To investigate the effect of unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons on PAHs （polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons） formation, numerical analysis using detailed reaction mechanism is performed. For the carbon black produced by benzene feedstock, three kinds of unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons （acetylene, diacetylene, and vinylacetylene） are added. The detailed reaction mechanism which is proposed by Wang and Frenklach is consisted by 527 reactions and 99 chemical species. The formations of PAHs and nuclei are promoted by unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons addition. There exits optimal benzene/acetylene ratio （XA/XB = 0.50）, benzene/diacetylene mixture ratio （XD/XB = 0.60）, benzene/vinyl-acetylene mixture ratio （XV/XB = 0.25）. The formation of nuclei is most promoted by acetylene addition, and the benzene/acetylene mixture ratio is 0.50.

Relationship between sense of coherence and lifestyle in middle-aged workers in Japan

Metabolic syndrome has recently become a concern in Japan. It is commonly believed that lifestyle quality must be improved and main- tained for optimum health. A cross-sectional survey of middle-aged workers was performed to examine the relationship between a sense of coherence (SOC) and health status. The study further aimed to determine the quality of life necessary to maintain physical and psychologi- cal health. An anonymous online survey was conducted with a panel of respondents regis- tered with an Internet research service. The survey items addressed SOC and awareness of lifestyle habits, specifically lifestyle factors of self-rated health, level of satisfaction, and level of stress. Responses were obtained from 412 women and 206 men. The approximately equal high and low SOC results indicated that self- rated health and level of satisfaction were signi- ficantly higher in both sexes with a high SOC, and such participants also experienced signifi- cantly lower levels of daily stress. With regard to the association between lifestyle factors and health, women with a high SOC tended to have shorter commutes, and a higher percentage ate breakfast daily compared with women with a low SOC. Men with a high SOC worked significantly longer hours, and a higher percentage were ei- ther married or resided with family. No sex dif- ferences in SOC were observed for health be- havior in daily life, and 50% of both women and men reported positive health behavior. Health behavior differed, however, according to SOC and sex. These findings suggest that health pre- servation in daily life of middle-aged worker’s women is possible through sustaining and en- hancing

Antiepileptic Drug-Induced Apoptosis Was Prevented by L-Type Calcium Channel Activator in Cultured Rat Cortical Cells

Experimental data have shown that antiepileptic drugs cause neurodegeneration in developing rats. Valproate (VPA) is the drug of choice in primary generalized epilepsies, and carbamazepine (CBZ) is one of the most prescribed drugs in partial seizures. These drugs block sodium channels, thereby reducing sustained repetitive neuronal firing. The intracellular mechanisms whereby AEDs induce neuronal cell death are unclear. We examined whether AEDs induce apoptotic cell death in cultured cortical cells and whether calcium ions are involved in the AED-induced cell death. VPA and CBZ increased apoptotic cell death and induced morphological changes that were characterized by cell shrinkage and nuclear condensation or fragmentation. Incubation of cortical cultures with VPA or CBZ decreased phospho-Akt levels. CBZ decreased the intracellular calcium levels. On the other hand, FPL64176, an L-type calcium channel activator, increased the intracellular calcium levels and prevented the AED-induced apoptosis. Glycogen synthase kinase-3 inhibitors, such as alsterpaullone and azakenpaullone, prevented the AED-induced apoptosis. These results suggest that intracellular calcium level changes are associated with AEDs and apoptosis and that the activation of glycogen synthase kinase-3 is involved in the death of rat cortical neurons.

Preparation of Microcapsules Containing Triple Core Materials with Interfacial Condensation Reaction

In this manuscript, we describe the novel method for preparing the microcapsules containing α-tocopherol oil droplets as the first core material, calcium chloride powder as the second core material and the fine water droplets as the third core material by the interfacial condensation reaction between hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose and tannic acid. The interfacial condensation reaction was performed between hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose dissolved in the continuous water phase and tannic acid dissolved in the inner fine water droplets as the third core material. The calcium chloride powder as the second core material was dispersed in the α-tocopherol oil droplet as the first core material beforehand. The α-tocopherol oil containing the second and the third core materials was dispersed in the continuous water phase to form the [(S + W)/O/W] emulsion. The α-tocopherol oil as the first core material was microencapsulated satisfactorily and the contents of the second core material were increased with the concentration of stearic acid as the oil soluble stabilizer. The mechanical strength of microcapsules increased with the concentration of hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose. Thermal energy could be released by breaking the microcapsules in water and by dissolving calcium chloride in the continuous water phase.

This study deals with the aerodynamic sound, especially the Aeolian tone. One of the problems with the aerodynamic sound, noise reduction along a railway line is significant engineering issue for further speed-up of a high-speed train. In particular, a pantograph is one of the main aerodynamic noise sources of a high-speed train. As one of the methods for the aerodynamic noise reduction, this study proposes the tapered cylinder by a pantograph. In this paper, the aerodynamic sound and the wake flow of the combinational inclined circular cylinder and tapered cylinder are experimentally and numerically investigated in knuckle upstream and knuckle downstream. Also, we suggest that the surface of grooves such as wood grain interacts with the aerodynamic sound generated from the model. Here, it is considered that the comparison of aerodynamic sound between the model with grooves and without grooves. Consequently, reduction of the maximum aerodynamic sound is possible for the tapered cylinder in the case of knuckle downstream. Furthermore, the noise reduction method is effective that the model surface with grooves such as wood grain.

Dear Editor,Beige adipocytes,which increase energy expenditure by dissipating energy as heat,have gained attention as a therapeutic target for combating obesity.1 Adipocytes express many types of G-protein-coupled receptors(GPCRs),each of which has a unique preference for the Gs,Gi,Gq,and G12 *** the function of Gs-coupledβ-adrenergic receptors in beige adipocyte induction is well established,2 little is known about the function of G12-coupled GPCRs beyond its suppressive roles in white adipocyte maturation.3 In this study,we generated transgenic mice conditionally expressing a G12-coupled designer GPCR using a Cre-loxP system and investigated the potential effects of G12 signaling on adipocyte biology.

The Inohana Lake is a branch lake of the Hamana Lake. The Inohana Lake is an estuary rather than a brackish lake, and has suffered environmental problems such as eutrophication and bottom hypoxic water. In this study, the coupled hydrodynamic and ecological models （eco-hydrodynamic model） were used to construct the strategy for preventing the bottom hypoxic water and improving or recovering the water quality in the lake. Using the model input obtained from the summertime data over 1998-2002, the summer-average flow field and oxygen concentration and budget of the standard run were calculated. Remedial measures used in this study are divided into two parts： the biogeochemical and physical changes in the present situation. For the remedial measures including the biogeochemical changes in the present situation, the simulations considering the reductions of the nutrient inputs from the river, main lake （land） and bottom sediment, and the sediment oxygen demand （SOD） were carried out. For the remedial measures including the physical changes, the 50 and 100 m extensions of the inlet width were considered in the model runs. These simulated results were compared in terms of changes in the dissolved oxygen （DO） concentration and oxygen budget in the bottom layer in the Inohana Lake. There was no significant change in the DO concentration and oxygen stock in the simulations for the reduction of the nutrient inputs from the land and bottom sediment, however increases in those in the simulations for the reduction of SOD. When SOD was reduced by 50%, the bottom DO concentration increased by approximately 2 mg/L and the oxygen stock in the bottom layer increased by 47% comparing the present situation （the standard run） of the lake. The simulation results for inlet width extension showed that the extension of width makes the DO concentration and oxygen stock lower.
