Gigantic electric-field-induced second harmonic generation from an organic conjugated polymer enhanced by a band-edge effect

Electric-field-induced second harmonic generation(EFISH),a third-order nonlinear process,arises from the interaction between the electric field of an external bias and that of two incident *** can be used to dynamically control the nonlinear optical response of materials and is therefore promising for active nonlinear ***,it has been challenging to achieve a strong modulation with EFISH in conventional nonlinear ***,we report a large tunability of an EFISH signal from a subwavelength-thick polymer film sandwiched between a transparent electrode and a metallic *** exploiting the band-edge-enhanced third-order nonlinear susceptibility of the organic conjugated polymer,we successfully demonstrate a gigantic EFISH effect with a modulation ratio up to 422%V^(−1) at a pumping wavelength of 840 *** band-edge-enhanced EFISH opens new avenues for modulating the intensity of SHG signals and for controlling nonlinear electro-optic interactions in nanophotonic devices.

Performance of ground penetrating radar in root detection and its application in root diameter estimation under controlled conditions

A plant is stabilized by its root system. In congested urban cities such as Hong Kong, ground trenching is frequently seen due to the installation of utility lines along the roadside. Soil nailing, which involves soil coring in slopes, is a common solution to improve the slope stability. However, both activities inevitably pose a risk to the integrity of any root sys- tems present, and thus reduce the root anchorage. To prevent or minimize such damage, a careful design of the excava- tion/drilling location is of prime importance. Ground penetrating radar （GPR） provides a non-destructive method for locating roots by examining the contrast between the dielectric properties of the roots and the surrounding soil. To examine the perfor- mance of GPR and promote its use in Hong Kong, a test bed was prepared using local materials to create a controlled envi- ronment in which to conduct a series of systematic tests evaluating the performance of a 900 MHz GPR. The reflected radar- grams were subject to the influence of the following factors： size and depth of roots, horizontal distance between roots, and contrast between the root and soil water content. Correlations between root size and a number of waveform parameters were also explored. Limiting values for root size, root embedded depth, horizontal separation distance between roots, and water content contrast between root and soil were obtained. A significant correlation was found between the root diameter and time travel parameter T2 （p〈0.001, t=0.795）. Because GPR root detection is highly site-specific, this study provides a local refer- ence for GPR performance in the Hong Kong environment. The findings demonstrate that the 900 MHz GPR is applicable in Hong Kong for the detection of main roots.

Unpacking the Relationship Between Teachers’Perceptions of Professional Learning Communities and Differentiated Instruction Practice

Purpose:This exploratory study investigates the relationship between teachers’perceptions of professional learning communities(PLCs)and their differentiated instruction(DI)practice in a Hong Kong primary education ***/Approach/Methods:Three subsidized primary schools participated in the study.A total of 121 teachers completed surveys regarding their perceptions of PLC engagement and DI ***:Using principal component analysis,three dimensions of PLC engagement were identified:student learning,reflective dialogue,and shared and supportive *** distinctive PLC engagement profiles were generated based on cluster analysis:high PLC engagement and low PLC ***’PLC engagement profiles were correlated with their DI ***/Value:The findings have implications for fostering teacher engagement in *** teacher participation in PLCs has great potential for promoting the use of DI.

Linking stemness with colorectal cancer initiation, progression, and therapy

The discovery of cancer stem cells caused a paradigm shift in the concepts of origin and development of colorectal cancer. Several unresolved questions remain in this field though. Are colorectal cancer stem cells the cause or an effect of the disease? How do cancer stem cells assist in colorectal tumor dissemination to distant organs? What are the molecular or environmental factors affecting the roles of these cells in colorectal cancer? Through this review, we investigate the key findings until now and attempt to elucidate the origins, physical properties, microenvironmental niches, as well as the molecular signaling network that support the existence, self-renewal, plasticity, quiescence, and the overall maintenance of cancer stem cells in colorectal cancer. Increasing data show that the cancer stem cells play a crucial role not only in the establishment of the primary colorectal tumor but also in the distant spread of the disease. Hence, we will also look at the mechanisms adopted by cancer stem cells to influence the development of metastasis and evade therapeutic targeting and its role in the overall disease prognosis. Finally, we will illustrate the importance of understanding the biology of these cells to develop improved clinical strategies to tackle colorectal cancer.

Successful conservative management of Class III iatrogenic aortic dissection

Iatrogenic aortic dissection （IAD） is a rare complication of percutaneous coronary intervention （PCI） with an estimated incidence of 0.02%--0.04%. lAD occurs more frequently in the setting of urgent PCI for acute myocardial infarction （AMI）（0.19%） than for elective procedures （0.01%）.[11 The mortality risk associated with IAD is high （16%） and is comparable to that for spontaneous aortic dissection （16%）.Urgent surgery is the treatment of choice for extensive dissection or hemodynamic instability. In this report, we present a case of severe IAD that was managed conservatively with good clinical outcome.

Shen-Jing as a Chinese Medicine Concept Might Be a Counterpart of Stem Cells in Regenerative Medicine

As the epitome of the modern regenerative medicine, stem cells were proposed in the basic sense no more than 200 years ago. However, the concept of "stem cells" existed long before the modern medical description. The hypothesis that all things, including our sentient body, were generated from a small origin was shared between Western and Chinese people. The ancient Chinese philosophers considered Jing(also known as essence) as the origin of life. In Chinese medicine(CM), Jing is mainly stored in Kidney(Shen) and the so-called Shen-Jing(Kidney essence). Here, we propose that Shen-Jing is the CM term used to express the meaning of "origin and regeneration". This theoretical discovery has at least two applications. First, the actions underlying causing Shen-Jing deficiency, such as excess sexual intercourse, chronic diseases, and aging, might damage the function of stem cells. Second, a large number of Chinese herbs with Shen-Jing-nourishing efficacy had been proven to affect stem cell proliferation and differentiation. Therefore, if Shen-Jing in CM is equivalent with stem cells in regenerative medicine, higher effective modulators for regulating stem-cell behaviors from Kidney-tonifying herbs would be expected.

FOTool: Modelling Indigenous Community Cultures in Sarawak

Formal-Object Tool (FOTool) is a software modelling approach that integrates formal specification and object oriented model. FOTool integrates the rigour of formal methods and the ease of use of OO techniques. The idea of FOTool is to provide an easy interface by allowing the application developer to develop the software model by using the object-models, while the verification of the models is carried out by using formal models. Before the verification process, the object static and dynamic models need to be transformed into formal models based on the transformation rules defined in FOTool. This paper presents the FOTool architecture, the transformation rules from object to formal models, and discusses the application of FOTool in our continuous research in modeling, the indigenous communities’ knowledge in Sarawak, and also the challenges of modelling the complex cultural, taboos and beliefs of indigenous communities. The knowledge is generated from the heterogeneous cultural, taboos and beliefs of various ethnic groups in Sarawak. The traditional knowledge is then mapped to a logical explanation in relation to modern life style.
