The idea of assembling a Special Issue on Pollen Tube and Reproduction in Molecular Plant was conceived during the organization of the 2012 Pollen Biology International Symposium and Workshop held at the Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology （SIPPE）, Chinese Academy of Science （CAS）, 27-31 October 2012. wei-Hua Tang of the SIPPE led the organization, with the support of Hong-wei Xue, Director of SIPPE acting as Chair of the Organization Committee. The 2-d symposium was attended by about 100 international participants and focused on reports and discus- sions on the most recent research activities in the field. The 2-d workshop that followed provided a forum for in-depth introduction on various aspects of pollen and plant reproduc- tion biology to about 200 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and new investigators to the field.

Experiments on shaped charge penetration into high and ultrahigh strength steel-fiber reactive powder concrete(RPC) targets were performed in this *** show that the variation of penetration depth and crater diameter with concrete strength is different from that of shaped charge penetration into normal strength concrete(NSC).The crater diameter of RPC is smaller than that of NSC penetrated by the shaped *** jet particles are strongly disturbed and hardly reach the crater bottom because they pass through the narrow channel formed by jet penetration into the *** effects of radial drift velocity and gap effects of jet particles for a shaped charge penetration into RFC target are ***,a theoretical model is presented to describe the penetration of shaped charge into RPC *** the concrete strength increases,the penetration resistance increases and the entrance crater diameter *** the drift velocity and narrow crater channel,the low-velocity jet particles can hardly reach the crater bottom to increase the penetration ***,the narrow channel has a stronger interference to the jet particles with increasing concrete strength;hence,the gap effects must be *** drift velocity and gap effects,which are the same as penetration resistance,also have significant effects during the process of shaped charge penetration into ultrahigh-strength concrete,The crater profiles are calculated through a theoretical model,and the results are in good agreement with the experiments.

An easy method is presented to fabricate monodisperse magnetic macroporous polymer beads（MMPBs）. Waterin-oil high internal phase emulsion（HIPE） is prepared by emulsifying aqueous iron ions solution in an oil phase containing monomers. The HIPE is introduced into a simple microfluidic device to fabricate monodisperse（water-in-oil）-in-water double emulsion droplets. The droplets serve as microreactors to synthesize Fe3O4 nanoparticles and are on-line polymerized to form MMPBs. The prepared MMPBs display uniform size, interconnected porous structure, superparamagnetic behavior and uniform distribution of Fe3O4 in polymer matrix. The MMPBs are characterized by scanning electron microscopy（SEM）, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（FTIR）, X-ray diffraction（XRD）, transmission electron microscopy（TEM）, vibrating sample magnetometry（VSM）. We believe that this method is a universal technique in preparing macroporous nanocomposite beads.

Assessing Maize Drought Hazard for Agricultural Areas Based on the Fuzzy Gamma Model

Drought is one of the severe meteorological disasters and causes of serious losses for agricultural productions, and early assessment of drought hazard degree is critical in management of maize farming. This study proposes a novel method for assessment of maize drought hazard in different growth stages. First, the study divided the maize growth period into four critical growth stages, including seeding, elongation, tasseling, and filling. Second, maize drought causal factors were selected and the fuzzy membership function was established. Finally, the study built a fuzzy gamma model to assess maize drought hazards, and the gamma 0.93 was finally established using Monte Carlo Analysis. Performing fuzzy gamma operation with 0.93 for gamma and classifying the area yielded a map of maize drought hazards with four zones of light, moderate, severe, and extreme droughts. Using actual field collected data, seven selected samples for drought hazard degree were examined, the model output proved to be a valid tool in the assessment maize drought hazard. This model will be very useful in analyzing the spatial change of maize drought hazard and influence on yield, which is significant for drought management in major agricultural areas.

RNA helicases are adenosine tri-phosphatases that unwind the secondary structures of RNAs and are required in almost any aspect of RNA metabolism. They are highly conserved from prokaryotic to eukaryotic organisms. However, their precise roles in plant physiology and development remain to be clarified. Here we report that the mutation in the gene SLOW WALKER3 （SWA3） results in the slow and retarded progression of mitosis during megagametogenesis in Arabidopsis. SWA3 is a putative RNA helicase of the DEAD-box subfamily. Mutant megagametophyte development is arrested at fouror eight-nucleate stages, furthermore, one of the synergids in about half of the mutant embryo sacs displays abnormal polarity, with its nucleus locating at the chalazal end, instead of the micropylar end in the wild-type. Transmission of the mutation through female gametophytes is severely reduced in swa3. However, a small portion of mutant embryo sacs are able to develop into mature and functional female gametophytes when pollination was postponed. The SWA3 in Arabidopsis is a homolog of Dbp8 in yeast. Dbp8 interacts with Efs2 and is essential for biogenesis of 18S rRNA in yeast. Our data suggest that SWA3 may form a complex with AtEfs2 and take roles in ribosomal biogenesis as RNA helicase during megagametogenesis in Arabidopsis.

Constructing heterojunctions and hollow multi-shelled structures can render materials with fascinating physicochemical properties,and have been regarded as two promising strategies to overcome the severe shuttling and sluggish kinetics of polysulfide in lithium-sulfur(Li-S)***,a single strategy can only take limited *** catalytic hosts with synergistic effects are urgently ***,Mn_(3)O_(4)-MnS heterogeneous multi-shelled hollow spheres are meticulously designed by controlled sulfuration of Mn2O3 hollow spheres,and then applied as advanced encapsulation hosts for Li-S *** from the separated spatial confinement by hollow multi-shelled structure,ample exposed active sites and built-in electric field by heterogeneous interface,and synergistic effects between Mn_(3)O_(4)(strong adsorption)and MnS(fast conversion)components,the assembled battery achieves prominent rate capability and decent cyclability(0.016%decay per cycle at 2 C,1000 cycles).More crucially,satisfactory areal capacity reaches up to 7.1 mAh cm^(-2)even with high sulfur loading(8.0 mg cm^(-2))and lean electrolyte(E/S=4.0 pL mg^(-1))*** work will provide inspiration for the rational design of hollow multi-shelled heterostructure for various electrocatalysis applications.
