Holocene lake carbon sequestration, hydrological status and vegetation change, China

Lakes have received considerable attention as long-term sinks for organic carbon(C)at regional and global scales.Previ ous studies have focused on assessment and quantification of carbon sinks,and few have worked on the relationship be tween millennial-scale lake C sequestration,hydrological status and vegetation,which has important scientific signifi cance in improving our understanding of lake C stocks and storage mechanisms.Here,we present a comprehensive study of pollen records,organic geochemical proxies,lake-level records,sediment accumulation rate(SAR)and organic C accu mulation rate(CAR)in China since the Holocene.We also include numerical climate classification and lake-level simula tions,to investigate variations of lake C sequestration,hydrological status and vegetation during the Holocene.Results in dicate that the evolution of lake C accumulation showed an out-of-phase relationship with hydrological status and vegeta tion in China.Lake C accumulation exhibited an overall trend of increasing from the early to late Holocene in response to gradually increasing terrestrial organic matter input.However,China as a whole experienced the densest vegetation cover in the middle Holocene,corresponding to the mid-Holocene optimum of a milder and wetter climate.Optimal hydrologi cal conditions were asynchronous in China;for example,early Holocene in Asian monsoon dominated areas,and middle Holocene in westerlies controlled regions.Our synthesis indicated that climate change was the main factor controlling the long-term variability in lake C accumulation,hydrologic conditions,as well as vegetation,and human influences were usu ally superimposed on the natural trends.

A paleo-hydrological simulation experiment and its verification in an inland basin

Hydrological circulation,as the most basic material cycle and active natural phenomenon on earth,exerts a significant in fluence on climate change.The mid-Holocene is an important period to better understand modern environmental change;however,little research has focused on its quantitative simulation of paleo-hydrological process.In this research,we first collected chronological evidence and sediment records from six Holocene sedimentary sections in the Shiyang River Ba sin to reconstruct the mid-Holocene environment and terminal paleo-lake area.Secondly,we comprehensively analyzed modern pollen combinations and their propagation characteristics in surface soil,air,river and lacustrine sediments in the Shiyang River Basin,and combined the pollen records,as well as quantitatively reconstructed the millennial-scale vegeta tion zones.Finally,based on the land-cover adjustment results during the mid-Holocene,we successfully used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT)model,a modern distributed hydrological watershed model,to simulate mid-Holocene runoff in the basin.Results show that the reconstructed climate in the basin was warmer and moister than that in recent times.Vegetation types in the mid-Holocene mainly consisted of sub-alpine shrub distributed between 2,550 m and 2,750 m,forest at an elevation of 2,550 2,750 m,steppe at an elevation of 1,550 2,150 m and desert steppe below 1,550 m.The up stream,midstream,downstream and average annual runoff of the mid-Holocene in the basin were 16.76×10^8 m^3,22.86×10^8 m^3,9.00×10^8 m^3 and 16.20×10^8 m^3 respectively,compared to 15.61×10^8 m^3 of modern annual runoff.Also,the area of terminal paleo-lake in the mid-Holocene was 628 km^2.Thus,this study provides a new quantitative method for paleo-hy drological simulation.

A continuous simulation of Holocene effective moisture change represented by variability of virtual lake level in East and Central Asia

The fluctuation of a single lake level is a comprehensive reflection of water balance within the basin, while the regional consistent fluctuations of lake level can indicate the change of regional effective moisture. Previous researches were mainly focused on reconstructing effective moisture by multiproxy analyses of lake sediments. We carried out a series of experiments, including a transient climate evolution model, a lake energy balance model and a lake water balance model to simulate continuous Holocene effective moisture change represented by variability of virtual lake level in East and Central Asia.The virtual lake level, area, water depth and salinity are not equivalent to actual values, but we estimated relative changes of the regional effective moisture. We also explored the driving mechanisms of effective moisture change in different geographical regions. Our results indicated that gradually falling effective moisture during the Holocene in northern China was due to the combined effects of high lake evaporation caused by longwave and shortwave radiation, and low precipitation caused by reductions of summer solar insolation. A decline in effective moisture through the Holocene in the Tibetan Plateau and southern Central Asia resulted from decreased precipitation because of the weakening of the Asian summer monsoon. Increased precipitation induced by the strengthening of the westerly circulation contributed to the effective moisture rise during the Holocene in northern Central Asia.

通过对祁连山地区典型内流河——石羊河、丰乐河、石油河和布哈河流域表土及终端湖全新世剖面沉积物中粒度指标的分析和对比,结果表明:1)流域表土粒径随海拔变化具有明显的空间分异特征,大致以河流出山口海拔为界分为上下游两部分,除石油河外,上游以粉砂组分为主,粒度频率曲线表现为河流沉积的双峰特征,粒径波动较小并随海拔有降低趋势,反映河流初始水动力较强并逐渐减弱;下游以砂组分为主,粒度频率曲线具有风成沉积特征,指示干旱化趋势,粒径变化幅度和频率大,表明受人类活动影响强烈;2)终端湖剖面沉积物粒度显示了全新世以来复杂的干湿变化,在约3 cal.ka B.P.之后均出现粒径增大波动增大的现象,指示不同程度的干旱化,在1~3 cal.ka B.P.之间出现人类活动的影响并逐渐加剧;3)基于流域表土粒度指标现代过程分析表明祁连山内流河流域终端湖剖面粒度指标可以在一定程度上指示流域干湿变化并识别人类活动强度,区域环境在长期干旱化的背景下受到人类活动的强烈干扰。

Global closed basins,occupying almost one fifth of the world's land area,spatially coincide with arid and semiarid areas.Paleoclimatic proxies can indicate basin-wide environmental change and human activity.However,previous studies have not approached the use of proxies in the same way to reconstruct natural and anthropogenic processes at regional and global scales.Here we present a regional study to investigate the basic processes of paleoclimatic proxies,from a typical closed-basin system in arid China.We use multiple paleoclimatic proxies of surface samples and sediments,as well as groundwater and sediment ages to study environmental change and human activity.We then establish a dataset for paleoclimatic proxies from global closed basins and do a numerical analysis on it.Regional studies verify that human activity greatly impacts paleoclimatic proxies,especially with regard to surface samples,as well as groundwater age,but Holocene sediments are less affected.Results from global studies indicate that the major changing trend of the wet/dry status of closed basins is associated with the movement of the westerly jet streams controlled by long-term changes in winter insolation.There is an abrupt change between 1800 AD and 1900 AD,according to a numerical synthesis of paleoclimatic proxies from global closed basins,which can be linked to human impact.We suggest this time period can be considered as a start point for the Anthropocene based on the sedimentary evidence of closed basins,globally.

应用GIS技术研究了"引江济太"对太湖北部底质与水质总磷(TP)浓度的影响。研究结果表明,2014—2019年,调水北部沿线4个点位底质TP浓度降幅为59.8%~80.5%;不同点位的水质TP浓度变化存在差异,入湖口点位下降14.1%,沿线其他点位分别上升37.4%、38.6%和45.0%。从空间分布来看,太湖水质TP始终呈明显的"西高东低"分布特点,但底质TP的分布未显示出该类规律。望亭水利枢纽调水情况与入湖口5#点位底质TP浓度呈一定程度的正相关,在调水入湖水量大于出湖水量的年份,5#点位底质TP浓度会偏高。"引江济太"会对太湖北部调水沿线,特别是入湖口附近水域的TP含量产生较大影响,并通过水流迁移与底质再悬浮释放影响下游水域。如何降低望虞河及周边支流的入湖泥沙量将是今后开展科学调水、保障贡湖水源地水质安全的重点研究方向之一。
