Genetic outcomes from the translocations of the critically endangered woylie

Translocations are an important conservation strategy for many species. However simply observing demographic growth of a translocated population is not sufficient to infer species recovery. Adequate genetic representation of the source population（s） and their long-term viability should also be considered. The woylie bettongia penicillata ogilbyi has been subject to more formal translocations for conservation than any other marsupial that, up until recently, has resulted in one of the most suc- cessful species recoveries in Australia. we used mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers to assess the genetic outcomes of trans- located woylie populations. These populations have lost genetic variability, differentiated fxom their source population and the supplementation program on two island populations appears to have failed. we discuss the conservation implications that our re- suits have for managing threatened species, outline some general recommendations for the management of present and future translocations and discuss the appropriate sampling design for the establishment of new populations or captive breeding programs that may mitigate the genetic ＇erosion＇ seen in our study species. This research provides some practical outcomes and a pragmatic understanding of translocation biology. The findings are directly applicable to other translocation programs .

background Paediatric obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally,resulting in significant adverse effects on health and *** life events,including those that happen before,during,and after pregnancy can predispose children to later *** purpose of this review is to examine the magnitude of obesity among New Zealand children and adolescents,and to determine their underlying risk factors and associated *** sources PubMed,web of Science,and Google Scholar searches were performed using the key terms 'obesity','overweight','children','adolescents',and 'New Zealand'.Results Obesity is a major public health concern in New Zealand,with more than 33% of children and adolescents aged 2-14 years being overweight or *** disproportionately affects Māori (New Zealand's indigenous population) and Pacific children and adolescents,as well as those of lower socioeconomic *** Zealand's obesity epidemic is associated with numerous health issues,including cardiometabolic,gastrointestinal,and psychological problems,which also disproportionately affect Māori and Pacific children and ***,a number of factors may be useful to identify those at increased risk (such as demographic and anthropometric characteristics) and inform possible *** The prevalence of overweight and obese children and adolescents in New Zealand is markedly high,with a greater impact on particular ethnicities and those of lower socioeconomic *** the current burden of pediatric obesity should be a key priority for New Zealand,for the benefit of both current and subsequent *** strategies should focus on obesity prevention,particularly starting at a young age and targeting those at greatest risk.

Risk of New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation in Elderly Patients with the Overlap Syndrome: A Retrospective Cohort Study

background Co-existence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is referred to as overlap syndrome. Overlap patients have greater degree of hypoxia and pulmonary hypertension than patients with OSA or COPD alone. Studies showed that elderly patients with OSA alone do not have increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) but it is not known if overlap patients have higher risk of AF. Objective To determine whether elderly patients with overlap syndrome have an increased risk of AF. Methods In this single center, community-based retrospective cohort analysis, data were collected on 2,873 patients > 65 years of age without AF, presenting in the year 2006. Patients were divided into OSA group (n = 60), COPD group (n = 416), overlap syndrome group (n = 28) and group with no OSA or COPD(n = 2369). The primary endpoint was incidence of new-onset AF over the following two years. Logistic regression was performed to adjust for heart failure (HF), coronary artery disease, hypertension (HTN), cerebrovascular disease, cardiac valve disorders, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and obesity. Results The incidence of AF was 10% in COPD group, 6% in OSA group and 21% in overlap syndrome group (P with overlap syndrome demonstrated a significant association with new-onset AF (OR = 3.66, P = 0.007). HF, CKD and HTNwere also significantly associated with new-onset AF (P with a marked increase in risk of new-onset AF as compared to the presence of OSA or COPDalone.

background No studies have examined endogenous insulin secretion in pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes in China using the gold-standard mixed-meal tolerance *** the latter is labor-intensive,we examined simpler surrogate markers of endogenous insulin secretion in Chinese youth,as previously reported for a European *** Participants were 57 children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes aged 4.4-16.8 years(56% females).we per-formed 120-minute mixed-meal tolerance tests with serum C-peptide(CP)measurements every 30 *** insulin deficiency(SID)was defined as CP peakwere measured at 0 and 120 *** Twenty-five(44%)patients had *** CP levels missed one case(96% sensitivity)with no false posi-tives(100% specificity).while the 120-minute urine CP/creatinine had 100% sensitivity,it yielded markedly lower speci-ficity(63%).Every 1-year increase in diabetes duration and 1-year decrease in age at diagnosis were associated with 37%(Pbe used to detect most SID cases in Chinese youth with type 1 *** CP is a far more reliable measure of endogenous insulin secretion than the more commonly used insulin ***,it could more precisely determine insulin secretory capacity to target those who could benefit,if treatments to preserve residual insulin secretion are developed.

Carbon dioxide conversion to valuable chemical products over composite catalytic systems

This paper reports an experimental study on catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide to methanol, ethanol and acetic acid. Satalysts having different catalytic functions were synthesized and combined in different ways to enhance the selectivity to desired products. The combined catalyst system possessed the following functions： methanol synthesis, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, water-gas-shift and hydrogenation. Results showed that the methods of integrating these catalytic functions played an important role in achieving the desired product selectivity. we speculate that if methanol synthesis sites were located adjacent to the C--C chain growth sites, the formation rate of C2 oxygenates would be enhanced. The advantage of using a high temperature methanol catalyst PdZnA1 in the combined catalyst system was demonstrated. In the presence of PdZnA1 catalyst, the combined catalyst system was stable at 380 ~C. It was observed that, at high temperature, kinetics favored oxygenate formation. The results implied that the process can be intensified by operating at high temperature using Pd-based methanol synthesis catalyst. Steam reforming of the byproduct organics was demonstrated as a means to provide supplemental hydrogen. Preliminary process design, simulation, and economic analysis of the proposed CO2 conversion process were carded out. Economic analysis indicates how ethanol production cost was affected by the price of CO2 and hydrogen.

bACKGROUND Cannabis use has increased among young individuals in recent *** dependent cannabis use disorder(CUD)has been associated with various cardiac events,its effects on young adults without concurrent substance use remain *** To examine trends in hospitalizations for major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events(MACCE)in this *** used the National Inpatient Sample(2016-2019)to identify hospitalized young individuals(18-44 years),excluding those with concurrent substance usage(tobacco,alcohol,and cocaine).They were divided into CUD+and CUD-.Using International Classification of Diseases-10 codes,we examined the trends in MACCE hospitalizations,including all-cause mortality(ACM),acute myocardial infarction(AMI),cardiac arrest(CA),and acuteischemic stroke(AIS).RESULTSOf 27.4 million hospitalizations among young adults without concurrent substance abuse,4.2%(1.1 million)hadco-existent *** CUD+group,hospitalization rates for MACCE(1.71%vs 1.35%),AMI(0.86%vs 0.54%),CA(0.27%vs 0.24%),and AIS(0.49%vs 0.35%)were higher than in CUD-group(Pwever,rate of ACMhospitalizations was lower in CUD+group(0.30%vs 0.44%).From 2016 to 2019,CUD+group experienced arelative rise of 5%in MACCE and 20%in AMI hospitalizations,compared to 22%and 36%increases in CUDgroup(Pwever,when adjusted for confounders,MACCE odds among CUD+cohort remain comparable between 2016 and *** CUD+group had higher rates of MACCE,but the rising trends were more apparent in the CUD-group ***,the CUD+group had lower ACM rates than the CUD-group.
