Helicobacter species sequences in liver samples from patients with and without hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM:Only a minority of patients carrying a defined viral aetiologic agent develop cirrhosis and ultimately hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),the mechanism underlying the worsening is still *** infection by Helicobacter hepaticus in mice causes chronic hepatitis and HCC and recently,more Helicobacterspecies(Helicobacter spp.)have been detected in the liver of patients suffering from cholestatic diseases and HCC arising from non-cirrhotic *** investigated whether *** could be detected in the liver of patients with cirrhosis and HCC compared to subjects with metastasis to liver from colon cancer. METHODS:Twenty-three liver samples from patients operated upon for HCC superimposed on hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related cirrhosis and 6 from patients with resected metastases from colorectal cancer,were tested by polymerase chain reaction for presence of genomic 16S rRNA of Helicobacter genus using specific *** sequencing and cag A gene analysis were also performed. RESULTS:Genornic sequences of Helicobacter *** found in 17 of 20(85%)liver samples from patients with HCC and in 2 of 6 samples from patients with liver metastasis. In three samples of the first group the result was uncertain. Hpyloriwas revealed in 16 out of 17 positive samples and Helicobacter pullorum in the other. CONCLUSION:Helicobacter spp.,carcinogenic in mice, were found at a higher frequency in the liver of patients with HCV-related cirrhosis and HCC than those in patients without primary liver disease.

Design and Simulation of a Novel Pneumotronic System Aimed to the Investigation of Vascular Phenomena Induced by Limb Compression

Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (IPC) devices can be used to analyze the mechanisms underlying several vascular phenomena, such as hyperaemia. Commercial devices have limited dynamics and do not allow the delivery of customizable compressive pressure patterns, making the analysis of such phenomena difficult, which may require the application of long stimulations with low amplitude as well as fast compressions with higher pressure level. To overcome these issues, a novel pneumotronic device aimed to the investigation of the physiological effects induced by limb compressions is conceived and presented in this work. The design requirements of the system, capable of delivering customizable compressive patterns in the range 0 mmHg-200 mmHg, are outlined. The final prototype architecture is described, and a mathematical model of the entire system, also including the interaction between the device and the limb tissues, is proposed. The performance of the device was evaluated in several conditions by means of simulations, whose results were compared to the data collected from experimental trials in order to validate the model. The outcomes of both experimentation and simulation trials proved the effectiveness of the solution proposed. A possible employment of this device for the investigation of the rapid compression-induced hyperaemia is presented. Other potential applications concern the wide range of intermittent-pneumatic compression treatments.

Judicialization of Catalonian Language and Identity Politics

Since the adoption of the 1978 Spanish Constitution, the relationship between the Spanish State and the Catalonian autonomous region has been considerably strained. Originally, many remembered the dictatorship of Francisco franco （1936-1975）, when centralization was heavily imposed on all parts of the country, irrespectively of ethnicity, language or traditions. As the constitutional bargain （Title VIII of the 1978 Constitution） worked for smaller regions （Madrid） or poorer regions （Extremadura）, it did not pan out for an economic powerhouse as Catalonia. For over 30 years, Catalonian regional political parties （notably Convergencia e Unio） have held the balance of power within the Spanish parliamentary system. Autonomous regions were allowed to write their own ＂statutes＂, a sort of sub-national constitution subject to national approval. Anti-Spanish sentiment is running high in Catalonia, and a straw poll was conducted in 2014, as voters were asked if they wanted to remain part of the Spanish kingdom. Many Catalonians would sever all ties with Madrid while attempting to remain in the European Union, a move preemptively vetoed by the European Commission. Inevitably, more judicialization is expected, whether on a federal scenario （intergovemmental relations： who does what） or if secession ultimately happens and economic compensation becomes necessary. The ruling Popular Party is adamant to any concessions; left-wing parties are more open to nationalistic demands. But the strictly political negotiations between the Popular party and the Socialists （who favor federalism） are stalled and nationalism is being overplayed by regional forces. As political solutions seem to falter momentarily, Courts will experience more demands based on identity grounds.
