Quench-tailored Al-doped V_(2)O_(5) nanomaterials for efficient aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries(ZIBs)are regarded as a promising competition to lithium-ion batteries as energy storage devices,owing to their high safety and low ***,the development of high-performance ZIBs is largely hindered by the shortage of ideal cathode materials with high-rate capability and long-cycle ***,we address this bottleneck issue by the quenching-tailored surface chemistry of V_(2)O_(5) cathode *** rapid quenching from high temperatures,Al ions are doped into V_(2)O_(5) lattice(Al-V_(2)O_(5))and abundant oxygen vacancies are formed on the surface/nearsurface,which facilitate the desired rapid electron *** density functional theory(DFT)simulations elucidate that the doping of Al ions into V_(2)O_(5) remarkably reduces the Zn^(2+)-diffusion barriers and improves the electrical conductivity of V_(2)O_(5).As a proof-of-concept application,the thus-optimized AlV_(2)O_(5) cathode delivers a superior specific capacity of 532 m Ah g^(-1) at 0.1 A g^(-1) and a long-cycling life with76%capacity retention after 5000 cycles,as well as a good rate *** work provides not only a novel strategy for tuning the surface chemistry of V_(2)O_(5) to boost the Zn^(2+)storage but also a general pathway of modifying metal oxides with improved electrochemical performance.

Monte Carlo Study of CO-NO Catalytic Surface Reaction Including CO-CO Repulsion

The CO-NO reaction on a catalytic surface is studied by using Langmuir-Hinshclwood thermal mechanism with Monte Carlo computer simulation. In this model, a novel concept of CO CO repulsion is introduced, which has experimental evidence due to the formation of dipoles when these molecules are chemisorbed on the surface. The system is investigated by applying two approaches of NO dissociation. In the first ***, NO always decomposes into N and O before adsorption on the surface, In the second case, NO adsorbs on the surface molecularly and then dissociates into N and O if a vacancy is present in its adjacent neighbourhood. The steady state reactive window （i.e. the continuous production of CO2 and N2） is obtained only with the diffusion of N-atoms on the surface, which extends with CO-CO repulsion in the first, case. Itowever, in the second case, reactive window is obtained with CO-CO repulsion alone, The reactive window width in this case is reasonably large. The first-order phase transition is eliminated in both the cases with CO-CO repulsion.

The present study deals with the depositional facies, diagenetic processes and sequence stratigraphy of the shallow marine carbonates of the Samana Suk Formation, Kohat Basin, in order to elucidate its reservoir quality. The Samana Suk Formation consists of thin to thick-bedded, oolitic, bioclastic, dolomitic and fractured limestone. Based on the integration of outcrop, petrographic and biofacies analyses, the unit is thought to have been deposited on a gentle homoclinal ramp in peritidal, lagoonal and carbonate shoal settings. Frequent variations in microfacies based sea-level curve have revealed seven Transgressive Systems Tracts(TSTs) and six Regressive Systems Tracts(RSTs). The unit has undergone various stages of diagenetic processes, including mechanical and chemical compaction, cementation,micritization, dissolution and dolomitization. The petrographic analyses show the evolution of porosity in various depositional and diagenetic phases. The fenestral porosity was mainly developed in peritidal carbonates during deposition,while the burial dissolution and diagenetic dolomitization have greatly enhanced the reservoir potential of the rock unit, as is further confirmed by the plug porosity and permeability analyses. The porosities and permeabilities were higher in shoal facies deposited in TSTs, as compared to lagoonal and peritidal facies, except for the dolomite in mudstone, deposited during RSTs. Hence good, moderate and poor reservoir potential is suggested for shoal, lagoonal and peritidal facies,respectively.

Throughfall and stemflow chemical dynamics of Satoyama, a traditional secondary forest system under threat in Japan

The term 'Satoyama' refers to traditional and unique secondary forests in Japan that occupy intermediate zones between villages ('sato') and hills or mountains ('yama'). Satoyama landscapes help sustain ecosystem services and the diversity of secondary natural environments. As Japan relies more heavily on foreign timber imports, the traditional role of Satoyama in providing forest products has diminished, and this has led to their abandonment and poor management. The chemical behavior of cations, anions, and dissolved organic matter in throughfall and stemflow from one such threatened Satoyama system in central Japan was investigated. From autumn to winter, the atmospheric deposition of sulfates and nitrates was 2.5–6.0 times higher compared to the amounts in summer due to the intrusion of air masses from the Asian continent. The dissolved organic matter in the throughfall and stemflow was composed mainly of humic substances and protein derivatives. The deposition fluxes of dissolved organic carbon from throughfall (7.31–10.1 g m^(−2) a^(−1)) and stemflow (1.79–3.84 g m^(−2) a^(−1)) in this study were within ranges seen in temperate forests in previous studies. The deposition flux of sulfates was low compared to that in other forest types because canopy interaction was lower, suggesting higher canopy openness than in primary forests. If a shift from a mixed species Satoyama forest to a conifer-dominated forest occurs after the mass mortality of oak, the deposition flux of dissolved organic carbon and K^(+) might decrease by 33% and 62%, respectively, while NO_(3)^(−) might increase by 20%. In the near future, the degradation of Satoyama landscapes might change the levels of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen loads, resulting in imbalances in river-ocean linkages affecting forested catchments and aquatic ecosystems in Japan.

Temporal trends in organophosphorus pesticides use and concentrations in river water in Japan, and risk assessment

We reviewed organophosphorus pesticide use in Japan between 1982 and 2016 using data from the National Institute of Environmental Studies. Organophosphorus pesticide concentrations in river water throughout Japan were taken from the literature, and risk assessments were performed for some organophosphorus pesticides based on risk quotients and hazard quotients. Assessments were performed for 20 common pesticides,including insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides. The amounts used decreased in the order: insecticides > herbicides > fungicides. Organophosphorus insecticide and fungicide use have decreased over the last four decades, but organophosphorus herbicide use has increased. During this period, annual organophosphorus pesticide use was the highest for chlorpyrifos(105,263 tons/year) and the lowest for glyphosate-sodium(8 tons/year). The ecotoxicological risk assessment indicated that diazinon and fenitrothion posed strong risks to the Japanese aquatic environment, and chlorpyrifos and malathion have moderate risks. None of the pesticides that were assessed posed significant risks to *** use of organophosphorus pesticides in Japan may cause strong risks to aquatic environments. These risks should be reassessed periodically.

Literature Review of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in South Asian Populations

Background: South Asians have been recently identified as having rapidly rising incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). There is a paucity of data regarding the phenotypic and genotypic associations of IBD among the patients of this region. Due to the rising disease prevalence, a study on South Asian population can disclose more information about the etiopathogenetic causes of the disease. Methods: Here we did a review article of IBD among South Asians. In order to get a correct sense of factors associated with the disease, we have reviewed approximately 150 articles through the PubMed search and google scholar. Results: We attempted to find temporal trends of IBD among south Asian population, compared phenotype and genotype of IBD among South Asians and western patients and looked at the patterns of IBD presentation in different countries of South Asia. We have also reviewed the differences in the incidence of IBD among South Asian immigrants and discussed the treatment challenges of IBD among this special population. Conclusion: We identified that both patients in South Asia as well as South Asian patients living in Western countries are at greater risk for all types of IBD. This geographical region provides an opportunity for revealing possible etiopathogenetic factors. Further population-based studies, comparison of studies in South Asians and immigrants from South Asian countries, and large-scale biologic treatment models need to be accelerated to control the disease burden in South Asians, as well as to achieve reduced burden globally.

Biogeographical note on Antarctic microforae: Endemism and cosmopolitanism

This study deals with the biogeography of Antarctic microflora （Antarctica acts as best model to study microbial biogeography） such as cyanobacteria and selected halophiles with special emphasis on Halomonas variabilis and Bacillus *** are known to be resistant not only to salt stress,but also to extreme temperature,pressure,and aridity and they are capable of surviving in harsh environments such as polar regions,deep-sea habitats,and *** microbes are known to be resistant to hostile environmental conditions,and are capable of surviving in harsh *** group has isolated 444 strains belonging to 28 genera of halophiles from various environments around the *** 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that many of the isolated strains from geographically distant habitats having different environmental conditions,were closely related to each other,with some strains possessing 100％ identical *** possessing survival mechanism such as spore formation are usually *** genus Halomonas is represented by potentially endemic strains and the ubiquitous ***,while spore-forming *** showed cosmopolitan *** potentially endemic （moderate endemicity that is regional and/or continental distribution） strain was reported from Syowa station,East Antarctica,and Mario Zucchelli station,West Antarctica,which are geographically separated by 3000 ***,15 strains having 100％ similarity with *** were considered *** results of this work provide support for the middle-ground model that some microbes have moderate endemicity and others have cosmopolitan *** results will contribute to a greater understanding of microbial biogeography with special emphasis on Antarctica.
