In this work,a new coding scheme called predictive classified address vector quantization(PCAVQ) is proposed for image *** this scheme,a new two-stage classification method based on the three-level block truncation coding technique is first developed to efficient classify blocks of an image into different classes having similar *** predictive mean removal VQ technique is applied to reduce the blocking effect in decoded *** the other hand,a new simplified address VQ method is also developed to increase the compression ratio of the overall *** using real images show that the proposed PCAVQ scheme has about 1.7 to 4 dB improvement in PSNR over the JPEG baseline system.

Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most common cancers worldwide,and a leading cause of cancer-related *** to unsatisfactory clinical outcomes under the current standard of care,there is a need to search for and identify novel and potent therapeutic targets to improve patient *** is the first and only approved targeted therapy for the treatment of hepatocellular *** functioning as a multiple tyrosine kinase,sorafenib also acts via a kinase-independent mechanism to target signal transducer and activator of transcription 3(STAT3) signaling in hepatocellular carcinoma ***3 is a key regulator of inflammation,cell survival,and tumorigenesis of liver cells,and the high percentage of hepatocellular carcinoma cells with constitutively active STAT3 justifies targeting it for the development of novel *** inactivates STAT3 and STAT3-related signaling by inducing a conformational change in and releasing the autoinhibition of Src homology region 2 domaincontaining *** phosphatase negatively regulates STAT3 activity,which leads to the subsequent apoptosis of cancer *** novel anti-cancer property of sorafenib will be discussed in this review,not only adding information regarding its mechanism of action but also providing an innovative approach for the development of cancer therapeutics in the future.

AIM： To evaluate the outcome of transarterial chemoembolization （TACE）in patients with unresectable hepatocellular cardnoma （HCC）〈5 cm in diameter eligible for radiofrequency ablation （RFA）. METHODS： The treatment-related mortality, morbidity, long-term survival, and prognostic factors of HCC patients who had TACE and fulfilled the present inclusion criteria for RFA were evaluated. RESULTS： Of the 748 patients treated with TACE between January 1990 and December 2002, 114 patients were also eligible for RFA. The treatment-related mortality and morbidity were 1% and 19%, respectively. Survival at 1, 3, and 5 years was 80%, 43%, and 23%, respectively. Older age and a high albumin level were associated with a better survival, whereas a high α-fetoprotein level （AFP） and the size of the largest tumor 〉3 cm in diameter were adverse prognostic factors in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION： The morbidity, mortality, and survival data after TACE for small HCCs eligible for RFA are comparable to those reported after RFA in the literature. Our data suggest the need for a randomized comparison of the two treatment modalities for small HCCs.

Background: Programmed cell death protein 4(PDCD4) is a novel tumor suppressor protein involved in pro?grammed cell death. Its association with cancer progression has been observed in multiple tumor models, but evidence supporting its association with solid tumors in humans remains controversial. This study aimed to determine the clinical signiicance and prognostic value of PDCD4 in solid ***: A systematic literature review was performed to retrieve publications with available clinical informa?tion and survival data. The eligibility of the selected articles was based on the criteria of the Dutch Cochrane Centre proposed by the Meta?analysis Of Observational Studies in Epidemiology group. Pooled odds ratios(ORs), hazard ratios(HRs), and 95% conidence intervals(CIs) for survival analysis were calculated. Publication bias was examined by Begg's and Egger's ***: Clinical data of 2227 cancer patients with solid tumors from 23 studies were evaluated. PDCD4 expression was signiicantly associated with the diferentiation status of head and neck cancer(OR 4.25, 95% CI 1.87–9.66) and digestive system cancer(OR 2.87, 95% CI 1.84–4.48). Down?regulation of PDCD4 was signiicantly associated with short overall survival of patients with head and neck(HR: 3.44, 95% CI 2.38–4.98), breast(HR: 1.86, 95% CI 1.36–2.54), digestive system(HR: 2.12, 95% CI 1.75–2.56), and urinary system cancers(HR: 3.16, 95% CI 1.06–9.41).Conclusions: The current evidence suggests that PDCD4 down?regulation is involved in the progression of several types of solid tumor and is a potential marker for solid tumor prognoses. Its clinical usefulness should be conirmed by large?scale prospective studies.

A freshwater green microalgae Chlorella sp., UMACC344 was shown to produce high lipid content and has the potential to be used as feedstock for biofuel production. In this study, photosynthetic effciency, biochemical pro?les and non-targeted metabolic pro?ling were studied to compare between the nitrogen-replete and deplete conditions. Slowed growth, change in photosynthetic pigments and lowered photosynthetic effciency were observed in response to nitrogen deprivation. Biochemical pro?les of the cultures showed an increased level of carbohydrate, lipids and total fatty acids, while the total soluble protein content was lowered. A trend of fatty acid saturation was observed in the nitrogen-deplete culture with an increase in the level of saturated fatty acids especially C16:0 and C18:0, accompanied by a decrease in proportions of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Fifty-nine metabolites, including amino acids, lipids, phytochemical compounds, vitamins and cofactors were signi?cantly dysregulated and annotated in this study. Pathway mapping analysis revealed a rewiring of metabolic pathways in the cells, particularly purine, carotenoid, nicotinate and nicotinamide, and amino acid metabolisms. Within the treatment period of nitrogen deprivation, the key processes involved were reshu ? ing of nitrogen from proteins and photosynthetic machinery, together with carbon repartitioning in carbohydrates and lipids.

Nasal septal abscess is an uncommon condition, yet presents as a rhinological emergency. Its symptoms resemble upper respiratory tract infection and the diagnosis may be missed leading to intracranial complication and cosmetic deformity. We present a healthy patient with idiopathic nasal septal abscess who complained of acute complete nasal obstruction, fever and nasal pain. Common aetiologies, causative agents, complications and management of nasal septal abscess are discussed.

Alzheimer’s disease(AD),the most common dementia,is characterized by potentially neurotoxic aggregation of Aβ peptide and tau protein,and their deposition as amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles(NFTs).Tau aggregation also occurs in other common neurodegenerative *** dementia(FTD)can be caused by tau mutations that increase the susceptibility of tau to hyperphosphorylation and aggregation,which may cause neuronal dysfunction and deposition of NFTs.17-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin(17-AAG)is a potent inhibitor of heat shock protein 90(Hsp90),a cytosolic chaperone implicated in the proper folding and functions of a repertoire of client proteins.17-AAG binds to Hsp90 and enhances degradation of Hsp90 client *** sought to determine whether 17-AAG can reduce Aβ and tau pathology in the brains of AD and FTD model mice expressing Aβ or P301L mutant tau,*** were randomized to receive 25,5,or 0 mg/kg 17-AAG thrice weekly from age eight to 11 *** was performed by rotarod test on motor function,on the area occupied by plaques in hippocampus or NFTs in medulla tissue sections,and on mortality.A high dose of 17-AAG tended to decrease NFTs in male mice(p=0.08).Further studies are required to confirm the effect of 17-AAG in diseases of tau aggregation.

Ozone plasma treatment is accessible to be applied on shading adjustment and colour fading because of the capacity of ozone production. It is a green process that treats dyed cotton fabric under dry condition so as to avoid chemical pollutants. This study means to explore colour reflectance of decolourized sulfur dyed cotton texture using ozone plasma treatment. Sulfur dyed cotton textures with various colour depths (0.5%, 1.5%, 2.5%) were set up to be treated different plasma parameters, including ozone air concentrations (10%, 30%, 50%, 70%), water contents in terms of weight percentage (35%, 45%) of fabric and ozone air plasma treatment periods (10 mins, 20 mins, 30 mins). The colour fading result is assessed by the colour reflectance in percentage (R%) utilizing spectrophotometer under CIE standard illuminant D65. The valid colour fading based on high percentage of reflectance was demonstrated from plasma treatment under higher ozone air concentration (50% and 70% ozone in air) and longer time length of plasma treatment (20 mins and 30 mins). The level of water content contained in the cotton fabrics is appeared to have noteworthy relationship with the degree of decolourization.
