t.e frugivorous "t.ue" fruit.fly, Bact.ocera t.yoni (Queensland.fruit.fly), is presum.d.t. have a nonresourced.based.lek m.t.ng syst.m. t.is is largely unt.st.d. and.cont.ary d.t. exist. t. suggest.Bact.ocera t.yoni m.y have a resource-based.m.t.ng syst.m.focused.on fruit.ng host.plant.. We t.st.d.t.e m.t.ng syst.m.ofBact.ocera t.yoni, and.it. close sibling Bact.ocera neohum.ralis, in large field.cages using laborat.ry reared.flies. We used.observat.onal experim.nt. t.at.allowed.us t. d.t.rm.ne if: (i) m.t.ng pairs were aggregat.d.or nonaggregat.d. (ii) m.t.ng syst.m.was resource or nonresource based. (iii) flies ut.lized.possible land.6}rks (t.ll t.ees over short. as m.t.-rend.zvous sit.s; and.(iv) m.les called.fem.les from.m.le-d.m.nat.d.leks. We record.d.nearly 250 Bact.ocera t.yoni m.t.ng pairs across all experim.nt., revealing t.at. (i) m.t.ng pairs were aggregat.d. (ii) m.t.ng nearly always occurred.in t.ll t.ees over short. (iii) m.t.ng was nonresource based. and.(iv) t.at.m.les and.fem.les arrived.at.t.e m.t.-rend.zvous sit. t.get.er wit. no evid.nce t.at.m.les preced.d.fem.les. Bact.ocera neohum.ralis copulat.ons were m.ch m.re infrequent.(only 30 m.t.ng pairs in t.t.l), but.for t.ose pairs t.ere was a sim.lar preference for t.ll t.ees and.no evid.nce of a resource-based.m.t.ng syst.m. Som. aspect. of Bact.ocera t.yoni m.t.ng behavior align wit. t.eoret.cal expect.t.ons of a lekking syst.m. but.ot.ers d. not. Unt.l evid.nce for unequivocal fem.le choice can be provid.d.(as pred.ct.d.und.r a t.ue lek), t.e m.t.ng syst.m.ofBact.ocera t.yoni is best.d.scribed.as a nonresource based. aggregat.on syst.m.for which we also have evid.nce t.at.land.m.rking m.y be involved.
