Radar-based Characteristics and Formation Environment of Supercells in the Landfalling Typhoon Mujigae in 2015

This study presents the radar-based characteristics and formation environment of supercells spawned by the tornadic landfalling Typhoon Mujigae(2015)in October 2015.More than 100 supercells were identified within a 24-hour period around the time of the typhoon’s landfall,of which three were tornadic with a rotational intensity clearly stronger than those of non-tornadic supercells.The identified supercells were concentrated within a relatively small area in the northeast quadrant beyond 140 km from the typhoon center.These supercells were found more likely to form over flat topography and were difficult to maintain in mountainous regions.During the study period,more supercells formed offshore than onshore.The mesocyclones of the identified supercells were characterized by a small diameter generally less than 5 km and a shallow depth generally less than 4 km above ground level.An environmental analysis revealed that the northeast quadrant had the most favorable conditions for the genesis of supercell in this typhoon case.The nondimensional supercell composite parameter(SCP)and entraining-SCP(E-SCP)were effective in separating supercell from non-supercell environment.Even though the atmosphere in the typhoon’s northeast quadrant was characterized by an E-SCP/SCP value supportive of supercell organization,orography was an impeditive factor for the supercell development.These findings support the use of traditional parameters obtained from midlatitude supercells to assess the supercell potential in a tropical cyclone envelope.

Verification of tropical cyclones(TC)wind structure forecasts from global NWP models and ensemble prediction systems(EPSs)

Forecasting wind structure of tropical cyclone(TC)is vital in assessment of impact due to high winds using Numerical Weather Prediction(NWP)model.The usual verification technique on TC wind structure forecasts are based on grid-to-grid comparisons between forecast field and the actual field.However,precision of traditional verification measures is easily affected by small scale errors and thus cannot well discriminate the accuracy or effectiveness of NWP model forecast.In this study,the Method for Object-Based Diagnostic Evaluation(MODE),which has been widely adopted in verifying precipitation fields,is utilized in TC’s wind field verification for the first time.The TC wind field forecast of deterministic NWP model and Ensemble Prediction System(EPS)of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ECMWF)over the western North Pacific and the South China Sea in 2020 were evaluated.A MODE score of 0.5 is used as a threshold value to represent a skillful(or good)forecast.It is found that the R34(radius of 34 knots)wind field structure forecasts within 72 h are good regardless of DET or EPS.The performance of R50 and R64 is slightly worse but the R50 forecasts within 48 h remain good,with MODE exceeded 0.5.The R64forecast within 48 h are worth for reference as well with MODE of around 0.5.This study states that the TC wind field structure forecast by ECMWF is skillful for TCs over the western North Pacific and the South China Sea.

PROGRESS IN HONG KONG'S TROPICAL CYCLONE FORECASTING AND WARNING SERVICES IN RECENT DECADES

With modern infrastructures and effective warning systems,casualties,damages and losses due to tropicalcyclones(TCs)have been significantly reduced over the years in Hong Kong.Nevertheless,densely populated coastal cities like Hong Kong will need to continuously enhance its resilience to high winds,heavy rain and storm surges brought by TCs,especially with the growing concern of the challenges induced by climate change and sea level rise.By embracing the advance of remote sensing,communication and numerical modelling technology,the Hong Kong Observatory(HKO)continues to improve its TC monitoring and forecasting techniques as well as forecasting and warning services to meet the needs of the society.This paper concisely reviews the major development and achievement of TC-related operation and services of HKO in recent decades,in aspects such as Numerical Weather Prediction(NWP)models,nowcasting techniques,warning communication and public education.Future thrusts on TC forecasting and warning services of HKO will also be discussed.

A REVIEW OF THE STORM CHARACTERISTICS OF TYPHOON KALMAEGI (1415) AND RELATED FORECASTING CONSIDER ATIONS IN HONG KONG

Kalmaegi(1415)required the issuance of Gale or Storm Wind Signal No.8 in Hong Kong in 2014,even though it passed by at a distance of 370 km from Hong Kong during its closest approach.Storm surges triggered by Kalmaegi caused backflow of sea water in some low lying areas in both Hong Kong and Macao.This paper reviews the use of observational data in monitoring the cyclone characteristics and studies the synoptic factors leading to its fast movement and extensive circulation.The combined analysis of multi-platform satellite wind retrieval,in-situ surface observations and aircraft reconnaissance data over the northern part of the South China Sea is found to be useful in depicting the cyclone structure.Synoptic analysis suggests that the relatively large size of Kalmaegi may be attributed to monsoon shear pattern during its formation stage and the subsequent strengthening of southwesterlies over the northern part of the South China Sea.A strong subtropical ridge north of Kalmaegi not only provides strong steering and thus its high translational speed,but also leads to extensive gale force wind distribution over its northern semi-circle.The performance of various numerical prediction models in forecasting the movement,intensity change and wind structure of Kalmaegi,as well as the storm surge triggered,is assessed and presented.

With the increasing incidence of heavy rainfall events,particularly over the monsoon regions,the highly dense populations are more vulnerable[1].Research initiatives on observation,modeling,and prediction of monsoon heavy rainfall have been promoted actively by World Weather Research Programme's(WWRP)Working Group on Tropical Meteorology Research(WGTMR)of the World Meteorological Organization(WMO)since 2010.Series of monsoon-heavy-rainfall workshops were held in Beijing(2011),Petaling Jaya(2012),and New Delhi(2015)to benefit scientists worldwide and forecasters from the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services.An international Research and Development Project,namely,the Southern China Monsoon Rainfall Experiment(SCMREX)[2]was established in 2013 to coordinate field campaign experiments and to conduct scientific research on presummer(April-June)heavy rainfall processes in southern China.

本文从发音和听辨两方面去分析八位说广州话的香港学生对普通话三组咝音声母[s ts ts^h]、[ʂtʂtʂ^h]、[ɕtɕtɕ^h]的习得。经声学分析取得咝音噪音的LPC能量峰值,发现这些广州话母语者的三组普通话咝音的发音跟普通话母语者的发音有差异,尤其是[s ts ts^h]和[ɕtɕtɕ^h]的发音是接近广州话的[s ts ts^h],显示母语对二语发音的干扰。此外,根据十位普通话母语者的听辨评估,发现八位广州话母语者对三组普通话咝音的发音有混淆,降低了整体的发音正确率。不过在听辨方面,八位广州话母语者基本上都能区分三组普通话咝音,显示香港学生在二语学习的发音和听辨能力不同。研究结果让我们对广州话母语者习得普通话的咝音声母有新的认识。

Primary torsion dystonia (PTD) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous movement disorder. At least thirteen different types of dystonia can be distinguished on a genetic basis.~1 The DYT1 gene was first mapped by Ozelius et al in 1989.~2 (Kramer et) al^3 linked the same locus to PTD in 12 Ashkenazi Jewish families in 1990. Most patients with early-onset generalized PTD were caused by the same three base pair (GAG) deletion in the DYT1 gene on chromosome 9q34.^(1,4,5) The product of the gene is a protein called torsinA.~5 (Although the) function of this protein is as yet uncertain, it is widely distributed throughout the brain with high levels in the substantia nigra compacta dopamine neurones.~6

Topical application of adipose tissuederived mesenchymal stem cells(ADMSCs)reduced cerebral edema in experimental traumatic brain injury(TBI)-a preliminary study

Background:Our previous studies showed that topical application of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)improved functional recovery in rat traumatic brain injury(TBI)model,and hypoxic precondition further enhanced the therapeutic effects of MSCs.There was no previous study on the attenuation of cerebral edema by MSCs.We investigated whether topical application of normoxic and hypoxic MSCs could reduce cerebral edema in an experimental TBI model.Methods:Two million normoxic(N=24)and hypoxic(N=24)MSCs were applied topically to exposed the cerebral cortex in a controlled cortical impact(CCI)model.The MSCs were fixed in position with fibrin glue.No treatment was given to control animals(TBI only:n=24).After surgery,four animals in each group were sacrificed daily(day 1 to day 6)for edema evaluation.Normal animals without TBI were used as reference(n=4).The expressions of GFAP,AQP4,and MMP9 were also investigated by immunofluorescence staining and RT-PCR at day 3.Results:The edema peaked within 3 days after TBI.Compared with the control,hypoxic MSCs reduced brain water content significantly(p<0.05).Both hypoxic and normoxic MSCs downregulated the expression of MMP9 and normalized AQP4 distribution to astrocyte end feet.Conclusion:Our preliminary study showed that topical application of hypoxic MSCs suppressed both vasogenic and cytotoxic edema formation.

Cystic meconium peritonitis with jejunoileal atresia:Is it associated with unfavorable outcome?

AIM To compare the outcome between patients with jejunoileal atresia(JIA) associated with cystic meconium peritonitis(CMP) and patients with isolated JIA(JIA without CMP).METHODS A retrospective study was conducted for all neonates with JIA operated in our institute from January 2005 to January 2016.Demographics including the gestation age,sex,birth weight,age at operation,the presence of associated syndrome was recorded.Clinical outcome including the type of operation performed,operative time,the need for reoperation and mortality were studied.The demographics and the outcome between the 2 groups were compared.RESULTS During the study period,53 neonates had JIA underwent operation in our institute.Seventeen neonates(32%) were associated with CMP.There was no statistical difference on the demographics in the two groups.Patients with CMP had earlier operation than patients with isolated JIA(mean 1.4 d vs 3 d,P = 0.038).Primaryanastomosis was performed in 16 patients(94%) with CMP and 30 patients(83%) with isolated JIA(P = 0.269).Patients with CMP had longer operation(mean 190 min vs 154 min,P = 0.004).There were no statistical difference the need for reoperation(3 vs 6,P = 0.606) and mortality(2 vs 1,P = 0.269) between the two groups.CONCLUSION Primary intestinal anastomosis can be performed in94% of patients with JIA associated with CMP.Although patients with CMP had longer operative time,the mortality and reoperation rates were low and were comparable to patients with isolated JIA.
