Neurodegeneration and choroidal vascular features on OCT in the progression to advanced age-related macular degeneration

AIM:To quantify and compare longitudinal thickness changes of the ganglion cell complex(GCC)and the choroid in patients with different patterns of age-related macular degeneration(AMD)***:Retrospective cohort analysis of anonymized data from participants aged 50y or more and diagnosed with early/intermediate AMD in at least one eye(with no evidence of advanced AMD).A total of 64 participants were included from the Instituto de Retina de Lisboa(IRL)study(IPL/2022/MetAllAMD_EsTesL)and divided into 4 groups according to the Rotterdam classification for *** domain optical coherence tomography(sD-OCT)was used to assess and quantify GCC and choroid thickness at two time points(first visit vs last visit)with a minimum interval of ***:In the GCC inner ring,a thinner thickness(P=0.001)was observed in the atrophic AMD group(51.3±21.4μm)compared to the early AMD(84.3±11.5μm),intermediate AMD(77.6±16.1μm)and neovascular AMD(88.9±16.3μm)*** thickness quantification showed a generalized reduction in the central circle(P=0.002)and inner ring(P=0.001).slight reductions in retinal thickness were more accentuated in the inner ring in the atrophic AMD(-13%;PsION:The variation of the analyzed structures could be an indicator of risk of progression with neurodegenerative(GCC)or vascular(choroid)pattern in the intermediate and atrophic *** quantification of both structures can provide important information about the risk of disease progression in the early and intermediate stages but also for the evolution pattern into late stages(atrophic or neovascular).

Neurodegenerative diseases are a major public health challenge,mainly affecting the elderly population and compromising their cognitive,sensory,and motor ***,available therapies focus on alleviating symptoms and slowing the progression of these conditions,but they do not yet offer a definitive *** this scenario,terpenes emerge as promising natural alternatives due to their neuroprotective *** compounds can reduce the formation of protein aggregates,neutralize free radicals,and inhibit pro-inflammatory enzymes,which are crucial factors in the development of neurodegenerative *** addition,terpenes also play an important role in the regulation and remodeling of the extracellular matrix,a key target for improving neuronal *** such as linalool,pinene,and eugenol,among others,have potential therapeutic effects by modulating inflammatory and oxidative stress processes,the main factors that contribute to the progression of these *** suggest that these compounds act on signaling pathways that regulate the extracellular matrix,improving neuronal integrity and,consequently,cognitive and motor *** work aims to review the potential of terpenes in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders,with emphasis on their ability to regulate oxidative stress and inflammation,as well as to remodel the extracellular *** interaction between these mechanisms points to the promising use of terpenes as an innovative and natural therapeutic approach to combat these diseases.

Forging CLIL Teacher Identities in Kazakhstan: Developmental Pathways of Two University Teachers

As universities in Kazakhstan continue to address the challenges that come with developing English-medium instruction (EMI) programs, university science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (sTEM) teachers need to develop capacities to teach in English, while their English teacher counterparts need to develop content-specific pedagogical knowledge. Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) pedagogies, defined as the integration of both language and content curricular goals, have emerged as a vehicle to facilitate this development for both types of teachers. However, what it means to be a CLIL teacher may vary considerably as teachers leverage their professional knowledge and personal experiences. We, therefore, explore teachers’ conceptions of CLIL and how their disciplinary, linguistic, and pedagogical backgrounds enable or burden them to forge a “CLIL teacher” identity. This qualitative study illustrates the salient points of the journeys taken by two university teachers, one a specialist in oil and gas, the other an English teacher and teacher educator. Drawing on extended one-on-one interviews, we present two teachers’ experiences through a series of CLIL-informed workshops. Using a multidisciplinary analytical framework, we map the ways in which the two teacher participants negotiate their identities in relation to CLIL. The findings highlight the importance of understanding teacher experiences, particularly their language learning backgrounds, attitudes toward supporting student learning, and relationships with their colleagues as they work to adapt to teaching English and sTEM subjects in university EMI contexts.

Communities of saprobic fungi on leaf litter of Vismia guianensis in remnants of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

We examined the mycobiota associated with Vismia guianensis leaf litter in three Atlantic Forest remnants of Brazil＇ s semiarid region. Among the study sites, two remnants were protected forest reserves, whereas the third was influenced by major anthropogenic activities. Eighteen litter samples were collected in wet and dry seasons and were processed by particle filtration technique. A total of 4750 fungal isolates of 142 taxa were identified. species richness was higher in litter samples collected during wet season. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling multivariate analysis showed differences in the composition of fungal communities among the sampling sites and the seasons. Analysis of similarity showed that the differences were statistically significant （R = 0.85; P = 0.0001）. Our findings revealed that spatial and temporal heterogeneity, and human activities had significant impacts on the saprobic fungi of V. guianensis leaf litter.

Long-term response to avelumab and management of oligoprogression in Merkel cell carcinoma:A case report

BACKGROUND Merkel cell carcinoma(MCC)is a rare and aggressive cutaneous neuroendocrine neoplasia,with high risk of recurrence and metastasis and poor *** checkpoint inhibitors,like the anti-programmed death-ligand 1 agent avelumab,were recently approved for the treatment of advanced ***,herein,report the first case of advanced MCC with oligoprogression managed with avelumab and local radical *** sUMMARY A 61-year-old man was presented to the hospital with sporadic fever and an exudative malodorous mass(10 cm of diameter),located on the right gluteal *** final diagnosis was MCC,cT4N3M1c(AJCC,TNM staging 8th edition,2017),with invasion of adjacent muscle,in-transit metastasis,and bone *** started chemotherapy(cisplatin and etoposide),and after six cycles,the main tumor increased,evidencing disease *** months later,the patient started second line treatment with avelumab(under an early access program).After two cycles of treatment,the lesion started to decrease,achieving a major *** progression was documented after 16 ***,as the tumor became resectable,salvage surgery was performed,while keeping the systemic treatment with *** the patient developed bilateral pneumonia,immunotherapy was *** than 2.5 years after surgery(last 19 mo without systemic therapy),the patient maintains complete local response and stable bone *** This report highlights the efficacy and long-term response of avelumab on the management of a chemotherapy resistant advanced MCC,with evidence of oligoprogression,in combination with local radical treatment.

Advancing CLIL Approaches in EMI settings Through International Collaboration: An Introduction

CLIL, which stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning, is an instructional approach that gives ample curricular and pedagogical attention to content and language outcomes in multilingual educational settings. Increasingly, it is heralded as a way to responsibly enact top-down English-Medium-of-Instruction (EMI) policies at the university level, where teachers and students are tasked with developing their English proficiency while remaining competitive in the international job market. However, teachers and teacher educators hoping to implement this approach in their science, technology, engineering and mathematics (sTEM) content courses face significant challenges. This article serves as an introduction to a guest-edited special issue that reports on several aspects related to a project of international collaboration called Project sCILLA, an acronym for “sTEM Content Integrated with Language-Learning Activities”. We first provide a brief overview of the project, which was developed and carried out in collaboration between Michigan state University and a consortium of 10 rural universities in Kazakhstan as a way to support sTEM educators who wish to adapt their teaching practices to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Education. We then offer an overview of the six articles that comprise the special issue, and call for deliberate and dialogic international collaboration as a way to support teachers responding to language policy demands.

Variation of parental and chick diet in opportunistic insectivorous European Bee-eaters

Insectivorous Palaearctic bird species associated with open habitats rely on high prey abundances,which are currently declining due to habitat loss and intensive agricultural *** European Bee-eater(Merops apiaster)is an opportunistic insectivore of open habitats,preying mainly on medium to large-sized flying *** diet composition received some attention in the past,but the current variation in diet composition of birds breeding across different habitats,and between adults and chicks remains poorly *** this study,we determine variation in bee-eaters’diet in colonies located in five common habitats at the Iberian *** also assess differences in the diet composition of chicks and adults and investigate seasonal diet selectivity of ***,we explore the variability in the size of prey provided to chicks throughout their growth *** and Coleoptera were the most important groups for bee-eaters,with adults and chicks consuming 58.8%and 64.1%of hymenopterans and 37.6%and 28.6%of coleopterans,*** proportion of Hymenoptera(42.3–55.7%)and Coleoptera(43.3–53.5%)in the diet was similar in colonies in pasture and oak habitats,but Hymenoptera dominated(83.8%and 95.7%)in meadow and mixed forest *** being a generally opportunistic predator,adult bee-eaters provide their progeny with an increasing proportion of larger insects through chick ***,they equally take Hymenoptera and Coleoptera for themselves and their chicks,even when the abundance of these insects decreases ***,these results suggest that local prey availability associated with specific habitats influences diet composition and that regional declines in certain groups may,therefore,affect insectivore species differently according to their dietary and habitat preferences.
