An Integrated Method for the Selection of Optimum Locations for Landfilling Utilizing GIS: A Case Study of the State of Kuwait

With the rise of urbanization, change in lifestyles, and food habits, the amount of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) has been rapidly increasing with the composition constantly changing. Landfilling is the common approach for waste management in Kuwait, and around 90% of municipal wastes are disposed in landfill sites. Therefore, this study focused on the integration of different methods for the process of allocating optimum sites for MSW landfills, in four main stages. The first stage focused on utilizing the gap analysis method for the identification of effective criteria for landfill site selection, by comparing the criteria in Kuwait with the World Bank guidelines, US EPA, and Australia EPA, to suggest the best criteria for landfill site selection. These criteria were applied in the second and third stages to determine suitable locations for landfill sites using the Geographical Information System (GIS). In the last stage, the suitable areas were evaluated by studying the socioeconomic aspects such as distance to waste generation center, the proximity of existing roads, and lifespan to select optimum locations for landfilling. The results indicated that only one site with a total area of 12 km2 was considered optimum for MSW landfill sites in Kuwait. Therefore, moderate suitability areas were indicated to support and provide decision makers with more options. The moderately suitable sites are also suitable for landfilling, but they need to be designed carefully in order to avoid negative impacts on the environment and human health. Therefore, we conclude that there is an urgent need to apply the integrated waste management system in Kuwait, as well as to develop a long-term strategic plan.

An energetic nano-fiber composite based on polystyrene and 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane fabricated via electrospinning technique

Electrospinning is a simple technique used to fabricate polymeric nano-fibrous *** nano-fibers have found a wide range of valuable applications in the biomedical ***,it has not been utilized with solid high explosives ***,the electrospinning technique has been used to fabricate polystyrene(PS)/1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane(RDX)composite *** governed electrospinning parameters,voltage,distance from the collector,flow rate,mandrel rotating speed,time,and solution concentration,that greatly affect the morphology of the obtained nanofibers were *** fabricated PS/RDX nano-fibers were characterized using scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffractometer(XRD),and Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR)*** impact and friction sensitivities of PS/RDX were also *** thermal behavior of the prepared composite and the pure materials were studied by the thermal gravimetric analysis technique(TGA).SEM results proved the fabrication of PS/RDX fibers in the nano-size via *** spectroscopy confirmed the existence of the characteristic functional groups of both PS and RDX in the composite *** sharp peaks showed the conversion of amorphous PS into crystalline shape via electrospinning and also confirmed the formation of PS/RDX *** PS fibers absorbed the heat and increased the onset decomposition of the pure RDX from 181.5 to 200.7℃in the case of PS/RDX ***,PS/RDX nano-fibers showed the relatively low impact and friction sensitivities of 100 J and 360 N *** results could introduce PS/RDX nanofibrous composite in the field of explosives detection with high levels of safety.

Serum Bilirubin as a Predictor of Coronary Artery Disease Severity in Patients Undergoing Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention

Introduction: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the most common causes of death worldwide. In 2010, about 7 out of total 53 million deaths were due to ischemic heart disease. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship of serum bilirubin level with the severity and complexity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in the patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Materials and Methods: 70 patients with STEMI who were undergoing primary PCI were included in the study. All the patients included in the study were subjected to full routine investigations and standard coronary angiographic projections. Total bilirubin level was measured and the patients were divided into two groups. Group 1 was with serum TB (and Group 2 was with serum TB (>1 mg/dl). Severity and complexity of coronary artery lesions will be assessed using Gensini score. Results: After PCI, the two studied groups were compared regarding the number of vessels affected by one and more than one vessel disease. Single vessel disease was frequent in Group 2 (71%) with significant p value (0.003). Cardiac enzymes (troponin I) was more in Group 1 (S. Bil value (0.02). Also (ALT, AST) were more in Group 1 (p value = 0.01). By comparing the 2 groups, there was a significant difference regarding (EF) between both which was less in Group 1 (*** 1), p value significance (0, 0001). Also GENSENI was more in Group 1 (*** 1) with mean (80.35 vs 34.71) and significant pvalue (0.0001). There was a highly significant negative correlation between serum bilirubin & GENSENI score (r = -0.762, p value 0.0001). Regarding the incidence of complications, incidence was more in Group 1 (*** 1), which means a significant difference between both groups with significant p value (0.0001). There was a significant negative correlation between serum bilirubin & incidence of complications (R = -0.38, pvalue 0.001). Silicon micromirrors with three-dimensional curvature enabling lensless efficient coupling of free-space light

Miniaturized optical benches process free-space light propagating in-plane with respect to the substrate and have a large variety of applications,including the coupling of light through an optical *** coupling efficiency is usually obtained using assembled micro-optical parts,which considerably increase the system cost and integration *** this work,we report a high coupling efficiency,monolithically integrated silicon micromirror with controlled three-dimensional(3D)curvature that is capable of manipulating optical beams propagating in the plane of the silicon *** on our theoretical modeling,a spherical micromirror with a microscale radius of curvature as small as twice the Gaussian beam Rayleigh range provides a 100%coupling efficiency over a relatively long optical path *** dimensionless parameters facilitates the elucidation of the role of key design parameters,including the mirror’s radii of curvature,independent of the wavelength.A micromachining method is presented for fabricating the 3D micromirror using fluorinated gas *** measured coupling efficiency was greater than 50%over a 200-mm optical path,compared to less than 10%afforded by a conventional flat micromirror,which was in good agreement with the *** the 3D micromirror,an optical cavity was formed with a round-trip diffraction loss of less than 0.4%,resulting in one order of magnitude enhancement in the measured quality factor.A nearly 100%coupling was also estimated when matching the sagittal and tangential radii of curvature of the presented micromirror’s *** reported class of 3D micromirrors may be an advantageous replacement for the optical lenses usually assembled in silicon photonics and optical benches by transforming them into real 3D monolithic systems while achieving wideband high coupling efficiency over submillimeter distances.

Cancer is cell fleeing from death by blocking the intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of cell death programs. In the present work, the experimental formula was designed to remove these blockers. It was applied on 120 Swiss albino mice which were inoculated intraperitoneally and subcutaneously with Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma cells;1 × (106) cell/mouse. The activity of the cell death programs of the tumor was detected by measuring the volume of Ascites fluid, counting the number of dead cancer cells, measuring the size of the tumor, detecting the positive reaction of caspase enzyme in cancer cells and presence of macrophages and apoptotic bodies in tumor tissue. The experimental formula succeeded in removing the blockers of the cell death program in cancer cells returning the cell death program to work again.
