SKY BLUE,RED HEAVENS,AND ORANGE OVER ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA

As a child,my classmates and I almost always painted the sky blue in kindergarten and elementary school,and the idea of"blue skies"has become synonymous with happy times now,and good tidings *** how did Ancient Mesopotamians think about the color of the sky,and its daylight and nighttime phenomena?Based on the cuneiform evidence,we first examine ancient concepts of blue and red in the heavens,and finish with evidence indicating the planet,Mars,was seen as the color"fire・red,''that is to say the color of the crayon today labeled"orange."

CUNEIFORM IN CANAAN:HISTORY,HISTORIOGRAPHY,AND METHODOLOGY

In the following paper I would like to share some thoughts on issues of history and historiography arising from the recently completed Cuneiform in Canaan project, whose main findings appeared in the spring of 2006 in a book of the same name by this author and Takayoshi Oshima now of The University of Bucharest, with editions of alphabetic cuneiform texts by Seth Sanders.I will begin my discussion with a short introduction describing the project and its findings, and then move on to the main portion of the paper, namely a review of historical, historiographical, and methodological issues arising from the Cuneiform in Canaan project.
