Genetic outcomes from the translocations of the critically endangered woylie

Translocations are an important conservation strategy for many species. However simply observing demographic growth of a translocated population is not sufficient to infer species recovery. Adequate genetic representation of the source population（s） and their long-term viability should also be considered. The woylie bettongia penicillata ogilbyi has been subject to more formal translocations for conservation than any other marsupial that, up until recently, has resulted in one of the most suc- cessful species recoveries in Australia. We used mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers to assess the genetic outcomes of trans- located woylie populations. These populations have lost genetic variability, differentiated fxom their source population and the supplementation program on two island populations appears to have failed. We discuss the conservation implications that our re- suits have for managing threatened species, outline some general recommendations for the management of present and future translocations and discuss the appropriate sampling design for the establishment of new populations or captive breeding programs that may mitigate the genetic ＇erosion＇ seen in our study species. This research provides some practical outcomes and a pragmatic understanding of translocation biology. The findings are directly applicable to other translocation programs .

background Paediatric obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally,resulting in significant adverse effects on health and *** life events,including those that happen before,during,and after pregnancy can predispose children to later *** purpose of this review is to examine the magnitude of obesity among New Zealand children and adolescents,and to determine their underlying risk factors and associated *** sources PubMed,Web of Science,and Google Scholar searches were performed using the key terms 'obesity','overweight','children','adolescents',and 'New Zealand'.Results Obesity is a major public health concern in New Zealand,with more than 33% of children and adolescents aged 2-14 years being overweight or *** disproportionately affects Māori (New Zealand's indigenous population) and Pacific children and adolescents,as well as those of lower socioeconomic *** Zealand's obesity epidemic is associated with numerous health issues,including cardiometabolic,gastrointestinal,and psychological problems,which also disproportionately affect Māori and Pacific children and ***,a number of factors may be useful to identify those at increased risk (such as demographic and anthropometric characteristics) and inform possible *** The prevalence of overweight and obese children and adolescents in New Zealand is markedly high,with a greater impact on particular ethnicities and those of lower socioeconomic *** the current burden of pediatric obesity should be a key priority for New Zealand,for the benefit of both current and subsequent *** strategies should focus on obesity prevention,particularly starting at a young age and targeting those at greatest risk.

Peperomia pellucida(L.) Kunth is a medicinal plant used to manage inflammatory illnesses such as conjunctivitis, and gastrointestinal and respiratory tract disorders in tropical and subtropical ***, little is known about its pharmacological mechanism of action against eye diseases. This review aims to critically discuss the phytochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology of P. pellucida as well as its roles in the treatment of cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Recent developments in the uses of P. pellucida for healthcare and nutraceutical products by the pharmaceutical industry are also covered in this review. For this review, a literature search was performed with PubMed, ScienceDirect, SciFinder Scholar and Scopus databases, using relevant keywords. Among the various phytochemicals identified from P. pellucida, β-caryophyllene, carotol, dillapiole, ellagic acid, pellucidin A, phytol and vitexin exhibit strong pharmacological activities within the mitogen-activated protein kinase and nuclear factor-κb signalling pathways in inflammatory eye diseases. The antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant,antihyperglycemic and anti-angiogenic activities displayed by P. pellucida extracts in many in vitro,in vivo and clinical studies suggest its potential role in the management of inflammatory eye diseases.P. pellucida extract was non-toxic against normal cell lines but displayed mild toxicity in animal *** growing public interest in P. pellucida has inspired the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries to process the plant into health products. Although the potential pharmacological mechanisms against eye diseases have been summarized, further studies of the interactions among constituent phytochemicals from P. pellucida within various signalling pathways shall support the use of the plant as an alternative therapeutic source.

Tumours of salivary glands in the stomatology and maxillo-facial surgery unit at the university hospital centre —Yalgado Ouédraogo

The aim of this study was to contribute to strengthening the efficiency in the treatment of the salivary gland tumours in the Stomatology and Maxillo-facial surgery service at the University Hospital Centre/Yalgado OUEDRAOGO of Ouagadougou. It has been a retrospective and descriptive study covering seven (7) years [January 2006-December 2012] on epidemiology and the treatment of 54 cases of the salivary glands tumours histologically confirmed. benign tumours (non-malignant tumours were prevalent (61.11% of cases). The annual incidences were 4.71 cases for non malignant tumours and 3 cases for malignant tumours. The average age was 34-45 years for non malignant tumours and 44-33 years for malignant ones. In both groups, the tumour was discovered lately with an average 32-48 months before consulting in case of non malignant tumours and 18-29 months for malignant tumours. The location of non malignant tumours was very often the parotid (42.42%), under mandible gland (27.28%). Malignant tumours very often concerned the parotid (76.18%) and the under mandible gland (14.29%). The histology has revealed that pleomorphic adenoma was the leading type of non-malignant tumours (93.94% of cases) whereas carcinoma was predominant in malignant tumours (80.95% of cases). Long term track keeping was difficult and it has been complicated by the loss of contact with some patients. The low living standard, the time wasted before consulting, limited human resources and therapeutic means constitute handicaps to the treatment in our African context.

本试验采用25个新的大豆品系为材料,用Robinson等的公式计算了选择指数的遗传进展;用Johnson等的公式计算了直接选择产量的遗传进展;用选择指数的遗传进展占直接选择产量的遗传进展的百分率表示选择指数的相对选择效率;用判别函数求得选择指数的公式。试验结果表明:除了单因子指数选择的效率低于直接选择产量的效率外,所有的指数选择效率都高于直接选择产量。包括所有10个性状的指数选择效的相对效率最高(115.25％)。从经济和简便的角度出发,我们认为包括5个性状(小区产量,熟期,株高,每株荚数,百粒重)的指数选择是可行的。它的相对选择效率是114.07％。

Risk of New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation in Elderly Patients with the Overlap Syndrome: A Retrospective Cohort Study

background Co-existence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is referred to as overlap syndrome. Overlap patients have greater degree of hypoxia and pulmonary hypertension than patients with OSA or COPD alone. Studies showed that elderly patients with OSA alone do not have increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) but it is not known if overlap patients have higher risk of AF. Objective To determine whether elderly patients with overlap syndrome have an increased risk of AF. Methods In this single center, community-based retrospective cohort analysis, data were collected on 2,873 patients > 65 years of age without AF, presenting in the year 2006. Patients were divided into OSA group (n = 60), COPD group (n = 416), overlap syndrome group (n = 28) and group with no OSA or COPD(n = 2369). The primary endpoint was incidence of new-onset AF over the following two years. Logistic regression was performed to adjust for heart failure (HF), coronary artery disease, hypertension (HTN), cerebrovascular disease, cardiac valve disorders, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and obesity. Results The incidence of AF was 10% in COPD group, 6% in OSA group and 21% in overlap syndrome group (P < 0.05). After adjusting for age, sex, HF, CKD, and HTN, patientswith overlap syndrome demonstrated a significant association with new-onset AF (OR = 3.66, P = 0.007). HF, CKD and HTNwere also significantly associated with new-onset AF (P < 0.05). Conclusion Among elderly patients, the presence of overlap syndrome is associatedwith a marked increase in risk of new-onset AF as compared to the presence of OSA or COPDalone.

background No studies have examined endogenous insulin secretion in pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes in China using the gold-standard mixed-meal tolerance *** the latter is labor-intensive,we examined simpler surrogate markers of endogenous insulin secretion in Chinese youth,as previously reported for a European *** Participants were 57 children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes aged 4.4-16.8 years(56% females).We per-formed 120-minute mixed-meal tolerance tests with serum C-peptide(CP)measurements every 30 *** insulin deficiency(SID)was defined as CP peakbetes duration and 1-year decrease in age at diagnosis were associated with 37%(Pbe used to detect most SID cases in Chinese youth with type 1 *** CP is a far more reliable measure of endogenous insulin secretion than the more commonly used insulin ***,it could more precisely determine insulin secretory capacity to target those who could benefit,if treatments to preserve residual insulin secretion are developed.
