Current ICD-11 descriptions for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD)were recently published online,in the same year as the DSM-5-TR(text revised edition)was released.In this commentary,we compare and contrast the DSM-5/DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 diagnostic criteria,summarize important differences,and underscore their clinical and research implications.Overall,three major differences emerge:(1)The number of diagnostic criteria for inattention(IA),hyperactivity(HY)and impulsivity(IM)symptoms(i.e.,DSM-5-TR has nine IA and nine HY/IM symptoms,whereas ICD-11 has 11 IA and 11 HY/IM symptoms);(2)the clarity and standardization of diagnostic thresholds(i.e.,the diagnostic thresholds for symptom count in IA and HY/IM domains are explicitly specified in DSM-5-TR,whereas in ICD-11 they are not);and(3)the partitioning of HY and IM symptoms into sub-dimensions(i.e.,difference in partitioning HY and IM symptom domains relates to the differences between the current and previous editions of DSM and ICD,and this has important research implications).Currently,no ICD-11 based ADHD rating scales exist and while this absence represents an obstacle for respective research and clinical practice,it also presents opportunities for research development.This article highlights these challenges,possible remedies and novel research opportunities.

Phantom limb is a disabling neuropsychiatric condition among amputees resulting in pain and disturbance that impact their functions,quality of life,and autonomy.While pharmacological approaches appeared to be ineffec-tive,the emergence and integration of X-reality,including virtual reality,augmented reality,and mixed reality,might elevate the effectiveness of mirror therapy in managing phantom limb.The objective of this study is to review X-reality for managing phantom pain.A systematic search was conducted on PubMed,Scopus,Web of Science,PsycINFO,Embase,and CINAHL.Sixteen(n=16)studies containing 66 lower-limb and 53 upper-limb amputees were included for the review over the thematic framework of amputee characteristics and intervention designs,while thirteen(n=13)studies were further proceeded for the meta-analysis.We found eleven studies on virtual reality(n=11),four studies on marker-based augmented reality(n=4)and one study on mixed reality(n=1)with a total of 40 game/task themes involving,motor skills,motor control,and stimulus-sensing.Regardless,all these interventions adopted the movement representation strategies with different techniques.Overall,the X-reality interventions reduced the pain level of the amputees(mean difference:-2.30,95%CI,-3.38 to-1.22),especially the virtual reality subgroup(mean difference:-2.83,95%CI,-4.43 to-1.22).However,there were substantial heterogeneity and partially explained by the subgroup analysis on publication year.The strength of evidence was limited by case reports and case series in this review.

Thrombin is a pivotal molecule in acute myocardial infarction ( Ml) because of its extensive procoagulant and prothrombotic actions. Antithrombin therapy is an important component of the pharmacotherapy for acute Ml. The standard agent used in clinical practice, unfractionated heparin (UFH), is associated with the disadvantages of variable anticoagulant effect, inability to inhibit clot-bound thrombin, neutralization by platelet factor 4, and the propensity to cause thrombocytopenic complications. Novel thrombin inhibitors have been developed to overcome these disadvantages. Although possessing the property of inhibiting both fluid-phase and clot-bound thrombin, the direct thrombin inhibitor hirudin has been shown to give marginal benefits over UFH as adjunct to fibrinolysis in ST-elevation Ml. Bivalirudin, another direct thrombin inhibitor, is able to reduce reinfarction in patients treated with streptokinase and is a new anticoagulant treatment option in this setting. The pharmacokinetic characteristics of better availability, longer half-life, and dose-independent clearance together with the ability of inhibiting both thrombin generation and activity make the low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs) an attractive alternative to UFH. The favorable benefit/risk profile of the LMWHs as adjunct to different generations of fibrinolytic agents is setting the stage for larger clinical trials to confirm their role as the antithrombin agent of choice for STEMI.

Zinc metabolism at the cellular level is critical for many biological processes in the body.A key observation is the disruption of cellular homeostasis,often coinciding with disease progression.As an essential factor in maintaining cellular equilibrium,cellular zinc has been increasingly spotlighted in the context of disease development.Extensive research suggests zinc’s involvement in promoting malignancy and invasion in cancer cells,despite its low tissue concentration.This has led to a growing body of literature investigating zinc’s cellular metabolism,particularly the functions of zinc transporters and storage mechanisms during cancer progression.Zinc transportation is under the control of two major transporter families:SLC30(ZnT)for the excretion of zinc and SLC39(ZIP)for the zinc intake.Additionally,the storage of this essential element is predominantly mediated by metallothioneins(MTs).This review consolidates knowledge on the critical functions of cellular zinc signaling and underscores potential molecular pathways linking zinc metabolism to disease progression,with a special focus on cancer.We also compile a summary of clinical trials involving zinc ions.Given the main localization of zinc transporters at the cell membrane,the potential for targeted therapies,including small molecules and monoclonal antibodies,offers promising avenues for future exploration.

We survey recent effort in establishing the hydrodynamic limits and the fluctuation limits for a class of interacting diffusions in domains. These systems are introduced to model the transport of positive and negative charges in solar cells. They are general microscopic models that can be used to describe macroscopic phenomena with coupled boundary conditions, such as the popula- tion dynamics of two segregated species under competition. Proving these two types of limits represents establishing the functional law of large numbers and the functional central limit theorem, respectively, for the empirical measures of the spatial positions of the particles. We show that the hydrodynamic limit is a pair of deterministic measures whose densities solve a coupled nonlinear heat equations, while the fluctuation limit can be described by a Gaussian Markov process that solves a stochastic partial differential equation.

Solar steam generation(SSG)is widely regarded as one of the most sustainable technologies for seawater desalination.However,salt fouling severely compromises the evaporation performance and lifetime of evaporators,limiting their practical applications.Herein,we propose a hierarchical salt-rejection(HSR)strategy to prevent salt precipitation during long-term evaporation while maintaining a rapid evaporation rate,even in high-salinity brine.The salt diffusion process is segmented into three steps—insulation,branching diffusion,and arterial transport—that significantly enhance the salt-resistance properties of the evaporator.Moreover,the HSR strategy overcomes the tradeoff between salt resistance and evaporation rate.Consequently,a high evaporation rate of 2.84 kg m^(-2) h^(-1),stable evaporation for 7 days cyclic tests in 20 wt%NaCl solution,and continuous operation for 170 h in natural seawater under 1 sun illumination were achieved.Compared with control evaporators,the HSR evaporator exhibited a>54%enhancement in total water evaporation mass during 24 h continuous evaporation in 20 wt%salt water.Furthermore,a water collection device equipped with the HSR evaporator realized a high water purification rate(1.1 kg m^(-2) h^(-1)),highlighting its potential for agricultural applications.

Intraocular pressure elevation can induce retinal ganglion cell death and is a clinically reversible risk factor for glaucoma,the leading cause of irreversible blindness.We previously demonstrated that casein kinase-2 inhibition can promote retinal ganglion cell survival and axonal regeneration in rats after optic nerve injury.To investigate the underlying mechanism,in the current study we increased the intraocular pressure of adult rats to 75 mmHg for 2 hours and then administered a casein kinase-2 inhibitor(4,5,6,7-tetrabromo-2-azabenzimidazole or 2-dimethylamino-4,5,6,7-tetrabromo-1H-benzimidazole)by intravitreal injection.We found that intravitreal injection of 4,5,6,7-tetrabromo-2-azabenzimidazole or 2-dimethylamino-4,5,6,7-tetrabromo-1H-benzimidazole promoted retinal ganglion cell survival and reduced the number of infiltrating macrophages.Transcriptomic analysis showed that the mitogen activated protein kinase signaling pathway was involved in the response to intraocular pressure elevation but was not modulated by the casein kinase-2 inhibitors.Furthermore,casein kinase-2 inhibition downregulated the expression of genes(Cck,Htrsa,Nef1,Htrlb,Prph,Chat,Slc18a3,Slc5a7,Scn1b,Crybb2,Tsga10ip,and Vstm21)involved in intraocular pressure elevation.Our data indicate that inhibition of casein kinase-2 can enhance retinal ganglion cell survival in rats after acute intraocular pressure elevation via macrophage inactivation.

Emodin and shikonin(quinones): an overview of their chemistry, plant sources, pharmacology and cytotoxic activities against lung cancer

Emodin and shikonin are quinones that are commonly found in the roots of plant species of the families Polygonaceae and Boraginceae,respectively.They have a wide spectrum of bioactivities,including anti-cancer properties.This overview on the cytotoxic properties of emodin and shikonin is focused on lung cancer,the leading cause of cancer death in the world.In emodin,the-OH groups at C1 and C3 positions,while in shikonin,the-OH groups of the naphthazarin moiety and chiral side-chain,are important for their anti-tumour functions.Studies have shown that emodin and shikonin inhibit the growth of lung cancer cells by inducing apoptosis,autophagy,necrosis and early senescence,and by inhibiting proliferation,invasion,migration and metastasis.The cytotoxic activities are involved multiple molecular targets and signalling pathways.A clinical trial using shikonin to treat patients with late-stage lung cancer has been presented.Some future perspectives and research needs are suggested.Sources of information are from Google Scholar,Pub Med,Science Direct,J-Stage,Pub Chem and CNKI.
