapping is an important research direction in the development of geographic surveying and mapping.In order to successfully implement the project of Mapping Western China(MWC),a technical mapping system has been established.In this project,many problems have been solved through technological innovation,such as block adjustment with scarce control points,large-scale aerial/satellite image mapping,and intelligent interpretation of multi-source images.Several softwares were developed,e.g.PixelGrid for aerial/satellite image mapping in a large area,FeatureStation for the integration of multi-source data in the complex terrain areas,and an airborne multi-band and multi-polarization interferometric data acquisition system for SAR mapping.For the first time,full coverage of 1:50,000 topographic data of China’s land territory has been produced,which means the geospatial framework of digital China is basically completed.With the implementation of other key national plans and projects(i.***.national geographic conditions monitoring and national remote sensing mapping),the focus has changed from MWC to national dynamic mapping.Accordingly,a dynamic mapping system is established.The data acquisition capability has developed from a single source to multiple sources and multiple modalities.The mapping capability has developed into dynamic mapping,and the capability for database update shows the characteristics of collaboration.The national geographic condition monitoring creates a multi-scale index system for statistical analysis for various needs.A multi-level and multi-dimensional technical system for statistical computing and decision-making service is developed for the transformation from dynamic monitoring to information service.In this paper,we give a brief introduction about the recent development of remote sensing mapping in China with respect to data acquisition,map production,and information service.The purpose of this paper is to motivate the establishment of theory and method for remote sensing mapping,

Novel advances in the field of brain imaging have enabled the unprecedented clinical application of various imaging modalities to facilitate disease diagnosis and treatment. Electrical impedance tomography(EIT) is a functional imaging technique that measures the transfer impedances between electrodes on the body surface to estimate the spatial distribution of electrical properties of tissues. EIT offers many advantages over other neuroimaging technologies,which has led to its potential clinical use. This qualitative review provides an overview of the basic principles,algorithms, and system composition of EIT. Recent advances in the field of EIT are discussed in the context of epilepsy,stroke, brain injuries and edema, and other brain diseases. Further, we summarize factors limiting the development of brain EIT and highlight prospects for the field. In epilepsy imaging, there have been advances in EIT imaging depth,from cortical to subcortical regions. In stroke research, a bedside EIT stroke monitoring system has been developed for clinical practice, and data support the role of EIT in multi-modal imaging for diagnosing stroke. Additionally, EIT has been applied to monitor the changes in brain water content associated with cerebral edema, enabling the early identification of brain edema and the evaluation of mannitol dehydration. However, anatomically realistic geometry,inhomogeneity, cranium completeness, anisotropy and skull type, etc., must be considered to improve the accuracy of EIT modeling. Thus, the further establishment of EIT as a mature and routine diagnostic technique will necessitate the accumulation of more supporting evidence.

User Profile in Smart Elderly Care Community:Findings from Community in Western China

With the increase in the aging population,the need for elderly care services has diversified,and smart elderly care has become an effective measure to cope with this increasing aging population.Based on the data from the platform“Guan Hu Tong”of RQ Company in the community of Shaanxi Province in western China,this study mined the data of smart elderly care services through the recency,frequency and monetary value(RFM)model and the backpropagation(BP)neural network model,constructed the user profile of the elderly,and predicted users’practical demands.The following conclusions were drawn:The oldest users are important target users of smart elderly care service platforms;Elderly women living alone rely more on smart elderly care services;Meal delivery and health follow-up services are the most popular among elderly users.

Atmospheric Circulation Patterns over East Asia and Their Connection with Summer Precipitation and Surface Air Temperature in Eastern China during 1961–2013

Based on the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and Chinese observational data during 1961–2013, atmospheric circulation patterns over East Asia in summer and their connection with precipitation and surface air temperature in eastern China as well as associated external forcing are investigated. Three patterns of the atmospheric circulation are identified, all with quasi-barotropic structures：（1） the East Asia/Pacific（EAP） pattern,（2） the Baikal Lake/Okhotsk Sea（BLOS） pattern, and（3） the eastern China/northern Okhotsk Sea（ECNOS） pattern. The positive EAP pattern significantly increases precipitation over the Yangtze River valley and favors cooling north of the Yangtze River and warming south of the Yangtze River in summer. The warm sea surface temperature anomalies over the tropical Indian Ocean suppress convection over the northwestern subtropical Pacific through the Ekman divergence induced by a Kelvin wave and excite the EAP pattern. The positive BLOS pattern is associated with below-average precipitation south of the Yangtze River and robust cooling over northeastern China. This pattern is triggered by anomalous spring sea ice concentration in the northern Barents Sea. The anomalous sea ice concentration contributes to a Rossby wave activity flux originating from the Greenland Sea, which propagates eastward to North Pacific. The positive ECNOS pattern leads to below-average precipitation and significant warming over northeastern China in summer. The reduced soil moisture associated with the earlier spring snowmelt enhances surface warming over Mongolia and northeastern China and the later spring snowmelt leads to surface cooling over Far East in summer, both of which are responsible for the formation of the ECNOS pattern.
