Emerging and re-emerging human infectious diseases:A systematic review of the role of wild animals with a focus on public health impact

Infectious diseases continue to impose unpredictable burdens on global health and economies, a subject that requires constant research and updates. In this sense, the objective of the present article was to review studies on the role of wild animals as reservoirs and/or dispersers of etiological agents of human infectious diseases in order to compile data on the main wild animals and etiological agents involved in zoonotic outbreaks. A systematic review was carried out using PRISMA guidelines, using the PubMed, Scopus and SciELO platforms as data banks. The descriptors used were "zoonosis", "human infectious diseases" and "wild animals". The results show that wild animals(mainly bats, birds and primates) play an important role in the dissemination of etiological agents(mainly viruses, as a new coronavirus called 2019 Novel Coronavirus) in extensive geographic regions. Moreover, these wild animal organisms can act as the site for essential biotic synergy among several pathogenic microorganisms, promoting a higher rate of adaptation, mutation and even genetic recombination, with consequent stimulation of new strains and subtypes, inducing new infectious agents with unknown virulent potential. In conclusion, the monitoring of these diseases and adequate preparation for possible epidemics and pandemics are fundamental conditions for the mitigation of their future impact. The zoonotic threat of these etiological agents and the impact on public health can be enormous as shown by the ongoing epidemic of 2019 novel coronavirus(2019-nCoV) infections.

Bifurcaria bifurcata is a seaweed of the Order Fucales(Ochrophyta,Phaeophyceae)that can be found all year round along the Portuguese Atlantic *** it is considered edible in some countries,its biotechnological potential has not yet been assessed in detail and here we report its antimicrobial potential against human dermatophyte *** samples were harvested from Baleal Island(Peniche,Portugal)harvested in winter(BbPe);from Aguda Beach(Arcozelo,Vila Nova de Gaia,Portugal),harvested in autumn(BbAg)and a sample obtained by culturing the Aguda sample under laboratory conditions(BbLC).A broth macrodilution assay was applied to determine the MIC(minimum inhibitory concentration)and MLC(minimum lethal concentration)of the *** *** show that the BbPe MeOH extracts were the most effective and had higher antifungal activity against all the tested dermatophyte strains than the BbLC and BaAg extracts[Epidermophyton floccosum FF9(100–200μg/mL MIC;200μg/mL MLC),Microsporum canis FF1(400μg/mL MIC;≥400μg/mL MLC),Trichophyton mentagrophytes FF7(100μg/mL MIC;>800μg/mL MLC),*** CECT 2908(800μg/mL MIC;≥800μg/mL MLC),*** *** CECT 2958(800μg/mL MIC;≥800μg/mL MLC),*** CECT 2794(200μg/mL MIC;≥400μg/mL MLC)].In fact,only *** FF9 was sensitive to BbAg and BbLC MeOH *** our knowledge,this is the first report of antifungal activity of *** against human dermatophyte fungi.

WAXD and FTIR Studies of Electron Beam Irradiated Biodegradable Polymers

Poly（L-lactic acid）（PLLA） and poly（e-caprolactone）（PCL） have been receiving much attention lately due to their biodegradability in human body as well as in the soil, also due to their biocompatibility, environmentally friendly characteristics and non-toxicity. Morphology of biodegradable polymers affects the rate of their biodegradation. A polymer that has high degree of crystallinity will degrade at a slower rate due to the inherent increased stability. PCL homopolymer crosslinking degree increases with increasing doses of high energy radiation. On the other hand, the irradiation ofPLLA homopolymer promotes mainly chain-scissions at doses below 250 kGy. In the present work, twin screw extruded films of PLLA and PCL biodegradable homopolymers and 50：50 （w：w） blend were electron beam irradiated using electron beam accelerator Dynamitron （E = 1.5 MeV） from Radiation Dynamics, Inc. at doses in the range of 50 kGy to 103 kGy in order to evaluate the effect of electron beam radiation. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction （WAXD） patterns of non irradiated and irradiated samples were obtained using a diffractometer Rigaku Denki Co. Ltd., Multiflex model; and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR） spectra was obtained using a NICOLET 4700, attenuated total reflectance （ATR） technique. By WAXD patterns of as extruded non irradiated and irradiated PLLA it was verified broad diffusion peaks corresponding to amorphous polymer. There was a slight increase of the mean crystallite size of PCL homopolymer with increasing radiation dose. PCL crystalline index （CI） decreased with radiation dose above 500 kGy. But then, PLLA CI increased with radiation dose above 750 kGy. From another point of view, PLLA presence on the 50：50 blend did not interfere on the observed mean crystallite size increase up to 250 kGy. Susceptibility to Fluconazole and Ketoconazole of Candida spp. Isolated from Primary and Episodic Vulvovaginites by E-Test (São Paulo, SP, Brazil)

Purpose: To evaluate the profile of in vitro susceptibility of yeasts isolated from cases of primary and espisodic vulvovaginitis to two antifungal agents. Methods: 40 Candida isolates from episodes of vulvovaginal candidiasis were identified by classic methodologies. The susceptibility testing of the in vitro fluconazole and ketoconazole activity against the isolates was accessed by E-test. Results: C. albicans was the most common species identified in 70% of the occurrences followed by C. glabrata (20%), C. tropicalis (7.5%), and C. guilliermondii (2.5%). In the susceptibility profile to antifungal agents, 12.5% and 16.7% of the isolates obtained from primary and episodic vulvovaginal candidiasis were resistant to fluconazole, respectively. To ketoconazole, we found that 6.25% and 12.5% of the isolates respectively from primary vulvovaginal candidiasis (PVVC) and episodic vulvovaginal candidiasis (EVVC) had high MIC values. Conclusions: E-test is a reliable method for the susceptibility testing of Candida spp. due to its simplicity, reproducibility, and lack of specialized equipment. Resistant strains and non-albicans species were verified more in cases of EVVC than in PVVC. Clinical and mycological cure of patients with episodic vulvovaginal candidiasis or complicated cases occurred after prolonged treatment and sometimes with multiple antifungals use.

Application of surface plasmon resonance imaging technique for i PSCs identification

Induced pluripotent stem cells （iPSCs） are an attractive cell source for regenerative medicine through cell therapy or drug screening. But application of iPSCs in regenerative medicine requires rapid and accurate charac- terization of iPSCs. Here, we demonstrate the detection of multiple antigens present in iPSC lysate using rapid, label- free surface plasmon resonance imaging （SPRi） assay. Validation of pluripotency is an important aspect of iPSC research. In this study, we fabricated antibody array against pluripotency biomarkers and found that our array suc- cessfully detect corresponding antigens in stem cell lysate. Each antibody recognized its specific antigens presented in iPSC lysates and a certain degree of variability was observed in comparison with other cell lysates. The results suggested that SPRi is a versatile technology feasible for the detection of multiple antigens presented in iPSC lysate. Further extension of this method may be applied in the characterization and high-throughput biomarker profiling of iPSCs.

Acute renal injury after partial hepatectomy

Currently, partial hepatectomy is the treatment of choice for a wide variety of liver and biliary conditions. Among the possible complications of partial hepatectomy, acute kidney injury(AKI) should be considered as an important cause of increased morbidity and postoperative mortality. Difficulties in the data analysis related to postoperative AKI after liver resections are mainly due to the multiplicity of factors to be considered in the surgical patients, moreover, there is no consensus of the exact definition of AKI after liver resection in the literature, which hampers comparison and analysis of the scarce data published on the subject. Despite this multiplicity of risk factors for postoperative AKI after partial hepatectomy, there are main factors that clearly contribute to its occurrence. First factor relates to large blood losses with renal hypoperfusion during the operation, second factor relates to the occurrence of post-hepatectomy liver failure with consequent distributive circulatory changes and hepatorenal syndrome. Eventually, patients can have more than one factor contributing to post-operative AKI, and frequently these combinations of acute insults can be aggravated by sepsis or exposure to nephrotoxic drugs.

Increasing the detail of European land use/cover data by combining heterogeneous data sets

Data on land use and land cover(LULC)are a vital input for policy-relevant research,such as modelling of the human population,socioeconomic activities,transportation,environment,and their *** Europe,CORINE Land Cover has been the only data set covering the entire continent consistently,but with rather limited spatial *** data sets have provided much better detail,but either have covered only a fraction of Europe(*** Atlas)or have been thematically restricted(*** High Resolution Layers).In this study,we processed and combined diverse LULC data to create a harmonised,ready-to-use map covering 41 *** doing so,we increased the spatial detail(from 25 to one hectare)and the thematic detail(by seven additional LULC classes)compared to the CORINE Land ***,we decomposed the class‘Industrial and commercial units’into‘Production facilities’,‘Commercial/service facilities’and‘Public facilities’using machine learning to exploit a large database of points of *** overall accuracy of this thematic breakdown was 74%,despite the confusion between the production and commercial land uses,often attributable to noisy training data or mixed land *** learnt from this exercise are discussed,and further research direction is proposed.

Entropy model to assess sediment resuspension probability and trap efficiency of small dams

In the Brazilian drylands, there are tens of thousands of small dams. Despite their paramount importance to the rural population, they are rarely monitored. Water demand increases with time while, simultaneously, siltation reduces reservoir water capacity and availability. Reservoir siltation models are, therefore, mandatory to manage the numerous ungauged small dams in these *** objective of the current study is to improve sediment trap efficiency(TE) modeling by including resuspension as a key probabilistic process. The Shannon entropy was used to estimate the sediment resuspension probability, which was merged with the Camp model and generated the RETSED entropy model. To validate the RETSED model, an experimental check dam(ECD, 300 m3), located in the Gilbu es desertification site, Brazil, was monitored hourly during one hydrological year(July 2018-July 2019). Measurements show that the annual volumetric decline of the check dam was 12%; and that the average trap efficiency equaled 86%. Only 9.5% of the hourly sediment concentration outflow exceeded the average plus one standard deviation, showing that the reservoir is well mixed; a fact which highlights the relevance of the resuspension process. Three empirical models failed to mimic the experimental results: Churchill(TE = 99%), Brune(TE = 75%), and Maryland(TE = 94%). According to the RETSED entropy model, the resuspension probability during the experiment was 10%and TE = 81%, a value only 6% below the measured one. The Camp model simulated TE = 89%, only 3%higher than the measured value, but confirmed the Camp model’s tendency to overestimate TE due to a disregard of resuspension. The deterministic model showed low sensitivity concerning the hydrodynamic effects, whereas the entropy formulation proved to be more consistent with physical behavior: the resuspension probability clearly increased and trap efficiency decreased with rising reservoir discharge.
