This paper argues that rather than looking to the past for a previously developed set of traditional values and virtues we should instead look to the past for ways of thinking about morality and ethics which may be found in the ＂tradition＂ and which may also be relevant for the contemporary situation. It examines the causes of the disconnection between traditional ways of thinking and the contemporary situation at two levels： the marginalization of morality and the disarray in ethics. Both aspects are found to be rooted in the emergence of the empirical scientific differentiation of consciousness. The paper then goes on to ask what resources in the tradition may be found to overcome the gap between ancient and modem, or traditional and contemporary, ways of thinking about morality and ethics. The contemporary relevance of the thought of Bernard Lonergan to this issue is examined.

AIM: Dieulafoy's lesion (DL) accounts for 1-5.8% of cases of acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB). Its mortality is high, approaching 20%, despite recent advances in endoscopic therapy. We aimed to report our experience in the treatment of ***: A retrospective case study of all patients with DL between January 1993 and January 2003 was done. Characteristics, treatment methods, success rates and 30-d mortality of the patients were analyzed. RESULTS: Thirty-six patients were noted to have DL in the study period. Thirty-three records were available for assessment in which 35 DL were identified. The median age of the patients was 67 years with male to female ratio of 5.6:1. Significant comorbidities existed in 69% of the patients. Eighty-nine percent of the DL was found at first endoscopy, three DL at laparotomy. Significant coexistent endoscopic findings existed in 23%. Hemostasis was achieved in 88% by using adrenaline injection, or in combination with heater probe application at first endoscopy. Four cases had re-bleeding, all were successfully treated endoscopically. The 30-d mortality rate was 23%.CONCLUSION: Successful endoscopic hemostasis could be achieved in 100% of cases of DL. The overall mortality may still remain high, mainly due to the comorbidities and age of these patients.

Fabrication of K-promoted iron/carbon nanotubes composite catalysts for the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis of lower olefins

K-promoted iron/carbon nanotubes composite（i.e., Fe K-OX） was prepared by a redox reaction between carbon nanotubes and K2FeO4followed by thermal treatments on a purpose as the Fischer–Tropsch catalyst for the direct conversion of syngas to lower olefins. Its catalytic behaviors were compared with those of the other two Fe-IM and Fe K-IM catalysts prepared by impregnation method followed by thermal treatments. The novel Fe K-OX composite catalyst is found to exhibit higher hydrocarbon selectivity,lower olefins selectivity and chain growth probability as well as better stability. The catalyst structureperformance relationship has been established using multiple techniques including XRD, Raman, TEM and EDS elemental mapping. In addition, effects of additional potassium into the Fe K-OX composite catalyst on the FTO performance were also investigated and discussed. additional potassium promoters further endow the catalysts with higher yield of lower olefins. These results demonstrated that the introduction method of promoters and iron species plays a crucial role in the design and fabrication of highly active,selective and stable iron-based composite catalysts for the FTO reaction.

Automated retrofit targeting of heat exchanger networks

The aim of this paper is to develop a novel heat exchanger network (HEN) retrofit method based on a new automated retrofit targeting (ART) algorithm. ART uses the heat surplus-deficit table (HSDT) in combination with the Bridge Retrofit concepts to generate retrofit bridges option, from which a retrofit design may be formulated. The HSDT is a tabular tool that shows potential for improved re-integration of heat source and sink streams within a HEN. Using the HSDT, retrofit bridges—a set of modifications that links a cooler to a heater to save energy—may be identified, quantified, and compared. The novel retrofit method including the ART algorithm has been successfully implemented in Microsoft ExcelTM to enable analysis of large-scale HENs. A refinery case study with 27 streams and 46 existing heat exchangers demonstrated the retrofit method’s potential. For the case study, the ART algorithm found 68903 feasible unique retrofit opportunities with a minimum 400 kW·unit−1 threshold for heat recovery divided by the number of new units. The most promising retrofit project required 3 new heat exchanger units to achieve a heat savings of 4.24 MW with a favorable annualised profit and a reasonable payback period.

Optically targeted electrochemical cell microscopy(OTECCM)was applied to measure electrocatalytic rates at individual Cu nanoparticles(NPs)under electrolyte conditions relevant to CO_(2) *** electrocatalytic responses from individual NPs were found to exhibit a wide variation in behavior,with significant NP-to-NP variations in the magnitude of electrocata-lytic currents and necessary overpotentials being *** of these quantities with metrics of NP size suggest no significant variations in the inherent electrocatalytic activity of the NPs with *** element simulations of diffusion in this system demonstrate the observed diffusion-limited currents are significantly smaller than expected,attributable to the presence of a significant amount of residual ligand on the surface of the Cu NPs,which were prepared via an organic phase *** results presented here further demonstrate the promise of techniques which employ correlated optical and electrochemical measurements,such as OTECCM,for studying electrocatalysis at individual NPs.

Spatial targeting evaluation of energy and environmental performance of waste-to-energy processing

Waste-to-energy supply chains are important potential contributors to minimising the environmental impacts of municipal solid waste by reducing the amounts of waste sent to landfill, as well as the fossil fuel consumption and environmental footprints. Accounting for the spatial and transport properties of the waste-to-energy supply chains is crucial for understanding the problem and improving the supply chain designs. The most significant challenge is the distributed nature of the waste generation and the household energy demands. The current work proposes concepts and a procedure for targeting the size of the municipal solid waste collection zone as the first step in the waste-to-energy supply chains synthesis. The formulated concepts and the provided case study reveal trends of reducing the net greenhouse gas savings and energy recovery by increasing the collection zone size. Population density has a positive correlation with the greenhouse gas saving and energy recovery performance. For smaller zone size the energy recovery from waste approaches and in some cases may surpass the energy spent on waste transportation. The energy recovery and greenhouse gas savings remain significant even for collection zones as large as 200 km2. The obtained trends are discussed and key directions for future work are proposed.

The PFC Sigma Cobalt Chrome Sigma (PFCSCC) was introduced in 2006, and represents further development of the PFC Sigma design aiming at reducing the problem of backside wear. To ensure that there were no significant early failures following the introduction of this knee system to our hospital in 2006, we prospectively identified all patients undergoing TKA with the PFCSCC over a one-year period. Clinical and demographic patient data, American Knee Society scores, Oxford Knee scores, SF-12 scores and radiographic data were recorded preoperatively and at three-year post surgery. 233 patients underwent 249 primary knee arthroplasties with the PFCSCC. Seven patients (eight TKAs) died before the last review and eight cases were lost to follow up. Mean age was 66.7 (range 34 - 80) with 47.6% male. Mean follow-up days were 1109 (range 741 to 1591). 5 (2.2%) were revised for infection with 1 revised for pain. The 3-year survival rate was 97.6% and 99.6% for aseptic failure. AKS 46.2 (0 - 95) was preoperatively 88.3 (17 - 100) with 3 years P 0.001. OKS 39.0 (22 - 53) was preoperatively 22.6 (12 - 53) with 3 years P 0.001. 17 of the 219 who had x-rays (8%) had radiolucent zones on x-ray. Our results demonstrate a good early aseptic survivorship of the PFCSCC at three years of 99.6%, combined with a good functional and objective improvement in our patients in three years.
