A collection of 167 Thai and exotic rice accessions was subjected for evaluation of genetic diversity and assessment of relationship by simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Among a total of 49 SSR markers, 13 markers distributing over 12 rice chromosomes showed clear polymorphic band patterns, and they were selected for genetic assessment. A total of 110 alleles were detected with an average of 8.46 alleles per locus. The averages of gene diversity, heterozygosity and polymorphic information content were 0.59, 0.02 and 0.56, respectively. The unweighted-pair group method with arithmetic averages (UPGMA) clustering analysis was performed for genetic distance, and phylogenetic tree was constructed. The result showed that this rice collection was divided into two major groups, classified as japonica and indica subspecies. Within the japonica group, temperate japonica and tropical japonica subgroups can be clearly separated. Three-dimensional principal component analysis projection and model-based population structure analysis showed consistent clustering results with two major groups of UPGMA analysis, supporting the classification of japonica and indica subspecies. The indica allelic frequency was also investigated to provide an indicative guide for breeders to overcome the practical problems on sterility of inter-subspecies hybrid offspring. This rice collection and information obtained in this study will be useful for rice breeding programs.

AIM:To determine the pattern and distribution of colonic diverticulosis in Thai adults.METHODS:A review of the computerized radiology database for double contrast barium enema(DCBE)in Thai adults was performed at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital,Mahidol University,Bangkok,Thailand.Incomplete studies and DCBE examinations performed in non-Thai individuals were excluded.The pattern and distribution of colonic diverticulosis detected during DCBE studies from June 2009 to October 2011 were determined.The occurrence of solitary cecal diverticulum,rectal diverticulum and giant diverticulum were reported.Factors influencing the presence of colonic diverticulosis were evaluated.RESULTS:A total of 2877 suitable DCBE examinations were retrospectively reviewed.The mean age of patients was 59.8±14.7 years.Of these patients,1778(61.8%)were female and 700(24.3%)were asymptomatic.Colonic diverticulosis was identified in 820patients(28.5%).Right-sided diverticulosis(641 cases;22.3%)was more frequently reported than left-sided diverticulosis(383 cases;13.3%).Pancolonic diverticulosis was found in 98 cases(3.4%).The occurrence of solitary cecal diverticulum,rectal diverticulum and giant diverticulum were 1.5%(42 cases),0.4%(12 cases),and 0.03%(1 case),respectively.There was no significant difference in the overall occurrence of colonic diverticulosis between male and female patients(28.3%vs 28.6%,P=0.85).DCBE examinations performed in patients with some gastrointestinal symptoms revealed the frequent occurrence of colonic diverticulosis compared with those performed in asymptomatic individuals(29.5%vs 25.3%,P=0.03).Change in bowel habit was strongly associated with the presence of diverticulosis(a relative risk of 1.39;P=0.005).The presence of diverticulosis was not correlated with age in symptomatic patients or asymptomatic individuals(P>0.05).CONCLUSION:Colonic diverticulosis was identified in28.5%of DCBE examinations in Thai adults.There was no association between the presence of diverticulosis and gender or age.

Evaluation of Soil Water Management Difference in Mango Orchards between Thailand and Japan

The objective of this study is to evaluate the difference of the soil water management in mango orchards between the varieties of “Irwin” in Japanand “Nam Dok Mai” inThailand. Field observations were conducted in mango orchards in Okinawa, Japan and Phrao, Thailand to clarify the water management practices. Measurement of the hourly soil water content in Phrao indicated that the irrigation was scarce and the volumetric water content in the soil was maintained almost constant. in the flowering season. This can be the farmers’ practice for flower induction. After the flowering season, irrigation was frequent in order to produce the large fruit. In the harvest season, the soil water content was relatively high because of frequent irrigation and rainfall. In Okinawa, the volumetric water content was maintained at the same level in a relatively deep layer. The result at the5 cmdepth indicated that the farmer carefully controlled the soil water content. In the flowering season, the soil water content was relatively low. While the orchard was managed empirically, the volumetric water content near the soil surface was maintained over 25% during the harvest season. This result indicates that the farmer performed the good soil water management to enhance mango fruit quality even without technical measurement. A numerical model describing the soil water and heat transfers was introduced to predict the farmer’s empirical soil water management in Okinawa. Using the meteorological data in March 2010, the irrigation regime was predicted using the simulated soil water content. In the flowering season, the farmer irrigated when the soil surface water content reached 14%. Based on this criterion for the empirical soil water management, the simulation result indicated that the farmer irrigated four times in this period. The numerical model presented here can be useful for evaluating the differences in water management practices of local farmers.
